Happy New Year, ark hunters! You’ve asked, we’re answering. We’re back with another action packed Defiance Dev Q&A, and our first of 2015!

http://i.imgur.com/uBWUawP.gif

What changes or features are coming next in Defiance?

We are fully focused on bringing the Alcatraz update to maximum awesome! Alcatraz will include the new hub on Alcatraz Island, our semi-procedural Expedition maps, high powered “Ark” weapons and mods, and, finally, a whole new form of progression in Cyber Rigs. It’s a heck of an update, and we’ve focused a lot of attention at making it a fulfilling experience.
What are the priorities for the Defiance team for 2015?

We’re dedicating resources to new enemies and environments for our Expedition content and using that a funnel for a bevy of new advancement options. Our initial release of Cyber Rigs will only scratch the surface of their potential, and we’re going to be expanding that functionality as we move forward. This also gives us an opportunity to take the Defiance game story to areas outside of the immediate environments of the San Francisco Bay. Since Expeditions challenge ark hunters to visit areas which are ambiguously beyond the bay area, ark hunters can learn about world developments in Defiance through events which play out there. It is in Expeditions that the ark hunters will discover much of the aftermath of the destruction of New York and the escalation of aggression from the Votanis Collective. Also, during this season, we are going to reveal the rise of yet another nation-state actor on the New Frontier stage.
When can we expect the next major update?

The Alcatraz update is an enormous undertaking, and we want it to release at the highest quality. As such, we are holding on to it so it can spend more time on the public test server. We’ll be releasing details on that deployment shortly as well as special rewards for players who choose to participate in playtesting.
When can we expect a fix for Defiant Few II?

It should be in our next patch. We’re going to retroactively alter players who are in the bad state.
What are some crazy Dev ideas that you thought of and would have liked to see in the game but were just not able to make final cut or were just to outrageous to be implemented into the game?

Shooting from vehicles in the open world - particularly from the Raptor and from the Runners – is something we’ve wanted for a while. There are some relatively minor issues with animations and so forth if we were to implement it, but there are far greater issues from a content standpoint. There is only one event where players may drive a shooting vehicle against non-player enemies, and that is in a controlled environment in Explosions 101. The enemies have been greatly increased in number in that area (both times you get the vehicle), and they are entirely optional. If we were to add vehicle combat to the open world more globally, we’d need to take a few steps.

A. We’d want to update the itemization of vehicles. We’d want to give them resistances and have some built for combat and some not. We’d add a greater chase and variety so players would have significant decisions in their vehicle progression.
B. We’d need to update enemies to better handle player vehicles. They’d need some special anti-vehicle attacks and some special behaviors to make them run to cover to avoid vehicles. This would take a significant amount of time to implement on all enemies.
C. AND THIS IS THE HARDEST TASK (Probably) – We’d need enemy vehicles. This was actually attempted a couple of times with varying success. However it was never handled in an efficient enough fashion to run with all the players we could have active at once. (With our huge player and enemy population, we have to be very careful about efficiency.)
As it stands, we’ve put player combat vehicles on hold indefinitely. I’ve personally really wanted it for some time, but it is not a good investment for the Defiance team right now. After Season 3, we’ll evaluate the feature again. Until then, it’s just a beautiful dream.

What new store content can we expect for the new year?

We’re adding store content to correlate with the Cyber Rig and Expedition Content as well as releasing a fan favorite outfit and lockbox: “Special Delivery” featuring The APS Courier. That last one will be coming later in the season, however.
When you guys (Trion) did the math did you exclude "In the Inner Circle", "In the Inner Circle II", "Echelon Contractor" and "Echelon Contractor II" or just the pursuits under the Competitive Multiplayer tab?

When discussing reaching Max EGO without and Competitive multiplayer, we did remove those pursuits from our calculation. However, we did include the DLC pursuits, since that was not part of the previous questions as they were conveyed to the development team. So, to be clear:

1. A player who has never paid for a DLC may reach the Max EGO level, but they will have to participate in PvP.
2. A player who has purchased DLC may reach the Max EGO level without participating in PvP.
Over time, as we add more pursuits for episodic content, the PvP requirement will slip even from non-DLC owners. For now, however, you must do one or the other.
Can you take us through a typical work day at Trion? What's your usual first dealings? Do you guys have meetings and spitball, or discuss what we post here and mull over them?

