Iam not so worried about people playing females but more about them trying to make a fuss about it .
Is it macho insecurity or are they the ones we should be worried about ?

The need to date with someone unknown tells me how lonely and desperate some folks are.

Voice check when in doubt ;)

I've had a "female" try and charm free items from me, so I just posed as a guy and went along with it for funsies. A guy who refused to give anything, mind you, but it was fun.

I generally just believe people about their gender because who some stranger behind the screen is doesn't really impact me in any way. If I'm going to make friends with them, I usually have enough to base my opinion on their gender by then. I do know some guys who play as female characters, though none of them are the way you described it in the OP. Most of them are just normal guys who admit to being guys openly and some of them are gay or transgender. None of them are e-gold diggers (or they just won't admit it to me because they know that I dislike it... Hoping that's not the case!)

I play as a male because I am male and like to role play i.e what would i do if it was me,
also when someone says they don't play as a guy cause they want something prettier to stare at
i always think why are you staring at your avatar anyway? I always look around for enemies, loot , etc
    not my characters ***.

itt: men flirting with men pretending to be women who call guys who pretend to be women to get money creepers to distract from the fact they have all hte tell tale signs of being the kind of people they are calling creepers.

i player female toons because i grew up with strong women action heroes like ripley and buffy and janeway and so on. badass women with sex appeal who kick serious ***. kids growing up on twilight and harry potter have no clue really.

i don't pretend to be a girl though, nor do i attempt to decieve anyone, nor do i solicit for hand outs from strangers, nor do i accept unsolicitied handouts based on people thinking i'm a girl.

what's realyl creepy is when guys rush to hit on girls at the first sign of a "female". could be girly name or girly avatar. could be in voice chat and they talk for hte first time then the wanna be cassanovas pop up to instantly hit on the girl. so obnoxious. they can even be made aware that the girl ( if proven to be a girl) is in a relationship with the guy in chan with them and they claim to have a gf or wife themselves adn there they are acting like horn dogs. or on forums hitting on "girls" because girly name and girly avatar claiming they wouldn't do it in game but there you are doing it on forums.

none of these people are convincing anyone.

makes for good entertainment though for the rest of us. go on with yo badselves dawgz, embarass yourself moar.

I tend to play female chars, especially when not FPS.
In MMO's you tend to spend a lot of hours staring at your screen and char so I prefer a virtual female's a-ss (dafuq why is that word censored...) to look at then a dude's...

I've been playing MMOs for over 14 years. I've never had someone playing a female character try to "charm gold/loot" off of me. I often play female characters, because I prefer to look at a female character when I play. I've only twice had guys act in an inappropriate manner towards me and only once did I have some guy give me gold out of the blue because my character was "pretty". (That last was a long time ago, when most guys didn't realize that many female characters are played by males).

Interestingly, I did have a few instances of women getting "catty" with me when I was playing a female character, but that was just in World of Warcraft, where for a time some people just took guild politics a little too seriously. Aside from a pair of idiots in 14 years, the only difference I've encountered between playing a male character and a female character has been that a lot of people were less likely to follow my lead or take my suggestions in a party when they perceived me as female.

Anyway, the entire "free loot" thing is extremely overblown. I'm sure there are guys and gals that flirt for favors, but as a long time vet of the genre who has played for many thousands of hours over the years, I've seen very little of it.

I do realize that being an MMOTPS, there is bound to be some serious overlap in the player base between MMO players and TPS/FPS players. My impression that avatar gender reversal is a lot less common in the latter than the former, especially in games with a high percentage of players using voice chat. So, even though this is "old news" for most MMO players, it doesn't surprise me that some fans of this game still see it as an issue.

The MMO space has pretty much "gotten over it" and with many games having less than 25% female players, but showing over 50% of characters being female, it's clear a lot of people do play characters of the opposite gender. (Polls show a fair portion of female players occasionally or often play male characters as well).

So, I'd just say, if it bothers you, get over it!

On SP games I use female characters for that reason, online games, however I use male chars to avoid upset!

never understood the " i make female chars cuz i like to see a female from behind rather than a male char". Do you really stare at your char when you're playing?

I mean, character customization is important for me as it gives you that sense of uniqueness. But i don't stare so much time at my char to a point i need to make a female.... i just play the game.

When I'm playing any online game, i never look to the other people as male/female/kid/adult. When I'm online everyone are "gamers" to me.

why should you worry about other people getting upset by something like that?

it's not their toon. if they get upset with you playing the toon you want the way you want it to look it's a pebcak issue.

I'm not worried, just can't be arsed with the hassle of fighting off horny people especially as I like to RP. Mind you, I don't suspect this game will be anywhere as bad as other mmos I've had the it happen in... must admit though... it was funny seeing them go from charming to spiteful in an instant!

it happens alot less than you seem to think it does.

last time i had some rando stranger assume i was a girl because f my toon was tera a couple months ago, last time before that was in 2006 in l2.

pretty rare to get hit on because of your toon in a game.

more likely to get hit on on forums because you have a girly name and girly avatar, as seen in this thread.

