Two folks just gave the most embarassing demo of all time at PAX
Greg was demoing a new Rift Raid on a lap top and the power cord wasn't plugged all the way in so it lost power during the demo. This doesn't have to be TOTALLY a career changing moment, but remember they only have 15 minutes allocated. He DOES get it back up but now they are pressed for time so he uses his GM powers to kill a boss and advance the raid... This bugged the raid...

I think they will show this new raid again this coming Friday BUT... That's like preaching to the choir. The folks who will be watching on Friday are already sold on Rift. These PAX TwitchTV spots allow them to reach out to a much larger audience. This opportunity was either wasted or destroyed because they didn't plug in the power cord... I WAS EMBARASSED. I wonder if Greg and Elizabeth were?

They will close the topic, because you use their names in the title! :( Time would have to learn.

I assumed it was a last minute decision to attend PAX, so they just brought a laptop. Embarrassing or not, it was nice to see a part of the Defiance team.

I found the AMA link: http://www.twitch.tv/twitch/c/2850533 but looking forward to more. OverloadUT looks like a chill and likable dude.

I missed today's because I don't play rift. Yesterday's watch was a complete waste of time, no real answers or info given to people's questions. As for today, I feel bad for their misfortune.

You're easily embarrassed then. I once stripped down to my birthday suit in a drunk tank and rubbed my junk on the glass in an attempt to impress the lady jailer.

It's one of my proudest moments and I ended up dating her for almost 2 years.

Technical issues happen, especially if you are in a different environment than usual. It's definitely humbling and frustrating to have a technical issue like that when you're pressed for time, but it happens.

I wouldn't call it embarrassing, just unfortunate. Cut those two a break, they've been trying really hard to communicate more, but posts like these are just going to push them away. Nobody wants to post on a forum when people are constantly berating them.

Yeah, kind of. If you don't count the fact there's two people going through the checklist, multiple crew checking the outside of a plane as well as inside and the fact lives are in danger thus these checklists are federally mandated by the government.

Yeah, except for those, it's totally like not fully plugging in a laptop.

It was quite embarrassing. I felt a bit better when folks said the info was good during the screw up. Someone kicked the cord and our laptop eats powerif it is unplugged. It's a thousand pound Alienware.

I want to apologize that both demos had to be shortened. We originally had 30 minute slots (stuff happens in live shows and sometimes things get bumped but still - but that snafu won't happen again.) We will do encores of both shows so you guys can get a deeper look.

All-in-all I hope you enjoyed the part of the raid we showed.

I wish I'd taken more pics of the stage. There's one on twitter where Greg is setting up and he is crouching on the stairs that lead to the stage. All presenter laptops went on the floor right there so they could connect to the screens by the couch and the sound booth, or our wire coming out was sad but I don't blame anyone since the laptops are just on the darned floor. That being said, the booth was far bigger and more technical than ever before. I'm proud of how much Twitch has grown!

I am glad I had all my devices in chat so I could talk during the downtime. :)

Neither of us hit the cord. We were sitting already when it happened. We even asked them to check it live but the plug that was loose was in the power brick, not the connection to the laptop, so the crew didn't see it and said we were okay.

    Murphy's Law. :)

I'm not giving you guys grief for it. I slept through the live stream. Painkillers are fun.

Who cares? Is any sane person going to be watching twitch and think themselves, "Herp-derp, dat game must sukk kuz teh powerz on teh laptop went out!"

And it's RIFT so, again, why do any of us care? I don't play games like RIFT.

There are a lot of people on these forums who just need to step away from the computer and re-evaluate their priorities and stop wasting their time.

This thread is not only pointless in a general context but completely unrelated to Defiance.

    Who. Gives. A. ****.

This was a demo on-stage at PAX, right?

So basically, they have 5 minutes to set up after the last folks leave the stage, or something like that, and they have to be able to get in, set up, and get out ASAP because whoever is next is frothing and drooling to get their turn on the stage?

Microsoft having the beta of Windows 95 fail on every single computer at the local computer show, while IBM and Apple were across the hall -- while IBM had an active advertising campaign against the Windows Blue Screen of Death -- that was an embarrassing demo (esp. since they didn't get it resolved until 2 hours before the show ended). Thankfully just an observer on that one.

