Looks like I'm not going to have to wait 3 months, GMG has it for 33$ already.

Barely two weeks after release. Whoo, maybe in another two I can get it for 20!

There is no 'behind other players,' in this game - with possibly the exception of not having unlocked access to certain co-op instances. The game entirely caters to both group or solo minded people.

And given how quickly you can advance, as well as the limited amount of content - half the player base is effectively 'done' now, there's nothing for him to rush through.

That would sort of be up to you, wouldn't it?

From everything I've garnered, Ego ranks are just that. A person with 500 Ego and a person with 5 Ego could fight each other, and be evenly matched, at least according to Trion. Sans the experience.

Well they just removed the first episode mission. On that you could have seen where the crystal in the show came from and why they are on the run. You also gets Nolan's rifle which almost got him killed in Pilot. Little things like that. So if you don't about limited content and playing along with the show. Wait.

Don't buy it now. If the reviews get better, maybe pick it up in a few months. I've been playing it since launch and I am not playing it until it gets better.

Unfortunately I agree with this. There are too many bugs at the moment and it doesn't seem like they will be fixed for some time. Also, for the most part this game feels like a single player game that you play with others around you. A late start pretty much won't hurt you at all, other than possibly some of the TV missions which so far weren't that impressive.
