This is very much how we’re operating with our largest operational issue right now, the XBOX lag. We are constantly trying new approaches and changes to hone in on what is the cause. This isn’t a single bug or one problem. It’s not a programmer making a spelling error somewhere or someone stumbling over cables.

The XBOX cluster is a very complicated but wonderful beast, with very many moving parts. We are fiddling with all these moving parts, we take down the cluster, we reconfigure, add hardware to different functions, do server code updates, analyze network traffic, change the load balancers, change server protocols, move gateways around, poke the sgörneebörní (that denoted the end of my technical prowess).

For short, we have a lot of people analyzing, monitoring, watching constantly so many different types of logs, server metrics, dials and blinking lights (I’m on the blinking lights detail for some reason). We have external professionals as well, from networking specialist to Microsoft swat teams helping us out. That’s why you’ll see a XBOX client patch later tonight, it’s one attempt to change something which will remove the need for one of the load balancers amongst other things. Fewer moving parts, less things that can blow up.

We’re incredibly sorry for this state. This was by no means foreseeable. If this was just Game Server code, it’d be easy to diagnose. It isn’t. This is intra-server protocols between the entire cluster. But we’re on it. We didn’t scale these servers up from 2 people to 10s of thousands of people by luck alone.

But if you’ve been following how we do things from our last blog, here is the overview of today’s focus.

Continued XBOX issues – Lag and server crashes. Our server operations team is throwing everything and the sink at it. We even had to stop one of them from throwing a kitchen sink at a server. Yes, we’re frustrated. Don’t ever think otherwise. We even employ “eat your own dog food” and have people play on XBOX instead of other platforms.

Disappearing items!? – This has started to crop up. Now, this shouldn’t be confused with a database crash during last night, this is something far more complicated but is connected to the Salvage Matrix but probably not the cause. Rather an underlying error which happens more with the use of the Salvage Matrix. We started seeing this happening more and more and have a team investigating this. We might disable the Salvage Matrix to minimize this problem while we find a solution.

Game Server Crashes – We still have too many of these over all platforms. They will result in you getting disconnected, you can usually reconnect but sometimes they don’t crash “gracefully” and stay in a zombie mode. Now, I know we all like zombies. They can be good entertainment but not the best for deep conversations. The same happens to Game Server Zombies. You keep on getting directed to them and get messages that say the service is down etc. and then in a little while you’re fine again.

Connectivity and patching – Back up top again. We’ve gotten a lot of data so keep it coming. Some people are even finding they have to “patch” the entire client again. We’ve cleared up a lot of log-in issues, connectivity, we’ve gotten reports of much better patching speeds but we can do more and better. Keep letting us know. It helps us help you. Special note though, if you have a Beta client installed still, uninstall it. This applies to all platforms. There are edge cases we’ve gotten reported which can cause serious problems in installation and patching.

And of course, this list keeps on to change based on what we solve, improve and new issues that may emerge. We adapt. Otherwise we will die. Not being on the list does not mean we’re not working on it. These are highlights and insight.

On that note, giving you more insight into today and some indication of what’s coming up.

Huge client patch coming – Client patches are very risky to deploy so we employ a more rigorous testing process before we distribute them. We can very easily revert a server patch. Depending on testing and certification, we should see that around the 15th, hopefully sooner, possibly later. It currently has 8 pages of patch notes, listing fixes and improvements.

Good batch of improvements – We’re happy that we’ve been able to keep a good stream of fixes and improvements just through the server updates. Client updates are much difficult but we did manage to address a set of crashes and the 120hz. That’s all ongoing of course so there is more to come, especially in today’s update and tomorrows as well.

Your boosts are not in vain – We’re looking at ways to make up to you all these various server problems and launch issues. We know your boosts are running while you aren’t able to play. Not just because you said so but because the few of us that do go home occasionally, try to play from there and come back even more frustrated in the morning. We don’t feel for you. We feel with you.

Pre-order items – Great strides in getting that all sorted out for a lot of people. Again, make sure you have all your codes and enter them. Also make sure you link your account to get all these items if you are on console.

Customer Support – They are really heavily loaded but are crunching through. Remember also when submitting to them your PSN ID/Gamertag so they can act quickly. We’ve been streamlining our setup based on incoming issues, doing systematic fixes and updates when possible but also remember, they are one of our most vital feedback channels. They see everything coming in, parse it and report it so we can react on it.

You’re still here and read all that? I thank you for that. This feels almost like writing a diary now. I should mention that I have been feeling sad lately, then immensely happy, then frustrated but in the end I’m excited and ecstatic that I’m here. Because this is what it feels like launching this little game, an emotional rollercoaster. Maybe your feelings are similar.