My standing up before a VP at a bank and demonstrating software, having the voice response unit (the thing you hear when you dial in) suddenly switch to a badly impersonated Hitler, that was a little more embarrassing -- at least to me personally. Having the alpha-test version of the software with me that had unspecified bugs, and having it crash constantly as well throughout the process -- that just made it worse.

Consider the probable audience on that one...

Anyway, the thing is -- you know, in EverQuest Planes of Power, there was a scripted encounter that when you defeated it, crashed the entire shard and rendered whoever had been in the fight unable to log in until the GMs intervened due to a bug. Whole shard. Bam, dead. Because you killed a raid mob normally.

And so there are a lot worse things to happen during a demo. :)

Keep in mind, usually the whole time, you're just going "please, please, PLEASE don't let Global chat go into a Chuck Norris phase while I'm giving this demo."

Damn, some of you act like you've never made a mistake or had something go wrong during an interview or presentation. Wait until you get some more experience under your belt, sometimes no matter how well you prepare things go wrong, it's how calm you stay and and how well you cope with it that counts.

no matter how much time there is to prepare, i am always prone to do pre-combat checks and inspections. during my 6 month long Quick Reaction Force for our sector, my Troop was also tasked with the Crisis Response Team for the entire country of Iraq. even during downtime, we went over checklists, did movement drills, went over failure to fire procedures for weapons(cables unplugged, round jam issues, etc.), and continued to baby the weapons and computers so that in the event of being called up, we were up and out the gate within 7-10 minutes. While as CRT we were never actually activated(thanks to our landowner brothers keeping things under control), as QRF we were spun up on a near daily basis. this included several occasions that included taking indirect fire as we were moving out the gate to go engage the enemy. the point is that, no matter what is thrown in your direction, you continue forward. some might not agree with Greg's decision to mode the game, but i think it was a great on the move decision to do so, in order to get the key points across.

i saw your responses, Elizabeth. the reason why I bring up my military experience, is because the things we do on a daily basis can easily be translated in to the civilian equivalent. Murphy's Law does not apply in the situation with the cord. That was a failure of your support not keeping tabs on the equipment that is supposed to make you successful. Giving an excuse for a failure is akin to one of my soldiers giving me the same for something that could have easily been covered down on. I am in no way scolding, or putting you guys down. I am providing an "after action" comment for improvement. After any sort of training is conducted, even down to every morning physical training, we go through this process. I hope you guys have done the same to keep an incident from occurring again. Do this by using a model of the action action process. Define the issue, create steps to solve it, implement it and then once again go through the AAR process.

one last bit of advice: never, evereverevereverevereverrrrrrr use the acronym "snafu". i don't think you want your community believing that "situation normal - all f$%ked up" is the way you guys conduct business. don't use "fubar", either. both of these apply to situations that are common and require a great deal of talent, action and dedication to get through. if something as simple as an unplugged cord constitutes the "snafu"... i think you can see where i'm going with this.

s&%t does happen, but that doesn't mean you just throw your hands up and say, "ah well, what can ya do."

Here's a pro-tip I've learned from convention shows: TAPE the power cord to the floor so it isn't easy to dislodge AND assign someone to STAND beside the equipment to watch that it doesn't get tampered with, and three have a second PC up and running the game in the unlikely event that the first machine dies.

I think your story telling mode WAS quite good but it doesn't really save the day. When people tune in to SEE a demo, they expect to watch the new game play, not to hear about it. I saw in the chat someone say, it's like when Grandma told us stories. (I don't THINK he was equating YOU with his Grandmother, just that story time was an interesting fallback and reminded him of his childhood.

I thought the stage where the raiders ported to the Plane of Death and the Plane of Life and had to switch focus at just the right time was quite interesting.

Well, you ask why any of us should care. I cared enough to start this thread and Elizabeth cared enough to reply to it. I cared because I'm not only a Defiance player but also a Rift player, and more important a Trion customer. I had hoped that PAX would introduce Trion and thus Defiance and Rift to a broader audience in a favorable way.

For Defiance to do well, Trion needs to do well. If Rift weren't making money, Trion couldn't afford to keep Defiance going.

Now here's Mac's Corollary to Murphy's Law: 'And it will go wrong in the worst possible way at the worst possible time.'
