Defiance has a very high standard to work towards. Especially with a 3rd person mmo shooter

There are quite a few core elements I want to see that will bring my engineer back to life. Not just a few basic elements with flashy graphics.

Will be watching closely to see how it develops.

I played it briefly and had alot of fun with it, but had serious problems with the game lagging really bad. Something wasn't compatible with my video card of the time and that game. Never was able to figure out why it was doing that and gave up.

mdagli1

I was running off a Geforce 6800 at the time and had the same lag issue with low FPS.
Hence why my profile picture is a bit rubbish... (It was from the last moments when it got shut down)
Set to high, looked very nice with differed lighting. But ultimately what sold it for me was the gameplay was very interesting and was something I could cope with.

Of course, since then I've done a massive system upgrade (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v612/mdagli1/Computer/DSCN6147.jpg)and runs perfectly fine. Of course can only test this on the privet server (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v612/mdagli1/Tabula%20Rasa/00000001-1.jpg)but I won't digress onto that now.

Add what ever you want onto it.

Much better than the discharge that NCsoft forced down our throats...

did i miss anything?

That's a bit of an understatement:
PvE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYDxK5YScbc&t=0m45s
PvP http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOg6L0A_nIY

Google the rest, way too much to list in this thread.

I played it everyday for a whole month and managed to complete 80% of the game solo when I was job seeker. Suffice to say, it was the peek of my long history of gaming.
There were also a lot of other personal stories on the planetTR forums but all that history has been lost as they decided to close that too.
Such a tragic loss of a community in my books.

Yes, I am.
Tabula Rasa was(still is) the best MMO FPS game I ever played.

@ DougFlorence
It was a Massively Multiplayer Online, First Person Shooter, Player Versus Environment, Role-Playing Game. (MMO-FPS-PVE-RPG). -Imagine a co-op game like HALO or Resistance 2, only Massively Multiplayer in a Persistent Online World.

And that wasn't even the best part about it:
There were intermittent monster invasions in the cities/towns, and that was the fun part.

HellGate and Ace Online comes close but not as much fun -No monster invasions to co-op against

The PVP, especially the clan wars, was actually a blast, too bad only a few people actually partook in it. I'd still be playing if it was still around.

Plenty of unreleased content hidden deep in the TR files.

I hosted a weekly Edmund Range event on the Centaurus (EU) server when they announced the closure. I lost most of the screen shots to planetTR but still have a video of all of us together.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFCYiIMp4kY
(I'm the guy in the bright blue armour. Upgraded to some max crafted white version of that armour later.)

We fought the hell out of the PAU's in PvP on Edmund Range and PvE on Earth. May favourite will always be the classic AFS mech:

The only thing I regret is missing the SvS war on the public test server. (server vs server)

When Dev's dispensed rewards to players, there were massive long ques of people... Never witnessed anything like that in an MMO as that's rather a British thing to do...

If you played on Cassie I'm sure you remember the 47th A.F.S.E.F.. We're the 47th Legion now but I've been keeping a very close eye on this game and it just looks better and better every time some new info or media is released.

Can't wait for this one and to finally play a MMO that has some bearable gameplay.

TR beta tester here. I wanted to get into the game after launch, but was busy with other things at the time. By the time I got things freed up enough to take an interest, it was shutting down. A shame the game had so much potential. II hope that Defiance can be at least as good about the basics as TR was. I'm very curious to see how things progress.

They screwed General British. Lets face it, the game had to flunk so NCsoft could extract all the code for their next games.
Its the only game that was completely banned not even een P.server. A week before the expansion pack it was closed down.

Anywho I'm really looking forward to Defiance.

yeah TR got screwed hard no doubt.

I see so much of the style of TR in this game, as does everyone i know that played that game it's crazy. I wonder if they looked at that game for some inspiration. I really hope this game does well.

My biggest concern atm is how the lag is going to impact the reaction time of the targeting when you start getting lots of people on the servers. I wonder if the dev's are going to end up using sticky targeting as well like TR did.

The best way to solve this problem would be like Firefall is doing.

They force everyone to play on 250 ping/ms. I know allot of people will argue that 250 ms seems like allot but its hardly noticeable its just something high performance gamers like to brag about ( that and FPS ).

