View Full Version : Defiance Machinima - Am I the only one who wants some?

For those who are unfamiliar with what machinima is, to sum it up in one simple sentence: Machinima is a form of media constructed with the use of a real-time 3D graphics engine. In other words, it's a form using video games to make movies to tell stories. If you haven't heard of any machinima works, I recommend stuff like Rooster Teeth's Red vs. Blue (http://redvsblue.com) series and doing a search on YouTube by combining "(insert game name here), machinima" in the search engine.

Now, a lot of people who are familiar with machinima will probably say, "But Defiance is an MMO, there's no way to do it." Well, World of Warcraft is an MMO, and there's quite a few machinima shorts made with it (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=World+of+Warcraft%2C+machinim a), even though the game was not designed to make machinima. But the users found a way to make it happen (using third party software like model viewers, 3D modeling programs like Maya, or even using Garry's Mod/Source Filmmaker, especially for games that couldn't possibly have machinima, by importing the models from those games. Don't believe me? There's quite a few Five Nights at Freddy's machinima, and everyone knows how basic that game is).

But my main question is this: Is there anyone else who wants some Defiance machinima? Or is there anyone else who would love to be able to make some? Honestly, I'd love to see what the community would be able to come up with if they could make some, in addition to what I would like to try if I could.

So, how about you?

Ha, I wanted to do a Defiance Fury Road a couple days ago, lol, so yes, I'd like to be able to make some !
But I need that:

I am going the route of having Trion Devs remove the HUD in order to record unobscured video to use to tell a story.

And some kind of first-person perspective and/or a free roam camera.
Because I don't know how to use Source, GM or anything else :(
So it's not for today I guess.

This is an excellent idea. This is the kind of thing that adds life to a game. Castor, next time I catch you in mumble, I'd like to talk about this.

I'm glad to see there's a few others that'd go for it like me. Seriously, if Trion did allow us to make machinima, I think it'd be a great. It'd not only allow the players to play in the game and feel like they're involved with the story, but it would make players feel like they're actually creating and expanding the story universe. That's just me, of course. But I think it'd be great to see what the players can make.

Don't hold your breath on that, I've asked twice about that in the QaA and was told they'd have a poll.
You seen a poll yet?

I've been asking for awhile myself and have heard many different answers such as a total HUD removal to a partial HUD removal. For this to work more people have to bombard Trion with requests about it so dont stop asking. HUD removal should be easy since getting electrified or entering a co-op before others removes the HUD temporarly. Now if theres a way to implement the HUDless view for a longer time:confused:

I also discovered on accident watching the character in central view as if on camera able to move in and out of frame and accidently ran the game a few times offline. Those may have been fixed for reasons of exploiting.

Well if mine craft can do it by just letting you decrease the gamma on the HUD then I'm sure Trion can do it.
Just depends on how much you want to please your customers. ;)

So, I'm resurrecting this thread because I'm considering on making a Suggestion post for this topic. I still believe in what I initially posted, that by allowing us the option to be able to make machinima, it can be helpful for the community. So, this is the final question I have to ask: should I make the post in the Suggestion section for machinima making abilities or would it be a waste of time?

Every thread created in the Suggestion Section is invisible to the devs.

The devs haven't taken on board a single community suggestion, although incursions were born from death marches.
But who knows yours may be the one.

I doubt it, but thanks for the kind words. :D

Yeah and instead of showing the credits at the end, the video could just crit out and freeze our computers. :p

Only if you're doing a Red vs. Blue-style comedy series. Or a very meta comedy, like the PreGame Lobby series (http://halomachinima.wikia.com/wiki/PreGame_Lobby), where you know this is a game and the players are chatting with each other.

----------------------

Before I begin, I’d like to apologize to CORE clan members Jordan Nichols, Kiera Ingram and BrikCodeViolator for using their character players in the pictures. I tried to ask for permission in game, but it appeared that y’all were AFK.

I was playing around in the game and I began to think about how this game could be used to make machinima if Trion gave us some tools to allow us to do so once again. However, I began to think about Rooster Teeth and how they originally made Red vs. Blue before Bungie accommodated players with some options after machinima makers started to use their game to make machinima in later installments of the game series. One of the things I remember reading and had almost forgot, was that when it came to machinima, makers had to deal not just with perks, but sometimes the constrains of the game. One of the things that Halo makers had to deal with was the HUD and weapons crosshair being in the frame. For this, Rooster Teeth cropped out the top and bottom of the frame, leaving sort of a letterbox style frame to work with. The crosshairs was always in view, but the crosshairs was never a problem for some of the viewers of the show.