We actually try to keep formal meetings to a minimum. We have task lists that we’ve agreed upon based on our upcoming feature sets. We have a small number of meetings each week which last under 30 minutes. One full team meeting every Tuesday to go over our status towards our next patch and any other business that affects the full team. We also have two smaller meetings for engineers and for designers. In addition to that, Rashere, Phantasie, and I (Trick) meet as needed any time an issue comes up where we need to reprioritize work or change estimates.
Aside from that, everyone’s typical work day varies quite a bit. I, personally, come in early every morning and look over our engagement numbers on each platform before trying to get the bulk of my management and communication tasks completed before lunch. Then I prefer to spend the rest of the day creating content in some form or fashion. I try to dedicate some time each week to going on a massive hunt for reported bugs that I can squash or for organizing a playtest of new or old features to check for their completeness and for clarity in communication.

Many nights, when I go home, I end up reading communications from our partners at Syfy or writing scripts for the game itself.

Will we ever get an outfit piece similar to Ara Shondu's?

We may do one similar. Ara has a very limited movement set, and her outfit was built to support that. Since players make much broader movements, we’d need to adjust the outfit to match. (Tightening certain joints, etc.) We had one planned ages ago for the Castithan Charge pack that just did not make the cut. We’ll probably revisit a player version of her outfit when we next feature her more in our story.
Any update on private instances/Mass invite option?

It’s coming in with the Alcatraz update, but we may split its implementation across multiple updates. Currently, it’s nearing feature complete for Arkbreaks and for Expeditions. We may delay implementing it for Co-op maps and for Arenas. (Implementation for arenas would be delayed until we can better balance arena rewards. That’s a feature update we’ve wished to make for a long time.)
Can we have multiple waypoint navigation implemented to the maps? Pretty please?

We’d like to add seeing the waypoints of other group members, but we’re not considering a multiple waypoints for an individual player at this time.
Any word on a time frame for the next time the EGO cap will be raised?

It will be raised with the Alcatraz update along with some adjustments to the high-level player power curve. (This would behave much like our previous update to the 4500-5000 EGO range. We’ll have the details on that adjustment later, but it will be retroactive.)
Are there any planned upcoming livestreams?

Yes! We’re doing one next Friday! I’m hoping to demonstrate Expeditions, but we may have to restrict ourselves to showing off some other content. Hard to say. I REALLY REALLY want to show off Expeditions.
When are we likely to see the weapons tuning pass, and can we have a sneak peak for the BMG changes?

Currently, we’re working on updating weapon rarity bonuses. That’s nearly done and should be going to PTS soon. Watch for a more detailed forum post explaining those changes.

For BMGs, we’re just starting to look at potential changes there. Obvious candidates include work to tone down the particle effects, possibly reducing the rate of fire to limit the impact on the servers, and looking at the tuning of the healing effects.

Oh, we also buffed Blast Rifles. That change will hit PTS with the next update.

Will the holiday arkfalls return in 2015? Will there be additional changes to these events for this year?

Indeed they will. We’re already preparing for a special mid-February holiday. It’s that special time of year when Matrons and Monarchs show their love for one another. Which is bad for basically all of Earthkind. Like... really bad.

Some really nice stuff you're teasing there!
Really psyched for expeditions and cyber rigs. Both sounds preeeetty awesome. Can't wait to test it out on PTS :)

Sweet and loads of info :) is there any way to playtest or help out on XBOX? Or is it restricted to PC? Would be happy to help as much I can but I feel limited as to my PC is so low memory since one of my two RAM broke :/

PTS is PC only.

Yeah was afraid of that, shouldn't it be possible to access the PTS via invite or is the setup really that different? There should be a PTS for XBOX and PS since they actually are used to play the game, and there are different bugs on different platforms :) but not to steal the thread. This could be discussed in a new one.

I'm off to buy some RAM instead ^^

There are alot of problems with microsoft and sony and it would be alot of trouble (impossible if I dare say) to get PTS running on them.

