--talking PC only, not sure if that matters.

So I came across this game again, after forgetting it even existed.. and got curious as to what this game has to offer, and I had a lot of questions i'm hoping people here can answer.. ready?

1. What sets this game apart from the failure that was Tabula Rasa? that was the first game that popped into my head what I saw this one.. and TR was terrible in almost every way imaginable.
2. I see Crafting/Vehicles threads... and absolutely no tangible information in those threads.
--for vehicles, I'd like to know what's available, what the purpose of the vehicles are, weps on them, armor, etc.. how they are used. I see nothing nowhere on this site anywhere addressing that. In the "vehicles" information thread, people are just saying what they want to see.. nothing about what's out there.
--for crafting, I see nothing about what can be made, what the levels are, requirements, thoughts on materials/gathering.. again, nothing
3. resource gathering, is this addressed at all?
4. Are there professions at all?
5. Are there classes?
... for the love of Bea Arthur, there's hardly any useful information on the main site.

So then I look at the weapons page.. great, simple descriptions. Right there is where maybe they can talk about various upgrades and/or how upgrades/mods are done?
Oh wait, they have a video.. I watched it, it just shows guns in action, no step by step "this is what/how you're upgrading and with what and how".

No, I'm not asking for tutorials, but instead, an idea of what this game has to offer.

content, levels, what would make me want to play this game, what's the end game, or.. what is my ultimate goal? Am I totally way off base here and missing a LOT of game information? Where is the best fan site to get information about this game?

I'm reading Metacritic reviews from gaming sites, and yeah.. not too favorable at all. "slow" "fetch quests" "repetitive quests" "no reason to play with others" "escort quests" "nothing new to the genre" etc.. someone give me something that makes this game seems interesting.. please ! :)

How much does making this a multiplatform game absolutely cripple the PC experience.. if at all? Are you actually aiming like in a FPS.. or is this consolefied and with aim assist/auto aim/ to appease the console kids? What's the 3rd person view benefit/drawbacks compared to say.. a true FPS experience instead? Is the 3rd person view to just wrestle in the console kids and their Gears of War mindsets?

Defiance is an MMOTPS, basically a shooter with some mmo elements. No classes or professions. You simply play how you want.

while the game is fun, there is a glaring lack of content and the existing content seems to just recycle the same stuff over and over again, people keep defending the game and saying they will add more as the show goes on and with dlc, but i am not hopefull, the first dlc has been pushed back by at least 3 weeks and i'm willing to bet it will not add much new content anyway since the content in the full game as it is now is so little and can be finished so quick how much can a dlc really add, and from what i understand the only content they will add with each new episode of the show each week will be a few episode missions and that cant really add more than 1-2 hours of gameplay, i could be wrong and i hope i am but i would be willing to bet money i am not.

1: It's actually a shooter. My memory is poor, but as I recall, Tabula Rasa was a tab targeting game with guns. I played open beta in Tabula and was extremely disappointed. I am thrilled with what I have experienced so far in this game.

2. Here is a website with every vehicle for Defiance. http://defiance.craftedcrows.com/ The only vehicle with a weapon on it is the Cerberus which you will only find in the second Co-Op mission (instance mission with 4 people) and Shadow Wars (pvp) for the time being. We know Trion is going to add more content as the show goes on, so we have no idea if this is a permanent thing but I kind of doubt it.

Crafting is very limited. The only "crafting" is the breaking down of weapons into salvage, and using that salvage to add mod slots to guns, remove mods from guns, etc.

3. Salvage, and you get that from mobs, missions, breaking down weapons, etc. No "harvesting" of nodes to speak of.

4. No professions.

5. There are 4 "origin's" to choose from, but this only affects your stating weapon and your unique armor look (cosmetic, armor in this game has no stats).

To add weapon mods to a gun, they have to have a modable slot. You can have up to 4 different types of mods on a weapon (magazine, scope, barrel, can't remember the 4th). If the weapon does not have a mod slot, or the one you need, you can add one (randomly chosen) via salvage. It takes 10 minutes for this to happen. You can still do things, you just can't use that specific weapon until the timer is done. Mods are mostly found via drops, quests, and lockboxes. At this time, no way to craft our own mods (something I hope they add in later).

