I agree with several people here in that I think the game will end up with a solid, dedicated player base after about six months. Don't believe it will set any records but enough to keep it afloat and the TV show will help hold lot of them.

LOL your Hardcore and Casual Analogy is so a%% backwards.....
Hardcores Tend to play FAR more then casuals yes but they also tear through content like theres no tomarrow
Casuals as people like to call them dont play nearly as much as hardcores it doesnt mean they arent as good as hardcores in terms of skill but the fact that they cant put in the hours SO on that note
i would rather aim any game i made at casuals why? lets say i have 2000s hours worth of content in my game a hardcore player puts in 80 hours a week and a casual puts in 10. Hardcores would beat the content much faster then casuals which is a bad thing IF the game had a sub because there is no reason for them to stay any longer.
Defiance doesnt have a Sub so beating the content doesnt matter nor does the term hardcore or casual
As for the longevity of Defiance its really up to Trion and how they release content and what type of content is released
What keeps other "MMO's" going for so long are artificial Content Lockouts take WoW for example they have dailies that you can do once a day and Raids you can do once a week on top of that if you do a raid it doesnt mean that you will get anything therefore having to go back and try again next week then they have rep grinds to keep players busy for weeks on end and dont forget mounts and pets that have a very very low drop chance to keep people hunting for days/weeks/months/years.
I only played Defiance for about 2 days, but from what i saw in the content that was released it didnt seem to be built to keep players playing for years its not your "traditional" MMO they dont have a sub requirement so there is no need for content lockouts or any reason to keep you playing months on end.
All i can say is think of Defiance as a TPS with a very big server and youll come out happier then you would if you went in expecting an amazing MMO that you will play for years to come
If anyone played Global Agenda I think Defiance has alot in common with that game but more Pve centered and a much bigger open world. Biggest problem for GA is the waiting around for PvP and Pve mission ques to pop, there is nothing to do in between. I am hoping Defiance has enough open world content to keep us occupied.
Like anything worthwhile on Syfy, they will kill funding for it before its time.
Honestly speaking about the game: Its sub-par in quality for an MMO; at least the client I played on Xbox this weekend. For shooters, Planetside has more going for it to be honest. Tabula Rasa had more polish and features than this title does and it did superbly poor. Plus, this is a Syfy channel title: There isn't much marketing outside of the known circles of Sci-fi fans and they really should not expect much interest beyond that.
I am not sure of the game's expectations. They certainly want to make money off it and get a fan following. But what if the series flops after the first season? What if the game flops but the TV series is somewhat successful? Does one have an affect on the other?
I've honestly never seen a TV-themed online game do well. So who knows. Always a first; just not sure this one is it.
If the show does well, and the game follows the storyline of the show, as much as is possible, I think the game could have a long life. The show could keep the game evolving. The show evolves, the game evolves. I would hope that would be the case. I think any game has a fan base that shrinks some over time, whether it's online or not. If Syfy does well with the show, the game should (hopefully) go well.
IGN preview on youtube source: dev said there would be 100 unique instances and also 50 man encounters. In beta i was allowed to trade with people from anywhere in world. Loot has been confirmed to be player only, meaning everyone gets their own and will not be able to see others or steal. Classes are what you can do with the resources they give you in terms of builds and weapons, the rest is up to your execution :)
Hope this information can brighten your dimming interests :P but then again release should reveal much more i think
DUDE you think just like me on terms of everything you mentioned. All my gaming life I have wanted to play a COOP starship troopers type game and this comes as close as i could have dreamed.
Also, starting stages of a guild are in progress would love to have a like-minded soldier such as yourself join the swelling ranks :)