Ummm...no. Most of us are horn dogs who downplay how much we really enjoy watching a hot female avatar's backside. When some of us say "I'd rather look at a female behind all day", we really mean "one of the benefits of playing a female character in a game is that we CAN stare at an attractive female character all day".

Ironically, I tend to wonder about the guys who refuse to play female toons. I mean, what red blooded guy would rather stare at a male backside all day? :)

Seriously though, I'm sure there is a very small percentage of players of opposite gender avatars who are actually dealing with gender identity issues. For those people, I'm glad a game can give them an outlet to express their internal gender. However, most men who play female toons are completely hetero and really are making the choice for "the view". On the flip side, most women I've known who play cross gender do so to avoid being treated differently because they are female.

There have been studies on gender in MMOs and all of us who have been around long enough are informed by our own experiences as well. People have all sorts of reasons for the gender choice of their toons, but most guys who play female toons do so because they are really, really into girls!

I must admit since I got rid of my PC and stuck to consoles, I've not played MMO's for a while. It used to happen to me quite a lot in SWG, MxO and GW but perhaps people online have wizened up since then. I tend not to RP too much on forums so I don't have the girly name/avatar issue.

That being said, I'm sure I'll create a female alt Character at some point.

mileage may vary. tend to see it/hear about it more often in f2p games these days. i hear it's more common on consoles as well.

certainly on places like reddit people can and do do this stuff. and there's plenty of people out there that are only too happy to hit on other people at the slightest hint of being a girl.

actually we picked up a girl in a game last year in our guild that was laughing at my other guildie trolling by telling people he was a girl. she didn't buy it and then happened to be looking for guild in anotehr chat chan. she was like "this guy isn't for real is he?" and i was like, "hop in mumble and see for yourself". she got a big kick out of it.

we all flirt and tease in my guild, but we're not out to date each other. she also doesn't ask for handouts and doesn't ask for special priveleges. she does ***** if we're doing something she doesn't find fun, but i think that's a fairly reasonable thing to qq about.

also alot of us play female toons for different reasons. as well as like to play dress up.

but yeah generally speaking haven't seen people assuming that we are girls irl.

but like i said i find it obnoxious when someone does turn out to be actually a girl when they come into voice and there's always that guy or those guys that instantly start hitting on her. it's like bro cool your jets. she's not here to find prince charming, she's here to get her game on.

Probably a good assumption. Now we just need an app that cross references these players with the Registered Sex Offender database. Not suprisingly a lot of Cho-Mo/Pedos use online gaming to continue the same activities that would be considered illegal for them to engage in if they took place in the real world.

It doesn't matter one bit. I saw a boy, who couldn't have been more than 14, buy a copy of Age of Conan at Walmart. Just because they say there is an age requirement doesn't mean those under that age limit will not slip through.

haha this is hilarious, just cause an avatar is a girl i have no difference in my decision making, ill be like f off girl i aint your sugar daddy, kinda what i would say in real life. go figure

when i was younger my cousin gave me his id and got a new one, so i would go clubbing with my sister and her friends, and i would see how easily they would work guys for free drinks, and they would hand me the drink right in front of them... from that point i knew girls play guys so much and they fall for it nearly every time, i wish every guy had an experience like that, cause then they'd know better then to fall for their acting

I always have to wait the 10-15 seconds after joining a new vent/TS of "oooh a real life girl...", and in EVE even though I talked on vent all the time I had a corpmate who had a policy that there is no convincing a player in eve is female "there are no women in EVE" was the mantra lol.

I met my husband in EQ1, times were a wee bit more innocent back then about cross dressing toons IMO too. I'm no more inclined to give a female char something than a male.

I'll agree times are not so "innocent" if they ever where and a few stalkers later I don't give personal info until I've know gamers for a while, like most games these days don't last long enough to even qualify hehe. Guys seem to be all excited about posting pics and joining gaming FB pages etc and get all touchy when you say, yeah no I'm not FB friending you lol. Guys get more touchy about wanting "proof" you are a girl when I don't want your potential stalking behind having pics, old gamer names/tags, my FB connect, etc etc.

I don't care even a little about the cross dressers... if their weren't any the MMO landscape would look like a sausage-fest. I will say "ooh girl you don't even know.." and refer to you as "She" alllllll the time though haha well after it's been disclosed you are a G.I.R.L. Comes with the territory..

I roll with whichever has better animation. The female characters in Dragons Dogma look great. In Dark Souls Witch Beatrice's outfit is stunning. Especially when you have a high dex build and a katana. In Mass Effect and Oblivion the male class look badass and have better armour. The idea that guys who choose to play female characters are secretly gay is incredibly insulting. It always gets spewed out whenever this topic is raised and the undercurrent of homophobia it contains reflects badly on the gaming community.