My biggest concern is the community. FPS'rs and RPG'rs don't mix well.
Ever been on a board like Firefall/Global Agenda/Terra ? Its terrible so is the overall ingame community. To much ego and testosterone.

That and lets face it Syfy. Syfy has no mercy in shutting stuff down that they seems isn't worth while anymore. Not giving a [Edit] about their fans.

TR Vet here, only did the first month, was distracted with too many other things by then....really loved the play though....remember going some route with some sword thing and was heck of a lot of fun.

Really looking forward to see if Trion can pull off a 3rd person shooter mmo that the mmo community so desperately needs. Huxley never panned out like they hyped it for years...so...ya...bout time someone did it right.

Hopefully the game can survive without the show though, very few shows overall make it past a couple of years so they've probably taken that into consideration.

Hopefully the game can survive without the show though, very few shows overall make it past a couple of years so they've probably taken that into consideration.

That's quite a bit of an undertaking legally there. Sharing IP requires lots of manoeuvring to ensure cooperation don't step onto each others toes. The last thing they want is a relationship going south and having to fork over vast amounts of money to resolve a dispute which would probably destroy the survival of the game.

Historically, IP has been generated by show publishers making those that hold the licence gets to choose what happens to the game. (The Matrix and Stargate comes to mind.) In this case, it's the other way round. Unless syfy are directly funding the project, Trion gets to choose who gets to host/produce the show.
http://www.trionworlds.com/en/legal/legal-notices

I have a feeling that End of Nations is just a stepping stone for Trion to gain the necessary public leverage to maintain their IP and any future projects that they choose to pursue.

RG, I hope you're reading this, don't be an employee to your own IP!
Games may come and go but relationships are forever baby!

I beta tested it, but never went beyond that. It was a good game, too, I just got caught up in others. Sad to hear it closed its doors. One of my other games just did died out, wondering if WoW is going to follow suit (I don't even touch that account). Such is the state of the MMO world...I wonder if they include a possible death date in their business plans?

You know, I've spent a lot of time trying to think of a good response to this but there is only 1 answer I can think of:

Everything with a beginning has an end.

The meaning of "Tabula Rasa" is to be born as a blank slate and you can't be born without the death of something else, otherwise you end up with eternal inflation.

In conclusion, in the event of the closure of anything that you pour your life into, celebrate it. The gamers, the devs, the sceptics and even the trolls.

Still brings a tear to my eye. Without emotion, we would not be human.

Hey guys,

you might remember me from the Centaurus server as well as helping out the community on the quasi-official forums with the color matching tool, the printable logos and their positions sheet and some other stuff. It's really nice to see some of the folks again who I enjoyed one of the best MMOs to date with.

Can't really put a finger on what compelled me to keep Defiance on my radar. Is it the screenshots? Or the setting? I do keep wondering how similar Defiance is going to be to the game we all loved so much such a long while ago. What do you think?

Same here. It's still installed on this machine, in fact.

Can't play it any more, but can't bring myself to delete it. I hope Trion takes a long hard look at what TR did right, and brings that here.

To be honest, the biggest fault with TR was that NCSoft was involved. We won't have that particular problem here, fortunately.

For the first time I'm very excited to pay for the ultimate edition for a game. I played Tabula Rasa when it came out.. but i played runescape mostly at that time and never played a MMO as unique as this. I've played all of them. The music in that game still echos in my dreams.. the only thing that concerns me is will it die early? it seems the games with the best story's die young..

When I get home, I will root through my archives as I am pretty sure I saved the file. I think I did anyway. I will also look into what font that is as (even though I can identify thousands because of my job) it is unusual, and I do not know it. It might be completely custom or a heavily modified font. Valethar (and anyone else who needs / wants it), PM me an email addy so I can email you the original jpg file for the TR discharge certificate. I cannot attach it here as it shrinks the image a lot. It is just a flat jpg (about 800 or so Kb), but high res. I still don't know what the font is though sadly. I will try and figure it out if it is even a font.

Also, great pic Draxx. Inspired me to post mine of my sniper (main) on Orion (Alyxei Vaeyn) with Arieki in the background. :D Also one of my wife and I (on my Medic). Also one of some of the members of Squad 288.