So, what does this have to do with Defiance? Well, I paid attention to how the 3rd person over the shoulder view of the character, and I asked myself, “How could we use what’s on the screen to our advantage for making machinima right now if we wanted to?” Well, I tried to unequip my weapons to see if the crosshairs would go away. Unfortunately, all it did was have my character switch to pistol. But, more importantly, I began to play around to see if maybe it was possible to frame shots and if maybe it was possible to crop them. Basically, the entire left side of the screen would be useless due to the fact that the player character is in the frame, so no way for us to use it. Leaving us with only a small section of the right side of the frame, in between the radar at the top right corner and the chat box at the bottom for wiggle room. Below is the first screen cap. I should point out that my current display settings are 1920x1080. Some of the full screen caps have been shrunk down slightly to show the full screen without having to take too long loading, while I’ve included “cropped” versions at the original resolution, to show the quality. I understand that some users do not have 1920x1080 as their resolution, and may not even have an HD monitor with an excellent graphics card. So, don’t feel discouraged by this, okay?

Here’s the full screen shot:

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1614/24343134294_1fd665289c_o.jpg

As you can see the crosshairs is in the middle of the screen. Now, I wouldn’t mind it being there as a means of being able to get the shot (maybe it’s possible for static shots to be able to hold the position for filming the actor characters, and then have them move out of the way to shoot a background plate by having the camera character take a few steps over to the left and then composite the shots together to remove the crosshairs). However, for this I focused on the right side of the screen, which still gave me some room. The below shot is a cropped version of the same shot, but at the regular 1920x1080 resolution:

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1711/24973740305_c756428221_o.jpg

Now, with this, as you can see, it’s still a pretty decent size and resolution. Of course, the player cursor on one of them is still displayed, but this could be remedied in post by doing the background plate mentioned above, or just leave it in if it doesn’t seem like an issue.

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1463/24343137514_7a0fe4fb0c_o.jpg

This shot right here, I wanted to try something different. I wanted to see if I could get a close up on a character by using the steady aim (right mouse button) option to see what’d happen. Here’s the screen cap of my character positioned for the shot.

Now, the next shot is me having my character take aim.

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1687/24606112089_1b9e799b7f_o.jpg

As you can see I’ve gotten a better view of Kiera Ingram in the foreground. And here’s how it looks, original resolution and cropped.

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1580/24678231350_968aafb97e_o.jpg

That definitely looks like a well composed shot that tells a story. I tried a low angle shot, where you’re looking up at the character. So, I got my character into position:

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1497/24880417111_8edfe5d250_o.jpg

Took aim….

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1456/24343145344_8bb91662c4_o.jpg

And here’s how it looks cropped at the original resolution.

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1575/24947418306_ba54f16fa8_o.jpg

The character’s head was looking down slightly, but had it been looking up, it’d may have been really noticeable. But if the character had been standing on something (like let’s say a weapon’s vender), then it could be possible to cheat the extremely low angle shot.

Another thing is that players can control their character’s head movements. This could be useful in creating the notion that the characters are talking, though their mouths wouldn’t be moving. You could try to add a little movement to the lips in post, or you can just move the head around and have a voice actor say the lines, and it be still be enough to tell a story (to me, the lack of the mouth moving wouldn’t be uncommon to me due to the fact that for the game, when you’re looking at the NPCs during missions, you don’t see their mouths moving. In fact the only time you see their mouths moving are during cut scenes).

So, what do you think? Maybe the basic possibility of doing machinima is there?

If it's about screenshots, then I've found a couple of tricks (http://defiancerpforum.freeforums.net/thread/13/tips-tricks) on how to get rid of the interface and make first-person screenshots (scroll to the bottom of the first post). Besides, the current version on the PTS has a built-in screenshot function which takes the picture without the interface. If it's about shooting a video, then the best way to get rid of the interface is to get hit with an Electric Nano. So duel or Shadow war would be the best environment to do so.

