I hit LVL 20 for all weapons this AM and went to Top Notch to log out before server reboot.

This afternoon, I updated Windows (Update Tuesday, and all that it entails) as I check for Windows updates at least once a day.

The game pops the Log-in screen, the Update screen and gets to the 'Play' button.

Press Play, the cursor spins a few tiks and .... nothing.

Rebooted the PC. This is like the 4th time the unit has been rebooted this year.

<All the preliminary stuff>... Press Play, the cursor spins a few tiks and .... nothing.

Deleted the game, reinstalled, nothing.

Anything I missed? Anyone notice issues like this before? I notice no one else commenting, so I kind of assume it's not a widespread issue with the MS updates.

Thanks for discussion.

had that problem a couple of months ago.

sledge had a sticky at the top of the general forum for a long time about this.

check out this thread, maybe it will help you resolve your problem.

I'm having the same issue also, win7/64 and i did a win update too.

Have you tried using system restore to go back to before installing the update ?

I can't try that because for some reason the update didn't create a restore point for me and the ones i have are a bit too far back.

I got it to work by uninstalling the security updates for windows, prolly a bad idea but it works now.

yep that did it for me too, ty

Still they have to check what the conflict is with the security updates because we will have to install these updates eventually.

Soon as I hit play defiance.exe and crashhandler.exe runs at the same time. Microsoft's update must have a compatibility issue with the game's executable.

Just a heads up. As I posted in http://forums.defiance.com/showthread.php?121791-Game-does-not-start, it seems to be security update KB2859537 specifically that is causing the issue.
It's obviously not recommended to avoid installing or remove any windows update, but with that said if you are wanting to play Defiance, now you know which one is the culprit.

Thanks, Fuzzle.
I was trying to puzzle it out when a 3 minute storm in my AO temporarily blew out my XFinity, speed dropped to 0.08 Mbps. At that point I just system restored to yesterday. You saved me the work of starting over. I appreciate the help.

I had the problem before the update. Went to Steam, and verified file integrity, and 65 files failed to validate. I'm stuck at a ten gig download now.

I am not seeing this update. There were updates last night, but mine is in the KB284xxxx range. All .net updates. Yet I am still having the same issues. Anyone else with the same problem?

Scroll further down. By default the view of the list of updates is grouped by software so last nights date will come back when you reach the group Microsoft Windows. You could group it by installation date instead for easier navigation.

The Microsoft security update addresses a specific problem that requires a LOCAL LOGON. That is, unless your grandma or baby sis is crafting specifically designed code to hack your laptop, it is a security fix that could be postponed until DEFIANCE is patched. I was lucky enough to read the posted complaints before allowing Microsoft Update to complete. Simply, I unticked the Microsoft KB2859537 update and will wait. There is no danger from over-the-net attacks addressed by KB2859537. -GJ

How exactly is this Microsoft's fault? they patched a security risk, like they should, from what i see this update doesn't mess with any other program or game that i have installed, so it seems obvious that it's a problem with the patcher code and not with the update.
Doesn't matter if the risk of not installing this update is minimal or not, this has to be corrected asap.

as of today August / 14th / 2013 I have the same issue, my OP is Windows 7/64 bit, and the game does not work after you hit ( play), I just got Windows.NET updated automatically by Windows and I'm facing same issue, I do not know if its because the Windows.net update or from the game client, just to let you know that uninstall/reinstall did not work, while I can play most of the rest of big MMO's like ( RIFT, WoW, Tera, GW2, .... normally.

Um, because they made the code error in the way they allow programs to access memory.
and it is a "no real danger to the common masses" vulnerability at that, so...

I read this post and did a test on my Win7/64 PC. I logged into Definable and it loaded with no issue.
Went into game perfect.

Then I ran Windows update 8/13 /13 rebooted and now it will not load game. I can login then Click Play and Nothing.

I think Windows programmers have once again screwed up.

yea and they patched it, now only defiance's patcher (edit: and apparently Rift, although Rift seems to work fine for me) has a problem with that update, so... why is that?

The fix is to go to Control panel/ Programs and features then click on View Installed updates and look for KB2859537 and uninstall. This will reboot your PC.

Then Defiance will load as it should. :)

Thanks guys for sharing the info. Ark Hunters Support works:cool:

it is not only Trion's. Those are simply the only ones you noticed.
And it isn't every install of W64 bit and Trion's games.
Nor even every one of Trion's games and every install.
Seems to have a bit more undeclared specificity to it.

Does not appear to effect steam start as far as I can tell.

PS, odds are as games are not really a concern in an affected environment no one on the MSDN tested it.

Microsoft botched the patch release on Tuesday, they're causing all sorts of problems. This one is definitely on MS.

If you want more info on it click the link I provided (last link), directly from microsoft. I doubt if it were that simple they would have had a work around for the programs it affects. This article was posted as soon as the patch was released so they knew it had issues beforehand. It is even effecting some native windows programs, even BSOD's for some users at bootup. And seeing this issue has a more prominent effect on x64 based systems this is not pure API error from 3rd party application development. Otherwise this issue would be a problem on and across both x86 and x64 plats and it's not just Win 7 or 8; XP users have also started to report the miscellaneous problems specifically with KB 2859537 (I've verified this on one of my old XP machines )and XP does not have the more advanced secure & priviledged states that Win 7 & 8 have.
