How does one enter San Francisco?

Usually I'd not have the need to enter that area so fast.
But with the (timed?) Pursuits that REQUIRE me to enter San Francisco I kinda have to, dont I?
After some reading it seems like the main story line leads me to beat the crap outta that big scrapper thing guarding the bridge. I don't really like forcing my way down that way, cause I actually am the type of player that likes to do a main mission, then the side quests and trials, rampages in the area etc. till I get to the next main.

So... Is there another way to enter San Fran, solely for the purpose of the Episode 1&2 pursuits? :(

While you might be the type of player that likes to do side missions alongside the story mission, its worth knowing that unlike some other games, you're not going to accidentally terminate some quest chain.
