View Full Version : a simple question about a "longer, more fulfilling"......

I have a simple question, well - the one that I am posing in THIS thread, anyway.
It won't take long to ask but I want everyone to savor the anticipation leading up to it.
Sure, everyone could answer with a simple one word answer or a few sentences or a paragraphs or even a nice "War and Peace"-style reply.
Whatever suits You, folks. Say what You need to say but say it.

There was a comment made about parts of Our beloved Game here ; Defiance, and them being a "Longer, more fulfilling Chase".
I have heard it called a "longer, more fulfilling fisting", "longer, more fulfilling screwover" and even a "longer, more fulfilling @*!king" but all of these lead me to ask the simple question of why We embark on that chase anyway?

So.....
Arkhunters, upon the eve of the biggest change in Defiance history:
What do You expect from Defiance? I mean, why do You even continue to do this ?
Do You want something out of it? Why?

I entered the game at the beginning playing by myself until sometime in June. I met some cool people since then and have been playing with them ever since. "Longer fulfilling fist**** of fury" I don't even care.
Why?
They (Trion) just don't get it. I don't know how else to say it...
Why do I stay?
Friends. The friends that I have made playing this game make it worthwhile. There is a web of people that I like dealing/interacting with, but there is an even smaller group of people that I enjoy trailblazing the hillsides of Defiance with. That is MY fulfilling chase.

Good answer above. Kinda the same reason for myself, as I'm sure other Dawn Patrollers will echo. I play for the social aspect, and have fun doing so. But I will say this. I have bought all dlc and will purchase dlc 5, but I REFUSE to spend any money on arkforge to level my weapons. If my weapons become obsolete and my 4400 ego character follows suit, then I guess me and Crixda will just go smash zombie heads in Dead Island, or something else. If Trion "breaks" the game then **** em, its their own fault! Only time will tell.

Here's to season 2: map expansion and REAL STORY CONTENT.
That's all I'm holding on for.

Yes, exactly. Defiance is my first MMO (other than some stupid game I used to play on my iPhone). So I too have met some cool, fun, interesting people and that is what keeps me there.
Additionally, in general, I like the idea of Defiance and most of the game play as it is now. I also enjoy the thrill of pulling a new OJ out of the lockbox or getting it as a drop from an arkfall or something...until I figure out it has no nano and some tragic roll of course. To me, getting an OJ on my own is much more fun than trading for it or buying it from another player.

What do You expect from Defiance? I mean, why do You even continue to do this ?
Do You want something out of it? Why?

The short answer is I don't continue to do this.

The long one....
I stopped playing when the grenade change went live. When I learned I could copy my main over to the PC Test Server, I did that and played again for the first time in months. The re-adaptation of grenades in charges fixes alot of the "I can't pick up the blue drop because there are 14 grenades, 8 stims, and 4 spikes piled on top of it." Scaled up enemies are more challenging. Thats another bonus. Incursions are still AoE fests and less than fun. There are still no rewards for PvP comparable to PvE rewards. The scrip sink designed into the salvage to keys vendor is ruthless. The punishment vs benefits of being high ego is still lopsided. 2/3 of the EGO powers remain of questionable utility. So, if I wanted something out of Defiance, I guess <sarcasm> defying Defiance's attempt to defy my enjoyment of Defiance.

I will say that I had forgotten how cathartic it was to cloak, find a rock above any of the raider mines, and bolt action through a few head shots after a long day of work.

I truly don't 'expect' anything from Defiance as a game. I play the game as a distraction from real life, an escape from reality. I've met good people, and fun friends here, I've even managed to drag some of my RL friends into the game. But truly I'm looking forward to the game to continue to be an entertaining romp through a interesting alternate future and am really just enjoying each of the changes Trion brings to this world. Perhaps this is why I have the more relaxed attitude about how Trion is handling things, and talk about being patient in posts. (cue the fan boy accusations. LOL) The game has lots of potential for growth, and becoming even more entertaining in the future, I'm just not going to impose my imagination on it. That's Trion's job, mine is to keep playing and enjoying what they give us.

