Defiance - Creatable and customizable character not just cloths. Open skills based upon user desire. Weapons and vehicles feel different ( to tell you the truth I liked the feel of the vehicles in Borderland 2 better than Defiance), much more vast world in Defiance. AI for mobs pretty close for both games but Defiance is out on top on this one.

the open skills based on your desire that you claim defiance has that borderlands doesnt is false to a degree. in defiance you can customize skills (4 of them) to a certain point within that ego grid..in borderlands they have skill trees. its the exact same concept just on a smaller scale

I sincerely hope not. I got BL 2 and the Mech expansion on demand when I was bored a few weeks ago. honestly found it to be exceedingly boring. Sure, there's a gajillion guns, but big whup

Can it really be comparable to Borderlands? I've pre-ordered regardless and I haven't played the beta, but the feeling I get from videos and the information I see about weapons, abilities, seems very reminiscent of Borderlands... Which is a plus, BL1+2 are my favourite FPS now.

I don't see how it compares to borderlands more than any other shooter. You run around, you shoot stuff, and there are missions directing you to go somewhere and kill stuff. It's an open world/sandbox style shooter, not much different than Borderlands, Fallout 3/new vegas, Firefall.

Last time I checked, borderlands doesn't have dynamic events across the world, nor does it allow for more than 4 people to play together... Where in Borderlands can I join up with 40+ people to complete an event?

to me its fun but future borderlands games will fail because lack of multiplayer i think. the smartest thing they could do is base their next game of the mmo/tps like trion is doing. as it stands it doesnt have much for replay value

Probably more, but you get my point, still a great game though.

borderlands have 5 powers, soon to be 6.
4 player co-op? Arkfall events have a hell of a lot more than 4 people, the only places limited to 4 are group instances. Gauntlet had 4 player co-op too, is it like Gauntlet?
Digitized vehicle spawns... it's a sci-fi game. unless you park your car, which would be a huge inconvenience, there is no other explanation, unless they say it's "magic" like every other MMO game with mounts does.
Rygar had a 4 legged creature that rolls too, is it like rygar?
    guns/shields/grenades. mass effect? halo?
guide in your head, they need something to help you, firefall also has someone communicating with you directly for mission updates, so do lots of other games
obviously evil character... name a game of this style that doesn't have an evil character, it's kind of the point of a game to have a bad guy
psychotic bandits... pretty much every post apocalyptic game/movie ever
post apocalyptic world... yeah, borderlands clearly invented a post apocalyptic world, even though technically, borderlands isn't post apocalyptic at all, it's colonial
character hunting for treasure? again, borderlands clearly invented that
what obviously evil company are you talking about in defiance?

none of your examples infer a relationship to borderlands. You could do the same for any shooter for the most part

i'd like to have seen borderlands branching out a bit more into the MMO style, maybe like diablo 3, instances for main story, but open ended areas for random stuff

These are standard MMO procedure. In almost every MMO out there when you die, you respawn at a safe point, hell, even Bioshock Infinite does it now.

Hunt for loot.... People want to find buried treasure, again, standard MMO trope, it's either that or "save the world", but most players play to acquire better loot, to be able to progress the content to obtain more loot.

These are standard friendly fire rules, not nearly just borderlands, but any co-op game where there's splash damage.

I think the only comparison would be the whole theme.
