View Full Version : Why I'm OK with Defiance

I bought Defiance Deluxe edition with a friend just over a year ago, we played it a bit and had fun, now we've come back for our 30 days of patron status.

There are a lot of frustrating games, but fortunately for me I have avoided doing anything that would exacerbate the frustration. For example, when I saw that Bits were completely isolated, and the only way to obtain Bits was to buy them directly for money, I was pretty certain I would never buy Bits. Why Trion doesn't include a cash shop stipend I do not know, but they are the arbiter of their business model, and for better or worse I will have to live with what I consider an illogical move, but do have to say I believe someone would have to be crazy to pay a premium price for a subscription that pretty much only gives you 20% boosts :)

The game is very barebones, but because my expectations are not high, it's one of the most fun games I play, I drive around with my friend Mad Max style in a post apocalyptic world, the barebones that exist are fun. The driving is fun, the killing mobs/running missions is fun unless you do it solo and die hundreds of times constantly extracting yourself to 20 meters away from the ever-ongoing fight :)

I do like Trion more than Sony, more than Turbine, more than Blizzard, but the fact remains that a part of my problem with these companies is I expected too much from them. The "corporate person" (meaning the legally created imaginary entity that exists in the eyes of the law) is always sociopathic/psychopathic, in fact some of them are legally obligated to behave this way, legally obligated to pursue profit above all else.

It's a sad fact that Defiance was a wee bit abandoned early on, to be turned into a "Cash Pow", if they were to take suggestions from me I would hold up the financial suggestions above any in-game bugs, and that is to be more loose and charitous with the Bits, add a premium (better priced) stipend rolled into the subscription model, I'm sure maybe someone out there is paying a subscription for 20% boosts, but it won't ever be me. Me and my friend will happily roll around f2p killing mobs when we're in the mood.

Gamers need to get with the times, f2p should be sending you all kinds of very obvious signals, the entire model is meant to perpetually advertise to you, I'm on a search to find something I can trust longterm enough to invest significantly into, perhaps ArcheAge I haven't decided yet, but Defiance is very small in my mind, and it is GREAT FUN for what it is, they've done a lot with it, maybe if the show survives there'll be a Defiance 2, or a Defiance Overhaul, maybe then they will be willing to implement the tenets so that they can cater to ronin loyalists such as my self, who roam the land looking for something to support in a significant way. As it stands I'm just debating whether or not to pay $5 for the Casti pack, and I know i'll continue to have fun with the game either way so even that decision doesn't really matter much :) But I really couldn't imagine feeding real money into all these steam casino/lockbox/chest virtual gambling scams unless i just loved the game so much I wanted to throw some support upon it.

f2p is designed to keep games running in a very congested gaming market, they take high turnover rates into consideration, and rely on there always being new people who will come in and spend a bit of money, and the occasional addictive personality with a gambling problem doesn't hurt either, just ask Steam/TF2/Dota2/CSGO.

Because I'm aware of the psychology of f2p, I'm very easily offended over it (I mean on a quiet, personal, "I will never play you" level) but having owned this game before f2p was announced, it remains quite playable.

Defiance is currently the least offensive f2p game I've played, it is what it is, and I get the sense it's not the "star pupil" under Trion's umbrella right now, not by a longshot. :)

I would suggest people not take it too seriously, ride the coattails of all that Dodge and SyFy funding and just have a fun f2p PvE blast with some friends, if you're looking for more than that then IMHO you will be very disappointed.

Yes, the written word can be quite intimidating, but it makes me wonder why you even took the time to sign up to a forum. :)

So you needed all of that to say: "I like Defiance because, even with it's glaring faults and problems, it's a tremendously fun game to play."

Most of us veterans that are still here are here because it's still a fun game.

When it's running.

Not intimidating by far, just tedious and objectively wrong from the very little I managed to get through before laughing out loud. Also, I signed up because I play the game?

Lol, You dont sign up for forums to read 1 paragraph worth of information stretched into multiple paragraphs? I do!

Ewoks gave me terrible nightmares as a kid.

I stopped trusting teddy bears. Violent little bastards with their beady little eyes.

I WAS JUST A CHILD! NO ONE SHOULD SEE A TEDDY BEAR KILL A MAN!

Defiance is a good game and it has been getting better with the new changes and in fact I like all the changes and can deal with the ups and downs its been going thru.

But some can't accept change and others have no patience for bugs and glitches and lag issues and neither do I but I keep coming back for more and more and have a blast when I can play the game.

I have been here since launch and will be here till the bitter end no matter what, this is my kind of game and to say I like it is an understatement.

And I've got to go to bed thinking of this.

Well stated, my biggest problem is I'm a finicky loyalist(which I don't believe is a very common problem to have?) I want to have a small handful of games to support, but then certain things about the games make them mehhh wallet-wise, like the Bits thing I mentioned, poor f2p models, etc.

Definitely fun to play, if I were the type to spend hundreds of dollars in f2p casino schemes, I imagine I'd have a very bad taste in my mouth eventually.

When did it become impossible for a person to express his opinion without a knee jerk booing from the permanent naysayers of the internet?

He likes the game. We like the game. Its got flaws, but the price tag influences how you end up viewing them.

Thanks for the moral support bro, yeah there's a decent amount more hostility here than at your average game forum.