Defiance is my first online game, I have been playing Dragon Age, Skyrim, Mass Effect and other games to before, but always alone.
When I joined the community, my friends list was empty. :o
Since then I have met so many nice people, :) learned new English words they don't teach you in Hungarian schools......most of them look like this: ****** :D
Love my clan, my new online friends and love this game because of these people.
I can't play as much as I want because of real life, but will stay with these people in other coming games to....hope Defiance will be playable for a long time. :o

CRIX, I like your posts, when I see your name on it, I know it's will be an interesting topic. :o

That one great unicorn weapon.

I have pulled perfect versions of crappy guns. They couldn't be better, but I want to pull the perfect version of a good gun. I have pulled hundreds of legendary items, but never that item that everyone would kill to have. ( I have probably scrapped 100 to 150 horrible guns. Yes, I recycle.)

Doesn't seem likely now.

There is no chase for me. Defiance is a video game, like Battlefield or COD might be... in that light, I mean that to me, Defiance is a game that has no "end-game." Every day I log in there is no set goal. I go here, I kill this, I find that. There is no end.

When I feel like shooting something, I jump on Defiance. When I feel like having a real goal or objective, I jump on another game... which is probably why I don't play Defiance a whole lot.

The real reason I started playing was because it was a good co-op game I could play with my girlfriend and we watched the show, so the two worlds collided to make the "idea" more fun.

We slowed our playing drastically because there were no new game "modes" or even "levels/maps" to explore. The difficulty is trivial. We both like a challenge and with even 5 other players at the same location, there is no challenge, no difficulty, and usually, no enemies to shoot.

I've no interest in getting to 5K EGO. I've no intrest in finding that "perfect gun." As another person pointed out, I like getting my own OJs and if they suck, okay, that's what I expect. If they are good though, I chalk it up to a good day, nothing less, nothing more.

I play Shadow Wars because it is a neat concept and you will see more variation in how people play the game. It's fun to battle it out in the "real world" and be in the middle of a capture or shoot out when the timer expires and the SW is over... only to be standing next to your "enemy" who is now your "buddy" on a quest to kill the Volge beside you, or whatever. It's neat.

So I guess, you could say, that I play(ed) Defiance for a co-op setting in a world I could watch on TV while not needing an objective to remember, day to day (like Skyrim or such).

I stopped/slowed playing Defiance because I could do it in my sleep. 98% of all weapons were immidiate garbage. People ran through co-ops and events like it didn't matter if they died a million times.

I'm looking forward to Patch 5 as it will introduce a much more difficult world. It also makes even green weapons viable. Every other game that I play, you get better weapons consistantly as you progress through the game. I'm glad to see that happen here.

All in all, while Defiance may lose an amount of players, I'm sure there are more out there that will pick it (back) up due to the changes.

Thanks for replying, everyone. Thank You Battle5star, for the kind words and here is another good "english" word for Your lexicon: @!*+!&!!#!.
It is kind of like ****.
Defiance is a fun catharsis for me and I feel strange if I don't play it each and every day. I hate to even turn on my Xbox if I don't get on Defiance and I and doubly bummed if there aren't any Dawn Patrol members on.
Truly, Defiance IS all about my friends.
It is kind of funny to me when my lovely wife asks me about clan members and how they are doing.
I hit the door when I get home and on goes the 'box, see who is on, get into an xbox party and into Paradise I go.
Sure, I get animated over changes to Defiance but as long as I have Dawn Patrol everything WILL be okay.

I enjoy the game. It's flawed, but I still have faith that Trion is at least trying to iron out the bumps. That's why I play.

As for "longer, more fulfilling chase", I don't have an issue with it. Legendary weapons shouldn't be dropping like candy (though, on the reverse, they shouldn't have a 95% chance of being crap, either). The chase for that Holy Grail item is a compelling reason to keep playing, though I do take issue with the fact that the system that is about to be initiated punishes you more the earlier it drops.