I’m now going to run to deploy a client patch to the XBOX and another round of updates to the XBOX cluster as it just crashed. So we’re using the opportunity to deploy a client patch and do one reconfiguration since we had that planned for later anyways. Then it’s back to watch the blinking lights. Hey, why did I get the blinking lights detail? “Are they blinking still?” ... “Yes”. Something’s awry.

Oveur

We are here with you too. You guys have made a very fun and addicting game, even with the instability that I am seeing on PS3.
I love the way you are making these posts and keeping us informed.

I just have one question . . . does your office have a shower or do you have an industrial sized can of Fabreze to cover up the smell of "rank programmer with no sleep"? JK

I do enjoy how Trion allows the devs the write their posts compared to other mmos which are usually bulleted walls of text, this wall of text however; has entertainment value. :p

Absolutely love these daily updates, and I think it goes a very long way toward connecting with the game community, I can't help but hope that you will keep this going over a long period of time, if not daily then atleast weekly, transperancy is something I know alot of people greatly appriciate myself included, and more then anything it lets us know that you've heard our desperate screams for help.

On a diffrent note, I know you guys are superduper busy, but I aswell as many others would greatly appriciate if you look into fixing the marin pursuit once there is a opportunity to do so. Its reward is afterall one of the most intresting that are availible from pursuits, which makes it all the more sad that its not do-able.

Also, now that Arkfall is finally giving rewards, the 0 dmg bug has become a actual issue, since those of us who got it are actually getting considerably less keystones then before.

Thanks for these daily updates oveur, you make me proud to be a fellow viking, even if not from the same side of the ocean.

Sleep... What dat? It isn't just Oveur and his army that aren't getting enough sleep. I know I got 3 hours of sleep on launch day and 4 hours the next day. What with my forum obsession, the fun of playing this gem and some time out for real life issues (like work) I don't have time to sleep. Oh well, sleep IS for da weak.

+1 to taaltos. Stick this post! Counsel gamers are an impatient bunch (no offense) and typically have much less exposure to MMOs. They need to know how hard you folks are working to iron these issues out. There's more complaining than you'd hear in the scruggin' E-rep rank and file

And just like that, Trion jumped to the top of my "favourite developers" list.

There's nothing more reassuring than developers taking part in their community, and being transparent as well as timely with the going-ons regarding current issues and development.

These kind of posts are the equivalent of a warm blanket and a good film on a windy winters night, with purring kittens sprinkled on top.

Also, on a side-note, the Defiance launch has so far been one of the smoothest launches of an MMO I've taken part in (PC), the fact that it's multi-platform only makes such a feat even more impressive - and hopefully the XBOX issues will be solved soon. :)

Thank you for keeping us all informed. I think you guys are doing a great job!

I'm also feeling a little sad recently, as I've discovered that over time this game literally makes me feel nauseous. I have to stop having fun and walk away when it becomes too much to keep pushing through. Either the bobbing of the visuals or the FOV is the culprit, and I'm guessing it could be a bit of both. Still, I endeavor to persevere and continue to play as much as I am able, hoping some FOV tweaks are in our future at some point.

Again, thank you for being so open and honest with everyone about the state of the game.

PS. As a side note, looking at kittens might cheer your sadness. Maybe zombie kittens? I'm sure you could find those too. :)

Ah, I had 2 really good purple guns disappear, but I had half convinced myself that I had accidentally broken them down and it was my fault. It's good to know that it was a bug, even if I still miss that smg and shotgun I lost. Still haven't been able to replace them with anything as good.

I'm having a ton of fun in this game. It's so addictive. I've been so impressed with how much fun I've been having that when the game ate my 2 best guns, I didn't even really get too mad. I just told myself that it's the first week of release and I'll make due and hope to find something better in the future.

How wonderful to check up on the latest patch notes and find not just a description of what's being done, but one delivered with candor and humor. Gave me a good laugh, and that alone is worth the headaches all over again.

Now, as for those moving parts with the XBox cluster: might I suggest a ten-pound sledgehammer and a stick welder? Won't have any moving parts to mess with when we get through. Though, curiously, I suspect the final design will look rather like a stack of circuit boards welded to a kitchen sink...

Anyways. Thank you, Oveur, for keeping us up to date and in good humor!

I hope the development team/network analysts are keeping in mind that if they're doing their analytics on the same machine this could easily slow things down instead of using hardware in-between even then actually checking the traffic can cause lag in general, depending on the methods being used.

I recall a network I worked on where they always lagged and couldn't figure it out for years where it was something simple like they had a hardware firewall on the front-end which was actually attempting to log all outgoing/incoming TCP transactions, that was a nightmare to explain to them.

