Buying game should enable download of Show episodes
Since the game and the show are supposed to be two aspects of the same experience:

Im living in Europe and a bit worried about airing times for the TV Show.

If Syfy actually airs the show in Europe the same day it does as in the US then everything is fine, but i would be pretty pi**ed off if i had to wait a week or longer for it to be broadcasted here...

So, to overcome that, let me suggest that buying the game should give worldwide access to download the episodes (including commercials, if that helps).

I *will* watch the epsiodes here as well, but i'd prefer it to be via legal means...

Yeah this is available all over the world not just the US. So if the show isn't on within 48hrs of its original US airing wtf.

*waits for Defiance to be the most illegally downloaded tv show ever.*

This kind of piracy is actually very legitimate if the company has put no effort to make the product easily available meaning that they wouldn't lose any money anyway because they weren't selling it in the first place.

This goes for many TV shows that are not available in a reasonable time frame and accessibility. Unfortunately TV show distribution is still quite primitive compared to services like Steam or Origin.

I totally agree, started a thread with exactly the same idea some while ago. The situation is especially problematic in German and Italian speaking parts of Europe where TV shows are usually aired after they have been dubbed which takes 4-6 month...
Other parts of the EU might be easier to handle because they show English shows subtitled (like Sweden for example...) which can be done much faster than dubbing...

It should indeed. Aint TV-channels quite cheap these days.. less than 10 bucks a year. I hope I can just download it and watch on my PC, I dont need subs either.

hmm it might be interesting if the show was view-able through the game client.... that way the shows ratings would be higher as well. I am willing to bet a very large portion of the shows/ games fans will be watching the show online. This means lower ratings and could hurt the show.

I really doubt that they would do that :S

well at least the first epsiode is already written and filmed so we won´t have an effect on that episode, but the episode might effect our game experience in some ways.
Next is that Syfy will broadcast the show beginning at 18th APril if the website is still correct :P
But thats for Syfy (US) dunno if Syfy(EU) will get the rights as well on the same day, hopefully! @_@

so all in all we might have an effect on the 2nd Episode of Defiance.

only way i see this being possible is buying a "collectors" type edition that gives you access to the show, and obviously it will cost more since there are production costs that go on for the show and those need to be funded somehow.

i wouldnt expect anyone to include that as part of a normal priced game.

well that option would be not possible since not anyone got access to paytv so far

IF you're really concerned AND you don't mind paying, there is always iTunes, Xbox Video (aka Zune), Amazon, Google Play, Vudu, etc... Obviously every country will be different and not every content provider is licensed worldwide, but in this day and age there are legitimate ways to access content on a timely basis...not that surpassing Doctor Who as the #1 illegally downloaded TV show would be a bad thing, lol, but let's face it, the only vote we have that really counts is where we spend our money...

Can only hope that SyFy streams it at the same time it airs, or if Trion Worlds streams it. Thing is it should be open for all to see.

New episodes should stream directly through the launcher IMO.

Interesting note. The last I heard the current most illegally downloaded TV show ever is Game of Thrones.

The reason for this is very simple, it's a very popular show with extremely restrictive viewing options. You must pay a premium just to have access to the HBO content, and it has to go through an appropriate paid television provider like your cable company. There is no option to view it on any number of streaming services such as Netflix or Hulu. Your only other option is to wait for the DVD release. If you want to actually talk to friends about what happened in the show that week this is not much of an option.

It's funny because if they had made the show available through other means they would be able to rake in a TON of revenue from people that would no longer be pirating it. The solution to piracy has always been simple, make quality products, make it easy to get.

Ultimately it's up to SyFy to make sure the content becomes available. And they have far more to gain by making sure their customers have access to the show.

That would be pretty sweet. It would hurt long term sales of the show, but still would be cool in the now.

Please don't let SyFy ruin a good thing for Trion
I usually watch the SyFy (why did they bother changing the name from Sci-Fi?) shows that I want to watch through Hulu as I don't have cable. However, according to Hulu this is SyFy's policing regarding streaming shows:

If the show has any significant impact on the game, then not having access to new episodes in a timely manner will most likely impact my willingness to play the game, which is unfortunate as I've had the opportunity to play in last weekend's Beta and had a lot fun. I'd like to continue to support Trion (I've been playing Rift since its beta), but if SyFy cannot hold up their end of this project I may have to skip this one.

They should simply include an ad-financed webstream (or the link to it...) in the game launcher and everyone will be happy!

DO YOU HEAR THAT SCYFY AND TRION PEOPLE!!!!!!

That would ruin sales of the DVD/ BluRay set and enable a further source of piracy imho.