The thought of no longer playing the game has crossed my mind a number of times in the past few months. Unlike many players thinking the same, my reasons have nothing to do with my personal enjoyment of the game. Notwithstanding that I like the concept of it not being structured around level gated content and that this is going to change in less than 48 hours, there are still elements remaining that I can continue to enjoy. I'm in a different position than some players in that I had not been very lucky until the past month or so with regards to getting exceptional weapons so most of my gear is within a few hundred points of my EGO rating or less.

My issue with the game is with the business model that they've set up, and the lack of artistic integrity of the development team and the transparent disregard for the majority of the player base that comes with it. To be fair they're not unique in this regard, as the overwhelming majority of F2P games have adopted this practice of basing their revenue stream around the minority of players that are willing to spend deep on microtransactions for their enjoyment of the game but they've gone to unprecedented extremes in this regard with the way they've set their pricing structure.

As Scapes explained it through his disclosure about how they priced the Legendary kits, it is a largely cold and clinical analysis of numbers that completely ignores the backlash impact it has on the majority of the players of this game, while focusing almost solely on feedback in the form of consumer activity from those few players that have spent and continue to spend relatively large sums of cash in Bit Store transactions. The industry disgustingly refers to these consumers as "whales", a term that Trion Worlds CEO Scott Hartsman admitted years ago is openly used inside the walls of the game developers that adopt this kind of business model and comes from the casino industry. If you take the time to think about how little the casino industry cares about the regular players inside its walls that speaks volumes with regards to how game developers who adopt this business model regard regular players of their games. In Hartsman's own words, it's a "fairly large net negative" experience for the player community.

There comes a point in time where each of us really should stop and think about how this kind of business philosophy and those that practice it have truly dragged the F2P/B2P game industry into the ground. There comes a point in time where each of us should realize that, notwithstanding that we may still actually enjoy playing the game despite the deliberate actions of the game developers to completely f**k up the game mechanics and completely f**k up pacing to make the business model work in the short term, that we are enabling this kind of thing to continue to happen in game development, and we are guilty of collaboration in making it worse by continuing to support a game with outrageous and completely unprecedented pricing practices in the annals of MMO gaming history with the sale of Legendary kits, Arkforge bundles and their ilk.

Our individual voices are tiny. Our collective voices can speak largely. Although I continue to play this game, I am looking for other game developers that are more deserving of my support, of our support.

Dead Island, now there is a game I haven't played in a while.

To CRIX's topic, I Started playing because the concept was interesting, and some of my friends had it preordered. I continued to play when they left in the first month, because I enjoyed the casual way I could jump in and shoot things, without being required to do anything. I could run to an arkfall, do the main story, do a minor, and do a roadside emergency all for the fun of it. Every patch since then has undeminded that FUN aspect of the game. Tomorrow marks the end of playing for fun, an becomes play to meet goals.

Tomorrow marks the end of playing for fun, an becomes play to meet goals.

I respectfully disagree (of course these are opinions from two people). As it stands right now, there is no *fun* for me in the game. It's extremely easy (as far as most TPS games go) and the only reason I would log in was to do the contracts and try and get keys for a lockbox. That right there is no fun for me with meeting goals being the only reason I would play.

With the patch tomorrow, I won't care about the gun chase or the contracts (as much, anyways) as there will be a real want to do the content. Things will be harder. Completing a co-op or arena on a sort of "hard" mode will bring about satisfaction. Since I will level up and that's a big part of the game tomorrow onward, then green guns I find scattered around the battlefield will become more usefull. The need to get keys to find that "perfect" gun will be much smaller as that "perfect" gun would just become obsolete in a few hundred EGO levels anyway (you get what I am saying).

So for me, tomorrow marks the time when I can actually log in and have fun with goals not being in the forefront of my mind. I can't wait to hit the Sieges, Arks, Arenas, and Co-Ops!