Beyond that I haven't played on Xbox myself I've dealt with the backend of the stuff when it came to development and reverse engineering Microsoft certainly has some interesting software you're required to run to make things compatible with Xbox Live.

If I was on your development team dealing with half that stuff I would've shot myself already.

This right here, makes me want to buy the game.

people might read that statement and say, "dude wth, he just said this game is broken as F*&^". This is true; the game isn't perfect.

But Trion is working harder than any developer I've seen in recent years to provide a quality product. Best customer service in the business- I was super sad to leave Telara after a year-long stay, and I've sorely missed Trion's dedication to making the players KNOW beyond a doubt they are more than just a dollar sign and an account number on some report. We are valued.

please keep these up so many companies lose their customers because theres no communication between them and the customer when it comes to issues and patching, i like that you're holding your hands up and saying, this is broke, as is this, and this, and this isn't quite right. rather than the usual our game is perfect, its obviously your side not ours thats the problem. and i applaud and respect you for this amount of transparency, and i'm looking forward to the patch when it comes, and reading the patch notes when they come to see what i can expect to see in the game so i can look out for them so i can submit feedback on the bug fixes :)

I find it absolutely ridiculous that Boosters you buy With "REAL" cash in the Cash Shop, continue to run out, eventho you are logged off!!
Boosters timer should only run when you are logged into the game With Your character.

Another complaint are the Inventory Slot expanders not being Account wide! Same for Outfits! Especially at those high prices you charge for some of those outfits!
People should be able to delete/reroll or simply roll a second character without losing all the Cash Shop purchases. Something Funcom also received a lot of Flak for With The Secret World! Which at least they listened to and addressed.

You really should have a look in how Turbine is running their Cash shop. Pretty much everything is account wide, except consumables like Health potions, stat boosts, etc ...but can stil be traded among characters due to a functional trade/mail system.

You will receive a lot more praise from Your playerbase when you address above issues A.S.A.P. And People will be more eager to buy from Your Cash Shop.

As right now, I myself refuse to buy anything more from Your Cash Shop like it is implemented now.

It's good they're updating the community. Doesn't replace the fact that the game will be dead in a month or two. They want people to wait 2 weeks for them to fix a game while they sit on the interest generated from all the sales. That and the fact you can complete the whole storyling in under 12 hrs in single player without grouping with anyone at all. Some MMO that is.

If we had a rep system, I'd be giving this a thumbs up. The fact that I'm able to play with only a few freezes and glitches is not evidence that it is working well for everyone, nor is it evidence that their dissatisfaction with the progress being made to resolve the problems they're having is some sort of personal failing or lack of gaming experience. Why is that so hard for people to grasp?

You do realise that any extensions to the story will be via DLC. DLC that I guarantee will have a couple more PVP maps, a few more quests. Maybe some extra vehicles and some more stuff to buy in the cash shop.

Anyone can see that happening.

1. Will the Patch Notes be posted for public? It's quite disappointing to not be able to see what was fixed so far in the Server status section.
2. Will the issue with PS3's left stick deadzone problem be addressed finally?

It's always a possibility they will take that route, but what do you mean with some more stuff? more costumes?

Huge client patch coming – Client patches are very risky to deploy so we employ a more rigorous testing process before we distribute them. We can very easily revert a server patch. Depending on testing and certification, we should see that around the 15th, hopefully sooner, possibly later. It currently has 8 pages of patch notes, listing fixes and improvements.

I'm not so sure that releasing a huge client patch on the 15th is such a good idea. That's also the day of the first episode of Defiance premieres in the U.S., and the servers are probably going to hammered with people trying to get in on the new cross-over content (will there be new cross-over content on the 15th?), and I believe that the 16th is first episode day in Europe. If all goes well with the patch, it would be great to get it on or before the 15th, but if there is a problem, that's probably the worst day to have it. If the patch can't go up before the 15th, it may be worth waiting until the 17th.

Also, we've been waiting since launch for an explanation regarding the loot. During the beta, in response to a question about the lack of differentiation in loot, Sledge responded that the loot in beta was not representative of the loot we would see after launch. Now that the game has launched, this does not seem to be the case. Will there be loot progression, or was his statement incorrect? This was the very first question asked in the forums after the first community blog post, and it has yet to be answered.

Well, it's already announced they WILL be releasing DLC for the game every couple of months to match the story line of the show. I'm certain it'll be new PVP maps and new quests. Who knows what they'll add to the store ? It's bound to be more colours for vehicles or more vehicles themselves.

The fact is are you willing to pay for that every so often just to get some more content ? It's not like they'll add a storyline as big as the main game each DLC pack. So you're looking at what, 2 hrs of extra quests and a couple of maps with a conservative guess.

