Australians, do we play in EU or US?
Most big games like defiance have oceanic servers for Australia and nearby countries, because everybody knows we get terrible connections out to standard EU AND US server areas..

Seeing a lack of Oceanic options I assume - as one of the countries with the largest gaming community in the world - and I re-iterate 'ONE OF' (somebody had a problem reading that part and felt it necessary to stray off topic), we are going to have a REALLY - **** time - dealing with pings upwards of 400-800.

SO - I guess its just a question of the lesser of two evils, should we be playing in the US or EU with this game, I didn't get a chance to play the BETA so I have no idea what the ping's are like.

Any Aussies around that know, or just someone who has a fair idea?

I would suggest playing on the US servers, but that's just cos I'm trying to steal as many people as I can from the folks across the pond....WE WILL HAVE MORE! /challenge

Haha well we don't seem to fall into either perfectly so if I get enough of a US response, that will be where ill be directing myself and my mates ;D

So how many times does that mean I need to post that you should play on the US server?

If you care about having less lag then US is the way to go.

Play in the US, because Aussies are cool and we need more of them. This will contribute to late night gaming for us.

Very few games launch with Oceanic servers, sadly.
They usually take a long time before they even consider offering oceanic servers, thankfully PS2 offered a single Oceanic server on launch.

Anyway your best bet is US, the servers are a lot closer, and if you are given the choice go for US East I think it is as they are even closer again, or was it west, waaaaa I cannot remember

Anyway I play several other MMO's where I have to use US servers and I get a ping of 160-250ms so it should hopefully be the same, 250 is about my threshold any higher and it becomes horrible.

    (I am in New Zealand)

Only reason games don't get oceanic servers is cause Telstra are freaking so picky with who they let have servers/tunneling. last mmo I remember playing with Oceanic servers was Ragnarok online OCEANIA. Although Singapore servers give decent ping also.

Fortunately, PC only has 1 US server, and lucky for you guys, they're in Cali.... Much closer than Europe...

Star Wars the Old Republic actually has its Oceanic servers hosted in Australia, so to those I get a ping of 30-35ms, too bad SWTOR sucks :(

Obviously you haven't been to the US recently...Our alcoholics can give yours a definite run for their money....Sure we've only got half as many, but they're twice as good.

I think our American beer sucks. I've always drank imports (well most of the time, with the exception of fraternity parties with Natty Light and Bud Select)

Either way, Aren't you kind of considered closer to the US?

Also, have any of you tried Berenschlager? (Baronschlager? I dunno how to spell it...) It's a German vodka-based Mead, and it is wonderful.

I would go with EU mainly because we all know that the USA has the slowest internet in the world. Almost everyone in the EU has better internet than us.

US servers... around 180-240MS on average. Using a tunnelling service with reduce this even more. Here is gameply from the BETA from an Aussie point of view, its not too bad.

Actually, Trions US server site is in Dallas, Texas. But the Aussies should not much notice those few extra hops from California to Texas after already hopping the Pacific.

Don't get me wrong, I would love a local server. However, so far that never really worked out. Singapore might be the best option?!

Much less likely to be hit by some untoward natural phenomenon in EU though, unless they stuck the data centre next to mount Etna or Vesuvius ;)

    You're welcome

I think any Aussie based gamer on the Aussie East Coast would be mad to play on EU. I have experienced 300+ MS on other MMO's on EU servers, I cant comment for WA or NZ connections. I play rift through Pingzapper and I experience MS of about 180 to the US servers and the impact on the game is minimal, but thats my opinion. As the defiance servers are in the exact same location as the RIFT servers, no doubt pingzapper will support Defiance. Pingzapper is the old Wow Tunnels.

Well as they're not in Cali like you suggested, they don't run the risk of dropping into the Pacific anytime soon.. doesn't Dallas get tornadoes and hurricanes however? :p
