I'm sad, but I have to agree with you, this is the truth... In PvP, most of perks are FOR NOW, totally useless. EXCEPT !!! EXCEPT !!! Except if you play in team.
As you may know, we did a lot of tests in my Clan. And I did a lot by myself too, when I was playing alone during sleepless nights, whatever, the fact is, if you know how to manage the perks in the good ways, you will notice there is a few archetypes of fighters you can create with perks builds.
The vehicles destroyer, the carrier, the healer, the DPS'er, the long range sniper, the close-combat fighter, the sapper, the mid-field assaulter etc...
For now, I agree, these ones are totally useless in PvP in its actual state, but, in the future, after some smart balancing of all the weapon system, with the Clan vs Clan fights, the new maps, and a deeper strategic aspect of teamplay in attack, defense, movement etc, all of this will become actually useful and will make sense.
The actual PvP is just a visual and strategic mess, mostly because you can't team up with more than 3 friends, groups of 4 players maximum, because the maps are too small for the kind of gameplay Defiance can offer, and because the maps actually don't encourage people to exploit all the potential of strategies of spreading fighters on the battleground properly...
But in my opinion, if you have the patience to wait for the Clan vs Clan and a few more maps, all of this will make sense, because it will be the major clans that will make the gameplay of tomorrow, because this will be some good players, enthousiastics about playing all the aspects of the gameplay who will leads the fights. And I really think Defiance has the potential to become an amazing future-combat-warfare simulation, if the devs actually give us the right tools, the right places etc...
Trust me, wait for it, for now it's just like a massive warm-up, almost still a "beta test" of what it's possible to do in the game... This is obvious though, how do you want to set teamplay, cohesion, strategies, when you play in a 24 players team (bigger in Shadow Wars) with at least around 20 randoms you don't even know or communicate with ? That's just impossible, for now...
But in the future, with the right clan members all in the same team, organized in sub-groups of 3 or 4 for example, each player with an assignment, each sub-group with an objective, everyone with the appropriate perks build to complete his task instead of everyone running around erratically looking for meat to kill and not playing objectives or points etc... I think it will take a whole new dimension, just wait for it...
Have fun !
