It's not that hard to change your IP adress, and it's a spam bot running this for a company.

Can't they track down the company? If they track the IP adress during a spam wave they can detect the macro's location.Unless they're using a remote IP adress of course but I find that unlikely.

Also, the devs can had a start post timer:you can only start a post every 5 minutes. This only counts as being the OP,not commenting in threads.

As I said it isn't hard to change their IP adress, but if you want to find the company look up "vashikaran specialist". I warn you though the companies website will try to hack your computer (Batman found this out) so unless your computer has great protection don't try to enter the site.

Won't venture into that.I'm not a coding expert and my computer uses a free antivirus.
PS:What happened to Batman's computer?Did it survive or did it get hacked?

He survived, his computer alerted him before anything bad happened but to anyone reading this THAT DOES NOT MEAN YOUR COMPUTER WILL SURVIVE.

Me too, this just gives a bad image to the game. They need to give active members the power to destroy posts from a certain user during a certain period. This way when a wave of spam starts they can make the posts disappear quickly.

it would be good if forum platforms would start being able to ban macaddress intead of IPs, at least it would do some harm to the idiots spamming. IP block sadly is good only if you have fix IP, most countries i know (specially the undeveloped ones) uses dynamic IP, so the only way to block ann IP originating from there is by blocking the whole country, besides, it became pretty much useless since the existence of proxies

Hi WhiteStrike

Yes, the spam is annoying - Im sorry its such a pain. We are well aware of it, and as Scapes mentioned in this thread (http://forums.defiance.com/showthread.php?189379-28-pages-of-spam-!-oh-my&p=1670401&viewfull=1#post1670401) we are looking at solutions.

As for an IP ban, that's essentially useless. It would take me about 1 minute to change my computers IP should someone decide to ban it. With VPN's, etc its easy to spoof.

This is exactly what I was thinking, at least it would slow down the spam a bit, and honestly does anyone here need to create several threads in a 5 minute period?

It does not do any good to block the MAC address anymore either. I can change my MAC in less than a minute.

Every single one of these spam posts has +91 in the title... make that combination the same as a curse word a boom. Problem solved.

I'm familiar with banning problems. I was in a Jedi Academy clan, well... still am but can't find my discs, and we've had some trolls on our server before that we banned, only to have them come back a while later. Essentially we said that Dynamic IP is a License to be an A**. Suffice to say... we resorted to more creative ways of dealing with those trolls, such as Telefrag Spam forced disconnect or just immobilizing them and leaving them there via Admin powa.

We also accidentially banned one of our own members because we had to institute a range ban one time, and unfortunately he was within that range. That got sorted out later.

Until a technical solution can be found... Best we can hope for is a Forum Mod to Mod Smack those spam threads when they crop up.

It's not that hard to change your IP adress, and it's a spam bot running this for a company.

Hence most corporations target the MAC address. (For example, Microsoft ban consoles reported for mods via MAC address rather than IP). Mostly because it's less common for someone to know how to modify a MAC address. Dynamic IP's are wayyy too common.

Hi Guys

Well, as I said, we are looking at various ways to fix this, as obviously people spoof and mask their identity. Many of you have made good suggestions (blocking a substring, etc), but trust me - we have done all this in the past. Spammers adapt quickly. You'd be surprised at some of the things we have to deal with, all of which take away time from development :(

I've seen the "why dont you ban the MAC address" alot too. First, to be clear - I'm not a Network Engineer. However, I don't see how its possible to ban by MAC. The original MAC changes as soon as the packet gets routed. Banning by MAC may work locally for you when people are directly connected to your wifi, or all on the same switch. But I just don't see how it would work for us - they are two separate beasts.

The XBox example you give is different. It's a case where a Microsoft developed device is talking directly with a Microsoft service. They have complete control over what gets sent up. I would guess they actually block by the GUID of the device (in extreme cases) or the gamertag (in less severe cases), and not the MAC address itself.

Yeah this is how I track the spammers at the moment, and I adjust the rule every few days as they adjust the pattern of their posts. It's a pain.

Why don't you restrict posting to only people with characters of a certain ego level? Maybe 100 or so? Rift did some similar recently and I've not seen the spam since.

Rattler20200

Restricting by EGO level might be more tricky than it sounds. You'd have to have some way for the forum to link directly to your character to verify that it does meet the minimum EGO level, and I'm sure most people have multiple characters which would complicate it. So unless there is some way to tell the forum which character to look at on an account, its not as simple as that. Throw in the fact that Defiance is a cross platform game on 3 systems (xbox, PlayStation, and PC) it gets even more complicated, most likely because you not only have to tell it which character, but which platform, and might require some negotiation with the game systems other than PC, as PCs aren't as standardized as consoles are and don't need xbox Live or whatever the PlayStation thing is.
