Defiance is pushing GPU over 100C. Anyone NOT tech support know a hack to cool this?

When I speak of limit in terms of processor and GPU I am thinking of how fast the control unit can decode and transfer data to the arithmetic logic unit per second...I only answered that one because that was the only one I felt was a question.

That one, I went a bit off topic, had nothing to do with the Defiance specifically, had to do with Synther's remark about a game, which is software, cannot be blamed for hardware issues. Microsoft alone had BSOD issues in some of their last patches. My point is there, to say software has no effect on how your hardware runs is fallacy.

This game is playable at 640x480 and minimum video card settings (2x,2x, vsync off, all other settings set to max performance).... using a Toshiba laptop from 2006 (model c655d-s5057). Video card is ATI mobility HD 4200.

I have the 3rd degree burns to prove it!

There are two alternatives to the commonly used VSync, although none of them get rid of tearing for good. One however can help in reducing FPS even further.

Double-VSync does a refresh at half your monitor's refresh rate. Using a 60Hz screen would mean you'd get 30FPS or, if the FPS the card is putting out can't keep up, 15, 10, 6, ...

Dynamic VSync means VSync is on for any frame rate that is equal to or larger than your monitor's refresh rate, and is turned off for frame rates that are lower than that. During a lower FPS phase you get tearing again, but your FPS won't be capped at 30, 20, 15, 12, 10 or whatever.


And about the overheating "bugs": These were the ones I mentioned, although I still think users coerced the developers into accepting these issues as bugs when it would have been better to take the cards and beat the card manufacturers round the heads with them.

"No other game does this, so it must be your game that is flawed!", right? Wrong. People would just need to run Furmark for a while to see the same effect. Stress causes heat. Less stress, less heat. Bug fixed, or so they think.

In the case of SC2 and STO Beta though, that could have been avoided had there been a frame limit put into the game. The reports are not of gameplay overheating the system but intro screens running rampant on FPS due to no limitation. Vsync is set to "Use 3d setting" (Nvidia) by default even on ATI catalyst. So that was either development not choosing to or overlooking not having a frame limit. That is no error of the user. Nvidia...my only thought was, who got fired that day?

Is there a difference between a GPU using up all its resources for high frame rates and using up the same resources for "just" a complex scenery? It's load all the same, it doesn't matter what it ends up being used for.

You can limit fps using something like Dxtory (free app), if too much fps is your problem.

You might have all those years of experience sir, I know I do and I can not believe that YOU believe what you stated. There are numerous cases in gaming and non-gaming instances that a particular piece of software will stress hardware to overheating when run, especially within the limitations of a laptop. Your statement is just one possible cause, not the entire litany of possible faults. There is not one set answer to this as you are trying to portray and each incident/issue needs to be diagnosed within a case by case framework. Numerous empirical examples have been mentioned by others and I could add to that list.

That said I do have to agree that in this person's case I strongly believe it's a dust/clogged air path issue causing a temp spike that high combined with the fact that Defiance does push the graphics to certain higher than average levels as witnessed by logging the temps of the Radeon cards in my system.

As for the dust problem I offer the following to our laptop using friend. A few days ago I had the pleasure of disassembling a laptop which had all outward signs of being well cleaned and maintained, & showing all vents clear only to find the heat sink 75% clogged at it's internal intake. For the average person who is not a modder or builder, or such they might think that all is well when there is a hidden problem buried where only a full disassembly can either find or fix it.

On a personal note for you Synther I find your mode of address to inappropriate especially as coming from someone spouting that they have 30+ years experience in teaching computers. When or where does it become appropriate to call someone and Idiot? I have to wonder if you use the same tone in addressing your students as you did here in a forum where people are trying to be helpful, not demeaning or degrading.

You have offered your opinion as have others, be gracious and stop the flaming before it escalates. Or better yet, apologize.

If you are able to consistently poll a frame rate over 60fps, let's say in the department of 100, then your GPU is free to work that much harder. A GPU pegging 99% instead of an average around 60-80% WILL result in more generated heat. This is particular noticeable in multi card setups where they can share the workload and bring down the overall power output.

Depends. I've seen plenty of badly optimized programs that make too many processor calls and ramp up clock cycles unnecessarily. My most recent memory is that of War of the Ring. It was notorious for sending CPU temperatures into the 90s unless you manually reduced the amount of cores it was trying to utilize. The culprit was a nasty string bug that kept barraging the CPU with junk data resulting in 100% core usage.

I have the same problem , and no its not my laptop i have G600 and it was all fine berfore, lowering settings don't give anything , i was the same %Cpu usage even fps dont changed.
