When I'm in a group, in the group menu it says "join phase" or "the phase has changed". What does this mean?

Hard to explain -

They're in a different part of the world, they're still on your server and they could still be in the same town or village as you, but they might be doing a quest you're not up to yet, or going into a coop map or multiplayer map. It'l phase them out into a different layer of the world shall we say but they'll still be on your server. It's just a way to keep them online on that server while they're doing something else.

It means join the phase of the mission they are currently on. Some missions are solo only and won't allow you to join someone else doing it. Even the world itself has phases. Without spoiling too much, there is a certain bridge with a big mean "toll-collector" that some people can't get by where others have already passed him and see him "sleeping" when they travel across the bridge again.

Basically when they do mission they leave your phase. You can join theirs and you can actually help in their mission, get cut scenes and what not.

Unless it's a solo mission, but I don't think it gives you the option too.