At this time, there really isn't an end game. This game is designed around following the show. Trion has stated they have mountains of content waiting to be released, but they are limited in that if they release the content they spoil the T.V. show elements. I have 100 hours invested into the game, and have not made it to the end yet (though I'm close). Granted I do EVERYTHING and take my time, many others finish much sooner then that.

The quests are repetitive as in, they are basically the same. The enemies change, and can often present a hard challenge. However, the main storyline is very interesting and fun and totally makes up for it. You hardly notice you are doing the same "click on these things, then guard the NPC."

The U.I. is about the only console thing that seems to impact the PC experience. It's not the worse UI ever, but it needs improved on, and Trion has already said that it will be something they will be addressing soon. Other then that, one would argue that PC has the advantage for the keyboard and mouse benefit.

I haven't found a "best" fansite yet, but the wiki for Defiance is pretty informative.

I apologize that my information is all over the place, you requested a lot and I kept seeing some of the questions after re-reading. There are some great fan made FAQ's that I suggest reading. I'll see if I can find a couple links for you soon.

THINK THIS WAY: Borderlands meets Halo meets Firefly meets Gears of War.

The game appears to be some sort of amalgamation of those elements. I'm not saying that's bad.

It's fun because it's a very large open world. You can travel anywhere that's open, and more land will open up.

It's essentially a shooter with some MMO aspects added. There are other players around who can help you, and you can assist them.

There are a number of vehicles, which are a real blast to drive. There are various weapons, but it's not Borderlands.

If you would like running around in a big shooter sandbox, then you would probably like this game.

Fantastic summary. You may also want to consider reading this person's review http://forums.defiance.com/showthread.php?36601-First-Impressions!

Well, If your a fan of Horizontal progression, repetitve quests, and and an almost useless perk system, this game is for you.
But be warned, do more research before you purchase this game, i guarantee its not like anything you expect, and you will find yourself here on the forums asking why this, or why that. Its fun, takes absolutely no skill what so ever to play. If you've played any other 3rd person shooters, then you will have no problems with this game.

Theres no roles, or defined characters. Gear and weapons are bought so farming for anything is pointless. Arkfalls(world event) gives nothing but keys and xp, and to be honest, you could just shoot 1 mob and leave and reep the full benefits if someone else kill the arkfall. 4man co-op instance is fun, but pointless, again, no role is needed, and bosses doesnt drop loot, so basically its pointless. Other than the fact that you can do the instance solo with the with a low level weapon if you can agree to get a friend to just follow you and not fight..

Graphics are ok, weapons aplenty..and the game is balance beyond belief.

Buy at your own risk.

Yes, you're right. There are absolutely nothing about the things you said on their official site, simply because there are no such features in this game.

From my own experience the main thing that created those bad reviews is: this is just not a MMO"RPG", and critics can't seems to take their eyes off this subject and see the game as it is. Defiance is a pixel perfect, skill based shooter with and open world. There're no actual leveling system, no RPG crafting, no traditional classes and most importantly, no tab targeting and dice roll mechanics(which is the worst thing in Tabula Rasa).

You have so many questions that I don't really think I should answer them since I'm enjoying the game right now, thus I'm probably pretty biased, but I can tell you this: if you come to this game expecting a WoW-ish FPS/TPS then you are going to be bored very soon. This game's content is as thin as any FPS/TPS on the market. It doesn't have a massive world full of lore and stories happening around you like WoW, Gw2 or Rift, but the gameplay is way more fun than those games due to its shooter nature. There're no ultimate goals to reach in Defiance, except building a character with loots that suit your play style, enjoy the rush of killing in PvP & PvE and cleaning up these chaotic massive Arkfalls.

OP, you appear to be looking for MMORPG elements in the game, of which there are few. Think of it more as an open world shooter, with other people, on a larger scale than Borderlands, and then judge the game for yourself.

If you're looking for something to replace WoW, as awesome as I believe this game is, it's not that. It also doesn't appear to be trying to replace WoW. It's a different type of game altogether.