Here are some of mine. I used to have a lot more, but lost some stuff in an HD crash. Apparently I didn't think I needed to back up my screens/movies at the time :o

The next to last one was an invasion event being run by the GM's. You can see GM_Vagabond in the image, and some of us teasing Critters (One of the Dev team) in the chat box. GM_Kasumi was rolling around there somewhere, but I didn't manage to get him in the shot. I also think April (aka Cuppajo) made an appearance in this one, but can't recall for sure. I played Tabula Rasa during the beta, but never got into the release. In retrospect, I might have enjoyed it if I had accepted it for what it was at the time, but I saw potential in it and was pretty unimpressed when I saw how it was squandered. The big thing for me was the LOGOS system which was supposed to be this big great thing and it was supposed to make people go out and explore the world and I thought, hey, maybe a game that will have some exploration and some variety based off that as the community gets together to help find these LOGOS. Instead what I found was an old NPC parroting off a quest telling you exactly where to go to collect your next logos ability. No exploration, just "hey, there's a logos out there, go fetch." Between that, and the exceptionally crappy net code at the time, I ultimately looked away and got involved with other games, and never really looked back. In retrospect I almost wish I could have experienced it as it was one of the last few interesting games from Richard Garriot, considering now that he's gone a bit daft and things casual friendly mobile social games are the future, we're not likely to see much of merit from him anymore.

In truth though, a lot of the "fond memories" I hear about Tablua Rasa are never about when the game was normally active, but rather when they had nothing to lose and took the gloves off and started doing these huge events and content drops before it closed. Sad thing is that, had they done that earlier, it had enough people interested that they might have kept it going.

TR Vet here.. I cloned myself so many damn times, I lost track for who was what...

I know I ended it out, sitting on high.. with Torque Rifle in hand.. snuffing out life after life like the hand of an angry god.

TR was the ONLY game I ever bought a Collector's edition for.. (You could say it was a very harsh lesson.)

Until Defiance.

I'm really hoping this game does what TR couldn't.. don't let my Collector's edition ruin your game!!!

Also, Trion, if you reading this.. PLEASE give me my rocket propelled-explosive-drill bit launching Torque Rifle XD

Just a friendly reminder for TR vets that if you're looking to hook up with other TR vets, and a guild that formed specifically for TR, the 47th Legion (formerly the 47th A.F.S.E.F. of Cassieopeia) is open for business in Defiance.

You can check out our recruiting thread here (http://forums.defiance.com/showthread.php?332-47th-Legion-(West-Coast-PvP-PvE-RP-Lite)) or click my signature to be brought directly to our website.

We'd love to pick up some fellow TR vets for Defiance ;)

I played Tabula Rasa from early beta until the day it closed... It remains one of my favorite MMOG experiences ever, from someone who has played MMOGs since 1997. I have a ton of screenshots saved in my MMORPG.com member gallery. You can see them here: http://www.mmorpg.com/galleries/Darkholme ... I'm in the process of moving them into their own folder so if they disappear that's where they are... I don't have my honorable discharge, but I do have all the game soundtracks that were still available on the ftp of the server (And those who have played the game know that the FTP was maintained years after the ptr.com was taken down, and no PTR doesn't stand for public test realm, its 'Play Tabula Rasa')\
Anyone else launches the client for time to time and tries that login screen?

I loved TR. I still have my Collectors Edition box proudly displayed on my shelf as if the game never died. :( Only game I truly miss.

I'm right there with you friend, still have my collectors box. I remember when I got my e-mail that General British was storing my name and account info on the Internation Space Station. My heart started racing but that email won't load it's images anymore but I can still read:

"Thank you for participating in Operation Immortality!
Through your dedicated effort to save humanity we have secured the
Shadowsong Tabula Rasa characters aboard the Immortality Drive,
which is now safely stored on the International Space Station.

Hmm... my best explanation is Gears of Wars and Rift combined. I throw a little BF3 in there for the Shadow Wars. I wish Tabula Rasa was still going, I'd be still playing it.

I loved Tabula Rasa! I have played it straight from the beginning, but it was in a dark time of low grade internet and the lags would just hurt the gameplay sooo bad..

I eventually gave up on it and searched for other mmos to play, but I have always searched for something similar that would be even a shred bit as fun as TR was..