It's not just about doing screen captures, it's about how to use the game to frame shots for video capture. The screen caps I've used are primarily to show how a person could frame footage for video footage and then crop the footage to fit their need. As I used for an example, the first season of Red vs. Blue had the footage captured in full screen and then cropped, as you can see in this video (this is before they went back and did an "enhanced" version):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BAM9fgV-ts

Since there is no real default ability to create machinima, I figured that maybe shooting video would be easy by video capture the whole screen, shoot using the right side as your ability to film because it's the only side with the most unobstructed view and then crop the footage so that you can make machinima without having to wait until, and if, Trion will release machinima making tools for us to use (or until some of our smarter players who happen to be experts in using Blender/Maya or some other outside 3D rendering program can create tutorials for other users on how to import models and create scenes using such programs).

I've got ahead and posted in the suggestions page the idea of giving users machinima options (I've included individual items, such as extended Emotes, turning off the HUD, free-roam camera, as well as pitching an all-in-one machinima tool that could work along with the game). I'll probably add a bit more additional suggestions to the list as I'm looking around at various machinima and websites about what would make for some useful additions for making machinima possible for the players and users here.

I know its been months since the last post, but I've been sort of busy with some things, which includes updating one of my in-game character's profile by using The Sims 3 to allow for what the current game doesn't have (a playable Indogene species), as you can see here:

http://img11.deviantart.net/3b0b/i/2016/118/9/b/defiance__iri_sewuel__updated__04_28_2016__by_code breaker2001-da0m3ig.jpg

Thanks to the active community of custom content creators, I was able to make my Indogene female (the hexagonal skin may not be as accurate to that seen on the show, but at least its something than not having it in the official game). I've actually started working on a Doc Yewll Sim just for the fun of it, which is a challenge because I have to use pictures of Trenna Keating out of makeup and made up as Doc Yewll. It's still a Work-In-Progress and a challenge, as its the first Sim based on a real person I've done in The Sims 3 (I used to be pretty good with The Sims 2).

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1515/26054167283_bf0386ef89_c.jpg

Now, I could do Defiance related machinima in The Sims 3 thanks to a lot of the mods available (including pose and animation boxes), but due to the lack of custom content, it's still rather limited due to the lack of content Defiance related (those there's some people who have used the game to tell apocalyptic stories).

But, to get back onto the topic of Defiance and machinima, there was a user over a while ago on Reddit that suggested an idea of having users being able to make machinima, but not on the main server, but the test server. Hearing this idea was actually quite brilliant, as it could allow for users to use the settings in the game without actually having to interfere with the normal game play.

One of the big things I think is an issue is this: even if we had a lot of people who want to make machinima with the game, the players lack of voice talent, "actors" to play roles of whatever characters are created and players who can act as camera men (as there is currently no free-cam mode for the game in either the regular server or play-test server). I know that if a clan did machinima, there's a chance they could work together to do it, but when it comes to individual players, they are left with nothing much unless they have happen to have a few local friends who play the game. So, I think that if machinima was allowed with the game (be it with tools provided by Trion or just winging it without tools like I've shown how it can be possible), we'd need a list of people who could volunteer to be talent and camera people. If anyone else has an alternate idea on how to gather forces for any kind of machinima projects, it can be talked about here.

I almost forgot, the Indogene skins, makeup and eyes for The Sims 3, I requested to user NiobeCremisi, a content creator. She not only did the Indogene genetics for The Sims 3, but for The Sims 4 as well. Here's links to the downloads for anyone who plays The Sims 3 or The Sims 4, so that you can now have them for your games.

-------------------------

Anyways, the reason why I shared the info for The Sims 3 and The Sims 4 because making machinima with those games are slightly easier to do than with the Defiance game currently. I know fans of various different franchises have mixed footage from modded games to be able to create a cohesive story. One such example that comes to mind is a Star Wars/Star Trek crossover machinima film called The Last Bastion, which used footage from a Star Trek game, as well as Lionhead Game's The Movies, with a lot of custom content to create the characters, in-ship settings and also allowed for green screening footage together. The user who created it, Mr.Poe, also did an Indiana Jones machinima short (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viS0_uvReM4), to which he doe the same thing with The Movies, an Indiana Jones game and a boat simulator. And fans have created machinima with games like The Sims 3 based on certain properties, such as The Walking Dead (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiK8hQR-9FQ).

My point is that if the main game can't allow us currently to make machinima, we can always find an alternate way to do it.