I can't ever expect anything from binaries - claiming there is reason to play cannot be valid - how disillusioned is that, ROFL!

I play. Not why, or how - the statement is by itself, outside of the question or the demand of it- I play.

Without reason, without hypocritical claims. I play.

My wife and I enjoyed the show. She gave me the game as a gift. All I knew about the game, was the mention of it on the show Face Off. I popped it in the PS3 and quickly realized that this game was nothing like any other that I had played. I had no idea how to play an MMO!

I remember the first few days, while doing the missions, and seeing other "ppl" running around doing the same things I was. I remember doing the hospital mission, and getting credit for completing objectives when I hadn't. But, I did "help", because I was one of the ones killing the bad guys while others were hitting the circles. I thought, "this is cool. ppl working together for a common goal."

I played for almost 2 months as a lone wolf. I thought I was doing pretty good in the game. I generally ranked in the top 5 of the leader boards for arkfalls. I had, what I thought at the time was a decent amount of scrip, 30k. I didn't talk to ppl, hell, I never looked at the chat window. I played the game and enjoyed it. When sieges were re-introduced, I fell in love with this aspect of the game. Quickly learning the proper tactics to move me into the top 5 of the leaderboards. The first time I made number 1 was a huge milestone for me!

The game got extremely interesting for me with the Jack Leg Joe mission. I can't tell you how many times I attempted it! Finally, I turned to the web for help and found this forum. Seeing all the threads about this mission and following the simple advice from it helped me finally defeat that mission. It also introduced me to y'all! I lurked. I studied. I read almost every thread in the archives of the PS3 general forum. I looked into the trade forum, and realized my 30k was shyte! Good weapons were going for 300k-1m!

The first major change I encountered was the nerf of my beloved SAW! I was away from the game for a week, due to business. When I logged back on, my SAW had been neutered! I was devastated! I loved this purple frontier beast I had scrimped and saved to purchase from the vendor! I knew I had to do something!

I turned to the clan forum. Was invited to join and started meeting all these ppl I had seen running around on my mini map. These ppl are why I continue to log in each night. My clan mates and friends and allies that I met, traded with, played the game with.

I don't know what the "Bullet-Sponge DLP" will do to affect my play style. I do know though, that if I do decide to leave Defiance, I have met some great ppl and that we will continue this "online" friendship through other games or PSN.

In closing. When I first joined the forum, I was one of Trions "White Knights" defending The Company for the bad *** game they had created. I learned to deal with the bugs, glitching, discos, and hard freezes. I learned to deal with questions remaining unanswered, no matter how many times asked. I earned to deal with game changing decisions, grenades. I've accepted a game company that doesn't give a s**t about it's long time player base and would rather say f**k you rather than anything at all. I've accepted being lied to, mislead, and for periods of time completely ignored by The Company and its minions. With each passing DLP and shady decision by The Company, my resolve to defend them has lead me to my current state; "Love the game, Deplore the development of it".

Will these new changes break this game for me? In the immortal words of the head minion, Mr. *******, "I'm looking into it and will let you know......................................Soon."

To each his own.

I just feel like this game is no longer going to be the same game a majority of players have grown accustomed to. It may even cause NA 360 to become sparcely populated (unlikely, but still). I suppose we'll have to wait and see. I'll stick around a bit longer to get my moneys worth out of it, but based on what I played in the PTS, it won't be as fun.

This has honestly become an excellent thread with some good stories about the personalities of You Arkhunters and also excellent points like the ones that Deunan was making.
I am no "whale" and I would like to smash someone in the face for even treating us like that - if Trion is a small company and they are running around out here like some big-ballers thinking that We are some stupid marks then they are horribly wrong. You tried with the Legendary Kit and We put the stop to that crap, do You want to feel our wrath again, Scotty-boy?

3 reasons I continue to play defiance. 1) its a loot based game with out modders or modded weapons to ruin it. 2) I like the show and the story. 3) I have false hope that another company will take over defiance and unlock the true potential this game has to offer.

