I have been using a purple assault rifle and added four mods to it which were, by the way, not added by me they were already there when I got the gun. Anyway it will kill nearly anything pretty fast. Question is does the color of the gun determine how much damage it does. Like in Borderlands Orange is definitely the best weapon to have or legendary gold.

No, all weapons of the same name type have the same base damage value. However the more rare a weapon is the more bonus stats and usually mod slots it will have as well.

White = Common
Green = Uncommon
Blue = Rare
Purple = Epic
Orange = Legendary

yeah, don't expect epic, "omg wow" upgrades, it's more sidegrades with extra bells and whistles, and synergys at higher ego ratings.

What I don't understand is that I have a rhino shield with "94" next to it, and another with "216" but they are exactly the same. All my weapons seem very close to the same with each other

yeah similar to colors in other games, where orange is rarest(legendary) and white is common

the number is just the ego level you picked it up at. base dmg ranges are pretty static. higher ego levels start to get more bonuses, better synergys, better chance at more open mod slots etc.

I have a green VOT Mass Cannon shown here:

I have been using it pretty regular for clearing large size mobs of enemies, but the XP rating of this weapon hasn't been going up AT ALL!

I have seen the rating going up on all of my other weapons except for this one. It's a green one, has the number 320 next to it.

A little off-topic, sorry, but anybody have any idea why this thing's rating isn't going up?

take a look at it in your inventory, see if it's getting any exp on the weapon itself. if it's still at zero, bug report it.

I still am not sure what synergys are lol. All I'm trying to do is collect good items and level up my ego rating

http://guidescroll.com/2013/04/defiance-synergy-list/ here's a list of them so far in game, they're relatively underwhelming for the most part.

weapons will have synergies on them at higher ego levels, plus you can buy synergy mod packs for codes (brutal and run and gun) as well as faction currency ones, think of it as a set bonus.

weapons guide might be useful as well http://guidescroll.com/2013/04/defiance-weapons-and-leveling-guide/ (no idea who put the lists together or i'd credit them, these came from a google search)

That is because you have not increased enough EGO to get a difference level of that item.

The quality of the item only affects the xp bar, the higher quality holds more xp than a weapon of the same type of lower quality. It also affects what bonuses it gets when the xp bar fills.