Once people finish the main quest which is 12 hrs long they'll be bored. There's only so much PVP they can do on the same map over and over again until you're forced to PAY for more. Numbers of players will be down by then too. So I doubt the game will last very long, that's with me being optimistic and ignoring the fact that a huge number of players can't even get in the game and a huge number can't even DOWNLOAD a game they've paid for.

I am quite impressed with Trion. They have fixed so much in the past few days. I logged on yesterday and almost all of my issues had been resolved. I got my pre-order items, accessed the settings, got loot from an arkfall (people said this was broke but I got some nice grenades when we finished,) and had an ammo crate at the arkfall. I ended up playing real late last night and had to go to work today with about 4 hours of sleep.

Keep up the good work, Oveur. These posts are exactly what every mmo community needs.

You realize theres a pretty good chance that adding that "crossover" content will require a client patch anyway? Two birds with one stone.

I guess you aren't familiar with Trion.

They release quite a bit of HUGE content pushes with Rift. HUGE Continents. HUGE Raids. HUGE Instances. Free.

They've already announced they have plans to release a lot of free content for Defiance as well as the paid for DLC.

Hell, even now, in Rift, they've announced they are releasing another Soul as well as more of Chronicles (1-2 player dungeons) in Rift's 2.3 patch.

It's certainly a possibility. I'd expect the mission data to be server-side, not client-side, but even if it does require a patch, there's a difference between a small patch to enable a few missions and a massive patch that makes changes to almost everything. The smaller the patch, the fewer the opportunities for unforeseen consequences.

Yeah, but there's a difference. Any content they create has to be able to be played on the 360 and PS3 too. Thus it'll be tiny expansions to keep all the games aligned. They can't add immensely huge downloads to the consoles or they'll use up huge amounts of space on the HDD's.

At this point in the console life of the current generation, people should have decent sized hard drives. The XBOX version I know was 5GB while the PC version was 10.4GB.

They also said if you dont purchase the DLC, you can still access the new content, you just won't be able to use any of the new gear and stuff like that.

And I wouldn't worry about how quickly the storyline can be finished. I'm fairly certain that the episode missions will be updated quite frequently once the show starts airing. I've heard their will be new episode missions with each episode of the show. I dont know if thats true or just speculation. If it is true, you can't beat weekly story content.

As far as I understand, you don't -need- the DLCs to access the DLC content, just need it to equip the gear from that DLC. And probably do the missions. Otherwise, they'd said something about not wanting to divide the player base.

Ahh come on. Both PS3 and XBOX360 can be upgraded With large HDD's!

I bought the latest XBOX360 5GB flash disk + kinect over a year ago and added the 320GB XBOX HDD to it.

That's a lot of extra content you can store right there.

Well done Mr. Richardsson... In my eyes you have recouped much respect and credibility that had been recently lost.

Some of us work in the networking industry, and understand the difficulties. As always, honest and clear communication is ALWAYS the best policy when communicating with your user base. You have done this now, and the detail of the information provided is very much appreciated.

Ahh, the old moving parts issue, as troubleshot with analyzing blinky lights. I'm sad to say I too have been there and done that on a rare occasion.

Persevere Gentlemen and ladies of TRION, your efforts are much appreciated.

For what it's worth I played almost unhindered for an hour and 1/2 last night on XBOX (noted you shut the store down, likely to reduce some lad/database issues). I have wondered a bit, wouldn't it be better to reduce arkfalls for a while (the rewards are still naught), to continue to trim the load during heavy loads (saw as many as 15 different ark falls on the map at one point)?

I'll stick with you, as long as you continue to communicate your efforts. Thanks.

Keep up the great work. Its been quite a long time since there was a game that had me thinking about it while at work. And this game has done that! Got an open weekend and I plan to shamelessly spend hours upon hours playing :)

These are my EXACT thoughts as well.

After doing some testing myself of the disappearing weapons i can repeat the bug everytime. If you have a gun in the salavage matrix and are adding slots and enter an instance/pvp it will disappear everytime. So until this is fixed please everyone be miondful of that.

Agreed. I just picked this up today, having kept my eye on the forums since launch. I've never seen a dev working this hard to make things right! I'm happy to support this project, and as a 360 gamer, I'm looking forward to my first experience with an mmo.

Thanks for all the hard work, and for keeping the lines of communication open through the process. My little mind can't begin to comprehend the amount of work that must be involved.

Yes, the dev transparency is fantastic. It's so much easier to live through the launch bugs when you know there are folks back there working their butts off to fix these. And to know what is coming down the pike. Thanks devs and support!