Hi Trion! Your friendly gamer girl here with some questions. :D
Is there any word on private matching for clans or players on the warmaster event? We are really looking forward to hearing something about this issue.
When yall made it where we only get 7 minutes to beat him it made it extremely hard. I think 10 minutes is more fair to players and the defiance community. Also the idea with players shooting from vehicles. Is there going to be a option to have a auto sentry gun attachment added in the future with this update? Are we getting the best out of this idea? Also are we going to hear anything about the lag or use of bmg,s, infectors, crimefighters being used in massive major events causing this issue? Im hoping before all of this is released some of the back major issues are being looked into and worked on for a fix. Id hate to see more content coming out however awesome it is. When we the community of players worldwide are having horrible connections to the client and server when alot of antimations are going on specially with bmgs. Also is there any word on fixing the lock issue with the warmaster. I forgot to add this above. Will we ever hear anything about an update that will let players who I guess cannot hear or do not know that there is a difference in time with not shooting them as to shooting them? I myself have spent alot of money on this game. I love defiance. It honestly is one of the best games I have ever played. And I would recommend to anyone who loves rpg fps to come try this out. Please let us have a detailed answer reguarding these issues. Thanks always Trion <3

Perhaps you should re read the QA... They wrote about private instances and mass invites even about changing the bmg particle to be less annoying. And in a previous update they did reduce the Crimefighter so that it isn't much of a headache although it still lags the frame rate in a warmaster event. And they stated the idea for weaponized vehicles has been shelved.

When can we expect any of those to hit pts? Also, am I reading correctly that there wil be more arkbreaks? Is this related to arkbreaker dlc because I have it and it is seriously lacking in content. Finally, mention of ego cap being raised. Raised to what?

You read that wrong. They never said we were getting new Arkbreaks. This is the only Arkbreak reference I saw:

All it means is that the private instances/Mass invite option is almost complete for Arkbreaks, as well as the upcoming Expeditions. So if they release the private instances/Mass invite option in multiple patches, then the first events that we will be able to do private instances in will be Arkbreaks and Expeditions.

By far, this was the BEST. EVER. Q&A. RESPONSE. Ive seen in one year. Don't get me wrong, it's always awesome to see the community being heard and talked to, directly from Trion. But this one? Great news, great content, honesty and straight talk through and through, and the best part (for me) were these two bits:

"(With our huge player and enemy population, we have to be very careful about efficiency.)"

HUGE PLAYER POPULATION. I loved to hear that. You know, Defiance is a game that everybody loves, but I always had a feeling that it deserved better recognition, both from the game industry and players, in general. If you tell me, almost casually, that you have a "huge player population", it makes me feel, as small as I am, as a part of a great achievement, a large community. Numbers. That's what matters. But it's great to hear that.

That goes double for the vets. As if they are finally getting the recognition they always strived for, being loyal players from the start, and now, they know they were right from the start. Defiance is a hit!

This bit made me happy for sticking to Defiance this long. In the words of a great sage (The Purple Tentacle), "I feel like I can take over the world, now".

And this bit also made me jump with joy:

"We’re already preparing for a special mid-February holiday. It’s that special time of year when Matrons and Monarchs show their love for one another. Which is bad for basically all of Earthkind. Like... really bad."

HELLBUGS MAJOR ARKFALL EVENT! Monarchs rolling everywhere and making us angry in frustration! New synergies making me obsess over fine-tuning! Woo-hooo! February can't arrive soon enough.

I think I was a little too excited over this post. I'm sorry for that.

It's been a while since that list of weapons were taken out of lockboxes. Not to mention there were other weapons that should have been on that list even if they only needed small adjustments. We'll see what kind of changes are coming for the weapon rarity bonus changes. Maybe some of those weapons will get some help from this...

I read it right for this particular question. However, this was the second mention of arkbreaks and the second time I've asked for clarification. The first reference stated they were working on new arkbreaks for the future. From the last QA...

"Will we see more Ark Falls that we can go into in the future, and is it to far out to think that they can one day be randomly generated?
We are developing additional arkbreak interiors as we speak. These new arkbreaks will be used in future arkfalls and expeditions."

Will we see new arkbreaks or no? Will these be related to arkbreaker dlc or the general population? If not specific to dlc, when can we see more content for arkbreaker? It lacks content and after purchasing it I feel it wasn't worth the price.

