View Full Version : Patch 1.020: An After Action Review (AAR) Part 1

BLUF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BLUF_(communication)): I am more than disappointed with the latest Defiance Patch (http://forums.defiance.com/showthread.php?73279-Patch-1.020-Buckshot-(Stay-on-Target)).

Being a career Soldier, I have chosen to use the formal AAR (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/After_action_review) format, breaking each concern down by stating the "issue", followed by some "discussion" then ending in a "recommendation".

First, a little background on me:

I've been a gaming nerd for many years but you wouldn't know it. I don't consume excessive amounts of Mountain Dew and Hot Pockets and I've never allowed myself to grow a neck beard.

Over the years I've bounced my platform allegiance from PC to XBOX making the most recent switch back to XBOX with your game but not before buying both the Defiance Collector's Edition on PC and XBOX. I appreciated the ground breaking efforts by your Company to bring the MMO dynamic to the console and wanted (and still want) it to be a success.

I co-founded an extremely successful online gaming organization titled ePeen (http://www.epeenery.com/) and over the years this group has distinguished itself among a sea of gaming clans, achieving numerous server and world firsts. I could list the accolades but that would defeat the purpose of this post. Here is a small piece written about us on Massively (http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/29/i-alliance-becomes-first-to-fully-win-a-global-agenda-zone/)...I'm the guy on the front right. You can YouTube search ePeen and find plenty on us as well. I don't type to brag or boast but only to illustrate my level of experience playing both the FPS and MMO gaming genres AND, games that have attempted to fuse the MMP/FPS genre, e.g. Global Agenda.

Okay, let's get on with it.

ISSUE: Legendary Guns Losing Stats (Nerf Bat Smash)

DISCUSSION: In my inventory I boast a collection of 20 Legendary Weapons and 1 Legendary Shield all of which were collected by purchasing lock boxes utilizing your "bits" currency. Now, I'm sure many who read this are aware of the drop rate of Legendary weapons out of Tier 4 Lock Boxes so I'll leave the math up to the reader; I've done more than my share of supporting the Defiance Game with my wallet.

Post patch I noticed a significant nerf to one of my more favorite guns for PvP, a Legendary VBI GL-1 Ground Pounder with a +6 to magazine stat. That stat and others were removed after the patch. I have examples of severe "nerf bat bashing" being done to my other Legendary Weapons as well.

RECOMMENDATION: Fix your customer's weapons...fast.

If this was intentional your company is making a mistake that many other MMO games have made which ultimately always leads to their failure: "too much, too soon." If weapon balance is your concern then develop a "road to balance" plan with minor tweaks/changes that over a course of time a player would barely notice. I probably wouldn't even be writing this post if my weapon was now a +5 or +4 to magazine as opposed to the +6. I would suggest you utilize the "lessons learned" from successful MMOs; there hasn't been many over the years so your search shouldn't take long.

If you don'y have the ability to fix the weapons I would get everyone in the conference room and start white boarding "customer compensation" ideas...fast.

I have more issues I'd like to bring up but since this is my first post in your forum I'm interested to see if I receive any feedback from this game's community managers and/or developers as well as any constructive/intelligent comments from the community (trolls bore me...comb your neck beard) before I waste anymore time.

In closing, I love the game and the cojones (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/cojones) of it's developers for bringing the MMO to the gaming console. I want nothing more than for this game to be successful however, if you disregard your customers and their concerns I'll recoup at least some of my loss by trading you in at my nearest GameStop.

All my love,

So to summarize your absurdly long after action report... your weapons got nerfed. Couldn't you just say that without all the unneeded background BS?

Also, a few tips on writing a proper report. Include more detailed information "my weapons lost stats" is more than a bit vague. How about screenshots, breakdowns of which weapons lost stats how, etc.

Secondly since you only posted this in general, perhaps including if you are PC or console could help to debug things as well as often, bugs will effect one and not the other.

I can confirm that post 1.020 my legendary and rare weapons are unaffected on PC. Those include a VBI HP-5 Wolverine, VBI HP-6 Wolfhound, FRC Assault Carbine, VBI AR2 Bonfire, and a Flashnova Pro 252 grenade.

Now I didn't log in immediately after the patch, but rather after the long downtime. I am guessing the patch fubar prior to the downtime could of screwed with the database some. I'd recommend getting in touch with Live Chat support and see if they can sort you out.

I will add that I know in a recent patch there was mention of them reducing the 'increased magazine' on Detonators and that may be what you are seeing with your one ground pounder. Sadly that can't be helped as it was a balance change. In the same boat with my shotgun (rare quality VOT auto fragger) in the new patch as it went from 20 capacity to 12. But just gotta suck it up.

good format, well written, concise, and to the point.

I'm not sure about the ground pounder, but i have seen reductions to other weapons in my arsenal. As I play mostly PvE, my observations are mostly in that focus area, so i have no suggestions for you in that regards.

I feel it may have been their intent to broadsweep a lot of weapon changes to bring the game more in line with what they envisioned.

It chaffes, to some degree, especially after I have become accustomed to certain play styles with certain weapons, and now am having to re-learn my combat mechanics....but in all......I adapt, overcome, and improvise.

so far, it's been a successful patch job.....a few minor annoyances here and there, granted.....but now we can get on with playing the game.....everything else has just left me Plesantly Suprised.

From the patch notes:

• Mag Size Changes: We have made changes to the mag size of all bonus size mods and rarity bonuses. This was largely due to shotguns getting a more shots per magazine then intended.
1. Rarity Bonuses that increased Mag Size have been decreased.
2. Clip Mods that increased Mag Size have been decreased.

What this suggests is that the mag size increase wasn't intended to be so high in the first place, unless I'm reading this wrong. It would seem that this was a fix, not a nerf.

He said his bonus stats disappeared instead of being reduced. Really long and vague way of saying it, but his +6 didn't become a +4, it vanished entirely.

I strongly suspect that is neither a fix nor a nerf, but rather a bug.