I heard that the reason they pulled the orange box from the store was because it gave an orange weapon to each character the player had instead of just one, and the devs didn't have the ability to change it (or changing it would be time intensive).

It'd be interesting to get a confirmation on that.

I'm not sure how I feel about the game now. On one hand, I like the idea that my 5000 Ego toon now will have some advantages. Until now, Defiance has been the game that punishes you for leveling up, not the other way around. So it's nice to see that dynamic change.

On the other hand, Trion seems to have a poor idea of this so-called "chase" especially when it comes to DLC content. Too much chasing and no rewards just leads to frustration and resentment, and that's about where I am right now. A few months of grinding and grinding both for 7th Legion and Gunslinger items and I still have not pulled one orange weapon from either one. And yes, it's all about the oranges now. Plus I haven't pulled one orange item from a T4 lockbox since the last DLC changed everything. So you might say I'm getting a bit tired of the chase for nothing.

It's going to be interesting, this new "hard mode". I was playing this weekend thinking about the changes, and noticed a lot of low ego players around. I went to one conflict site in particular, and there were two people already starting it but looked like they were having trouble. I also saw that they were both under 500 ego. I helped complete it, and everyone seemed happy. But after the patch, what happens when I show up to a similar situation? Are the lower ego players going to get angry that I ramped up the enemies on them? Sure seems like that would be the case. So much for promoting teamwork.

True - however, as if it wasn't ALREADY down the drain on your new non-nano weapon that didn't even come with mods that match it's synergy! I just would rather have such an awesome dinner for $80. So glad that monstrosity is out of the store. Can't wait to mention to my clan in game tonight.

Yes but the weapon kit in question is the legendary one that cost 8000 bits. They said it was making plenty of money, then pulled it without saying why. We all know it is because you are a fool to pay 80$ for that crap, but would still like to hear it.

Those mods never matched the synergy in the 80$ box. {Edited because I re-read your post and you already covered what I mentioned in red, but I will leave it so others who missed it, see it.}You were quaranteed 4 mods for that gun type wich means if you got a canoneer syn AR, then you would get 4 ar mods but they may have different synergies. Scapes and people who bought them have already confirmed that. Btw depending on your ego level some of those guns also came with only one mod slot unlocked, like any weapon drop.

If I rang up an $80 bill for dinner, it would be probably be for something like sushi for me and my wife, and we would be in the world's worst food coma shortly thereafter.

... But it would be glorious! :)

in all honesty I feel that gunslinger GST was a step in the right direction. and I feel the same about this arktech revolution. BUT I have severe reservation about SOME of the mechanics and their implementation. I read over the patch notes and overall I was pleased. my biggest concern is the enemy and player buff, debuff, and threat level scaling. I forsee Super King Kamehameha issues here. secondly ablative armor good ideal bad ideal for it to be from stims and spikes. it would have been better to tie it into the outfits so that our appearance changes with how much armor we have like our enemies now do. (just saiyin'). that's about it. well the big stuff anyways. there were other thigns that I considered important but these are the two that I was hung up on anyways. must say though. after GST and this update I actually have an iota of hope for this game again. kinda looking forward to season 2 patches..... kinda.

I agree our appearance should reflect the armor's. What I am concerned with in regards to "paid update" #5 is when it rolls out tomorrow.... what will actually get broken due to this dropping!?

As with all the patches, the game servers are going to break. Probably be down for half the day ;)

I play for the achievements. When it's all said and done, this will probably be one of the hardest games to get all achievements for.

What do You expect from Defiance? I mean, why do You even continue to do this ?
Do You want something out of it? Why?

MMO sci-fi shooter. Defiance has always (IMO) done that bit well. It accompanying a tv series has the potential to be interesting.

Unfortunately what has kept me from playing Defiance are all the other sadly non-optional bits. Solo car races, arenas, dinky, unrealistic arcade style boss fights.

Pretty much every sci-fi boss fight ever. Seriously. Even Halo.