And here I am today! finally another 3rdPS mmo! and a good one with high production at that! Thank god for Trion..

I would actually think firefall is closer to TR. Defiance is more like Rift as a 3rd person shooter.

I played if for a few months, liked the game, but it seemed empty of NPC interactions, if you know what I mean. then they messed around with it too much and nerfed things and everyone just stopped playing. Sad, it had a lot of potential. I was hoping it was going to be the new incarnation of Anarchy Online, my first MMPORPG.

It does seem to have the same problems with its non-intuitive weapon mod system. The current weapon mod system in this game reminds me of the first confusing attempts from TR

I understood the mod system in TR very well, both the old and new. I prefer the old system as there was actually risk of permanent loss involved when attempting upgrades at a certain point.

Here are some screens of both the old and new items I had created at some point.

OMG.. Some of those were just epic... LOL

Remember the ones at Foreas Base (http://tabularasa.wikia.com/wiki/Foreas_Base)? (If anyone remembers the old M.A.S.H. TV series, you'll like these.) You can still get a ZIP file over at IGN (http://tabularasavault.ign.com/View.php?view=other.Detail&id=11) that has all of them in MP3 format.

"Attention, all personnel. Good news: reinforcements have arrived, as the drunk tank has been flushed. That is all."

"Attention, all personnel. The wormhole is not to be used for trash removal. People on the other end are complaining. That is all."

"Attention, all personnel. Anyone noticing unusual chromosomal changes following wormhole travel should report to Dr. Honeydew for gender reassignment."

"Attention, all personnel. Due to conditions beyond our control, we regret to announce the lunch is now being served."

"Attention, all personnel. Tonight's movie is a holdover from last week and will be shown right after dinner, which is also a holdover from last week."

"Attention. New recruits please take note: the back forty is not a golf course; it is a mine field. If you have to work on your slice, please do it on the battlefield. That is all."

"There is no parking in the red zone; The white zone is for loading and unloading passengers only."

"Your attention please. Welcome to Foreas; this planet is a no-smoking environment as the atmosphere is flammable."

"The PX invites you to try Corman brand Coffite. Because something like coffee is better than no coffee at all."

"Your attention please. Once more, we must remind you that it is against our rules and their regulations to lick the anphinians."

"Attention. Please retrieve all wounded and applicable body parts from the battlefield. The limb you save may be your own."

"Attention. Those of you who have entered the wormhole counting on the space time continuum to delay your KP time will be disappointed to learn that due to Einstein's Theory of Relativity, you still have to peel potatoes."

"Attention, all personnel. Because of the epidemic, tonight's broken film, which has not arrived yet, is canceled. A reminder from Colonel Jamestead: due to the flu, kindly refrain from kissing anyone unless absolutely necessary."

"Attention All Personnel. Tonight's movie is 'War Drums Along the East River', a rollicking adventure following the final days of the gang war in post-apocalyptic Brooklyn. See actors trying to rap and rappers trying to act in what film critic David Manning called, "The worst movie of its, or any other kind, ever." Free popcorn will also be served."

"Attention All Personnel. No matter how many times you die, it is always disconcerting. Open counseling is now available with Doctor Williams for those who are suffering from Post-Death Nervousness Disorder. That is all."

"Attention, all personnel. Ah.. this is Captain Koontz, here. I got a watch. If this is your watch, please report to the infirmary, to claim it." (Read like Christopher Walken)

"Attention All Personnel. Local fauna may appear friendly, but that does not mean they should be kept as pets. All socks will now be thoroughly inspected, that is all."

"Attention All Personnel. The Provost Marshal applauds last night's fireworks display. He would also like to know the party responsible for igniting the ammo dump."

"Attention All Personnel. Due to eddies in the space time continuum, there have been problems with the wormholes lately. Please check all internal and external organs for continuity. That is all."

"Attention All Personnel. Welcome new recruits, to the laaannd of the fuuuuture. All recruits, report to orientation. That is all."

Games may come and go but relationships are forever baby!

this was answered during a panel at comic con. the show and game are not attached at the hip. if one fails the other will continue.

It didn't crash and burn, it was deliberately sabotaged by NCSoft out of spite.
