    Fair comparison to Borderlands?
Hey guys, been seeing this game compared to Borderlands a fair bit, not just on these forums but on comments at news sites, etc.

Can it really be comparable to Borderlands? I've pre-ordered regardless and I haven't played the beta, but the feeling I get from videos and the information I see about weapons, abilities, seems very reminiscent of Borderlands... Which is a plus, BL1+2 are my favourite FPS now.

Others may not agree but think borderlands in a open world environment. a one time load in huge zones (assuming you do not fast travel to friends/towns) to shoot to your hearts desire while doing quests and having kickass vechicles to climb mountains/jumps/flips/explore on the way to your points of interest.

Other features include 4 player instances, dynamic events, and future large group oriented encounters.

Yes it is a fair comparison. A lot of the concepts are very similar. The raiders are a perfect example. The damage types on the weapons. The EGO powers, etc.

I'm sure I'm going to catch a lot of flak for saying it. But it's true.

That being said, I still preordered and am very much looking forward to playing Defiance. It has the elements that I thought Borderlands was lacking.

    I'd say so.

    Four different powers? check
    Four player Co-op? check
    Digitized vehicle spawns? check
Four legged creatures with tough shells and they roll? check
Focus on guns, shields, and grenades? check
Random chick inside your head who guides you? check
    Obviously evil character? check
    Psychotic bandits? check
    Post apocalyptic looking world? check
Character is hunting for treasure? check
    Obvious evil company? check
Probably more, but you get my point, still a great game though.

Played Borderlands 2 for 15 minutes, uninstalled.

Playing Defiance for 2 months, purchased.

The hunt for better weapons and other loot, the respawning at a tower near where you died, the part about you can hurt yourself with your weapon but not another player unless it's PvP.

I saw these in Borderlands (2, mostly, since I never did 1 with other players) and I see them in Defiance. Perhaps if I'd played more such games I'd rattle off more similar ones, but my depth is limited...

I enjoyed Borderlands 1 and 2. So I will enjoy this game. It's a much bigger better version of Borderlands.

If you didn't enjoy Borderlands then why play Defiance? It's Borderlands Online. The only major difference in the gameplay is that it's MMO based as opposed to solo or co-op.

    It is quite like borderlands...
Alltough, like some above, I just played it for 15 minutes too before deleting..
The graphics and the strong, cartoonish colors made me just feel bad and sick...,

Defiance, on the other hands, good graphics, and great gameplay,,

Well other then that they share elements common to many shooters, these two games are very different

They share more than elements common to many shooters. A different artistic style and slightly tweaked world concept is hardly very different. Defiance has added some elements not present in Borderlands. But these games are closer to being very similar as opposed to very different. Not that it's a bad thing. I enjoyed Borderlands 1 & 2. I was impressed with what I got to see in the beta of Defiance and plan on playing it for some time to come.

Eventhough i have to agree that its got a lot going in relation to Borderland games i have to say this.

This is for me personally much more like a succesor for Tabula Rasa with a borderlands topping.
In the end TR already did dynamic events (base take overs, dropships middle of nowhere ect ect)

And graphiclly i get a same feeling in some places.

Before Borderlands went cellshadedlike it looked kinda like Defiance, so as long as you dont mind more reallisticly looking game you will like Defiance if you like Borderlands.
That is minus the humor imo, havent seen much ff that in Def then again its a different angle on the setting.

It's a mixture of two MMO's really. Tabula Rasa + Fallen Earth. They used a formula from borderlands that worked, and its quite solid of a game. Well worth the purchase on a console without a doubt. PC? Eh... there's so many F2P's its hard to choose.

Oh yeah, Defiance is definetly a more serious version of Borderlands (and i mean this in a VERY good way).
Heck, i was even trying to build my character skills to be like Zer0 from BL2 lol

Hopefully the loot drop is better in Defiance than freaking Borderlands 2 :)

They're similar in design, I suppose. They both have random gun drops and take place on a sort of backwater world (at least in the Defiance starting zone), but Defiance just plays better in my opinion, and there isn't a segregation of classes. And as far as I've seen, Defiance has a better solo story aspect. I guess it's a more fun and engaging Borderlands that also happens to be an MMO.

I don't think this game is compared to Borderlands. I just don't see it.

It's definitely a fair comparison. When I got my friends to try the beta all I had to tell them was imagine a 3rd person Borderlands set in a sci-fi setting along with an MMO world.

You ever play Borderlands and say to yourself, 'hey this is cool but It'd be even cooler if it was a persistent world & third person!'

Why can't we have 3rd person view in BL2?
    Because its a FPS!

But yes, they have similarities :D

Is it similar to borderlands sure, cause they are both loot-driven shooters. Is it a rip off like people are saying? No. I think most people who are saying that are console players who haven't been introduced to fps mmo's before. Part of the reason they share similarities is they are really both "stealing" from the same sources.

However the core attitude of the gameplay is different for these two games.
Borderlands feels like a shooter first, with coop and loot added in to give it character.
Defiance feel like an mmo first, but made a shooter to give it a character.

The shooting and gun gameplay is a bit tighter in Borderlands because it was designed to be a shooter first. Defiance makes more concessions for MMO genre. Is one better then the other, or is Defiance ripping off borderlands? No, but they do share similarities which they should for two games about loot and shooting.

Yeah I'd say the same. The comparison is more than fair and there are many similarities, but they are different enough.

it's only a fair comparison to borderlands due to the somewhat random nature of the loot. however borderlands is similiar to diablo in that regard so...what are we really comparing here?

it's a third person persistent world mmo with a central story, side missions and further content tied to another story from the same universe. it is in some ways unique. the combat system is about what you would expect from a genre that spawned gears of war and mass effect. the modding system harkens to mass effect 1 and 3. the classless setup is unique.

elements of defiance have been done elsewhere, even in tabula rasa, but this is the first time taco bell put all of the ingredients in the burrito and didn't forget the sour cream. (sorry, very hungry atm)
