Welcome to DEFIANCE! Your account has been set up and you find yourself staring at the patcher! You have already entered your login and password. The blue hue of your monitor is certainly straining your eyesight a bit in the dark room your computer is in. Perhaps you should [TURN ON A LIGHT]. The patcher shows a fairly long list of patch notes that were published awhile ago, but for the most part they're not too interesting. Underneath the long list of notes is a button that reads "[UPDATE]". There is of course the [QUIT] button as well.

You try to quit, but it seems like the launcher is refusing to close. You try a few more times, even attempt to kill the task via Task Manager, but with no luck. Seems like you don't have much of a choice here as story branching is really hard to do when things are written on a whim. Either way, you end up clicking the "UPDATE" button regardless. After a quick flick of color, the launcher finally starts the game proper. The screen goes black while the game loads. [I]It is pitch black, you are likely to be eaten by a grue. Thankfully, the loud Trion Worlds logo starts, but with a few taps of Escape, you skip all the way to character select. You recall having three characters started, but you can only choose one for the time being.

Character [#1] is a male Irathien Veteran, sitting at about 50 EGO. This character wasn't played much. Sadly, it's pretty ugly. Probably one a relative made on your account because they were curious and didn't really get that far. Character [#2] is a female Irathien Machinist sitting at about 1200 EGO. The character is likely your "main". Character [#3] is a female Human Veteran at about 10 EGO. This is a character that you made yesterday, but never actually got a chance to play.

You choose your third character, despite a small urge to want to continue on your main. You have to blink your eyes a bit, the light from the monitor is still a bit strong. You may be able to help it by [TURNING ON A LIGHT]. The screen fades to a loading screen with the word "MADERA". You don't really recall being anywhere near there as the character literally stepped out of the tutorial.

Once loaded you find your character clad in a different set of "armor" than the base type every Veteran gets. Strangely enough you notice a bunch of other people here too, eerily in similar dress. You notice your EGO rating has changed from 10, it now reads 1364 and you notice you have unspent points for your perks as well.

A chat message appears in the bottom right hand corner reading, "Wait.. lol, what the hell jus--" Unfortunately it disappeared too quickly to read the whole message. You could always [OPEN] the main chat window if you were curious. A few shots ring out from your headphones, someone was clearly bored.

Your character lets out a yell, recoiling from a light hit from a skitterling. You could easily [KILL IT], but then again your shields are fine too. You could always [SUMMON] your runner, and head back towards where all newcomers start to work on your main missions. Why you have a runner, you have no idea since you never got to the point of having one for this character.