Priorities for Arkbreaks:

1. Fix the instance. It has been broken since launch. New ones should not be introduced until all the issues with current ones are corrected.
2. Allow private instances for the event.
3. Introduce the new arkbreaks that were promised to us over a year ago.

My 2 cents

If you're talking about the DCs, I think their way of "fixing" was to keep the major arkbreaks down in SF, to try and cut down on the time outs. At least for PS3s sake.

It's more than we got with 7th Legion. Then again, Arkbreaks were hot when first introduced, and with how dead they are now I can see how newer players would think that way.

Several other issues need to be addressed though, IMO. They have already been mentioned to exhaustion throughout the forum, so won't elaborate. But, as far as the event is concerned, these should take precedence, before new ones are introduced into a broken system.

The information provided here is false. I did the math and posted the info a while back after the last pursuits were added. (http://forums.defiance.com/showthread.php?178391-Maximum-EGO-Calculations-as-of-Dec.-7-2014-for-Etaew-and-Whomever-Else-is-Interested) It is flat-out impossible right now, mathematically, for even a player who was around before the 35 EGO worth of pursuits were removed from Season 1, to reach the EGO cap of 5900 without doing PVP, even with the DLC. The absolute maximum right now for a player who was there in the beginning and has done everything but PVP (including DLC) is 5866. For a player who was not there to get the 35 EGO from the removed pursuits, the absolute maximum right now for everything but PVP is 5831.

By not including the four pursuits that require PVP to which the original question here referred, you're presenting false information due to flawed math. Until you add at least 34 more EGO worth of pursuits (for early players) or 69 more EGO worth of pursuits (for everyone else), it will remain mathematically impossible to reach the EGO cap of 5900 without PVP.

It's just as false a claim now as it was when first stated.

Hi San Carioca

Yes, its good to read this type of stuff :)

I pay close attention to our numbers daily. Both our PCU and MAU are the best they have been in a long time, and it's been rising for awhile - it's not just the surge from XBox F2P doing it (though that's a big part, of course). We've also broken several records, or been at similar numbers to not long after launch (way back in April 2013) - ie for new daily users, etc.

Now that is good news! Do you have any metrics regarding player retention/engagement?

Please fix the issue with Season 2: Episode 1: On Record. This mission is not showing up for many players (http://forums.defiance.com/showthread.php?177861-Season-2-episode-1-On-Record-BUG).

If there will be a swamp then we must get a fan-boat :) Bentu will be Swampthing and all new F2P will be afraid of him asking vets about this horror story ^^

I'm a little confused.

Are expeditions instances? Are they not explorable?
This Q&A make it sound like they are just dungeons or something similar rather than new zones you can run around and explore with dozens/hundreds of people.

Is the Bay area going to be the only "open" map? Is it still planned to be expanded upon past Alcatraz?

This ^

I only have 3 non PvP pursuits left and those will not get me to 5900.

Update: 5841 here and only have 7th Legion Shogun II and The Defiant Few II left..

Doesn't this remind you of the good ole days, Chump?

Somethings just never seem to change. Truly 'tis a pity that the good things in the game did.

something I've never seem address in the Q&A is the ability for the player to create content like custom races. Ability to place a serie of checkpoint around the world and publish user generate races would be really fun.
Or is it just another dream ?

:(

Well if that's the only way to get to areas like New York and such, then so be it.
Though I hope it doesn't deter them from continuing to expand the Bay area, like further South as Trick has mentioned in the past, or even North West or something.

Are there any planned upcoming livestreams?

Yes! Were doing one next Friday! Im hoping to demonstrate Expeditions, but we may have to restrict ourselves to showing off some other content. Hard to say. I REALLY REALLY want to show off Expeditions.

Do you know what time the livestream will be?

I'd like to see trions calculations as I have come up with the same 5831 without pvp or pursuits that involve pvp and i have all the dlcs

Curious about this as well. There was supposed to be one this week but on the channel I only see 1:30 PM for Rift and 2:30 PM (PST) for Trove.

No stream today apparently, stayed up until 7:00am (current time). I asked in chat multiple times and the channel just responded: "Trionworlds: No Defiance stream today, sorry! It looks like our hosts are out today."
Kind of dissapointed as I made a special effort to make it to this one, as I missed the last one. :P
Oh well, hopefully they do one next week.
