that's precious, needing trophies to show "accomplishments" in a game.
why did you play video games the 30 years before xbox 360 with it's achievements lawl.

i hate people complaining about pve content being too easy, pve content is always easy. it always has, and always will, dont lie to yourselfs and think that alienating worse players and not even allowing them to level will make the game a better place.
just play in structured pvp matches, im sure this game will have some sort of ranked play.
always had this issue in standard mmorpgs, like wow, zomg its too easy, no **** its easy, its scripted events, its the same thing over and over with some added RNG to make it more interesting. making pve "harder" will only serve to hurt casual players, and higher skilled players will not really benefit from the experience.
Did I mention achievements like that? No I did not.
What do you accomplish? Weapons are all the same so a quest item has a special name beside it but stats will remain the same to allow people of any level to play against each other. So why complete the quests if that quest item is no better than the item you just bought from the store?
I am playing because of its connection to the show and that is pretty much the only reason.
what do you need to feel accomplished. an uber rare lazer pistol with 4000 fire dot on it? or a suit of armor with 100 mod slots and can shoot projectiles from its butt plate...comon, try something different, like i said we dont know what is going to happen, your complaining about something before you can even really complain about it...
I understand it wasn't finished and their is a significant amount of content is missing but we were shown the core of the game. No matter what is released that core of the game will not change in any significant way. So I ask again beyond getting more of the lore of Defiance why play at all?
I did all the story and side missions but I almost never used the quest items because they were occasionally worse than what I already had or had dropped off an elite. I wanted to find out the story of what happened to Tranquility. What happens when the main story runs out? What is the staying power of the game at that point? Where is its draw to keep players around between content updates? Its not raiding since weapons don't matter.
I've played a LOT of titles at launch over the past decade. I've seen people imply here that the casual crowd barely plays, and moves on to the next shiny as soon as it's out.
I'm not sure that is entirely accurate. From observing many launches, it's the hardcore crowd that devours content like locust, and then moves on. The casuals, who often explore many aspects of any title, at a more moderate pace, tend to stay around longer, and their guilds become juggernauts.
While some members of each type of player do move on after a few months, since casuals are a larger crowd, I believe it's foolish to cater to the hardcore folks to the extent of alienating the more "average" player.
Balance is key, here. And that is the daunting undertaking of a design team.
Clearly that's what I am saying *Eye Roll* but that content is not complete yet (it can't get to far a head of the show in what is revealed) so what happens when the story missions are complete? There is no point to gathering new weapons since any weapon can be upgraded. There are no raids at launch. PvP really doesn't do anything beyond give us the ability to pew pew each other beyond outfits (gotta catch them all). So what makes this game an MMO beyond people running around your group of 4? What will keep our attention when the story missions run out?
I am playing the game for the story since no other aspect matters in the slightest to getting gear or improving above the others who didn't do those things. So you have an outfit that makes you look different. Pursuits are just in-game achievements/trophies that don't register on XBL/PSN and much of what they reward can be found elsewhere. So again why do it?
Why play any game, for that matter?
"Meaningful gameplay" is a red herring.
Want a deep, meaningful story that holds you rapt? Here's a thought, read a book!
Development hours spent on game story experience diminishing returns past a certain point because so many people just blast through all the leveling time, trying to get to the "big mobs" at the end.
Why kill them though in this game? It nets you nothing special. They spent so much time dumbing the game down that any unique qualities are lost. Granted I like being able to play the character I want with no linear path, but there is nothing that separates human from alien. The only reason I chose an alien is because looking at an animated human gets dull after a while.
I am going to play Defiance but I am not sure for how long it is going to hold my attention for. If I complete this pursuit or do that quest I still get nothing that makes that distinction matter. Any gun can be modded and upgraded. Nothing has an edge over the other beyond niche combat roles for the guns and where they excel etc. When the story is done what is left? And I look at Defiance and can't answer that.
