"That other one"... yeah, I see what you did there. ;)
The first game I have ever played in my life was Space Invaders on Atari 2600.
Aside from Space Invaders, my parents owned also Ms. PacMan, Zaxxon and Wizard Of Wor on Atari 2600, the later being my favorite.
The very first farming session I did in my life was on Mystic Quest on the very original Game Boy in order to have the last shield of the game only obtainable in the last level before the final boss. IIRC, it was the Aegis Shield and the level was The Mana Sanctuary (down the Mana Tree).
For me, the best game on the original Game Boy was Zelda Link's Awakening. Period, without a doubt, no questions and hands down.
Still on Game Boy (the real original one), we owned Tetris (never got bored of that game), Super Mario Land 1 & 2 (very good classics), Wario Land (First game as a antihero, loved it), The Spirit Of F1 (not as good as it seemed), Hook (nice, though it could make the Game Boy to have graphical lags), Batman : Return Of The Joker (too short), The Hunt For Red October (very nice, though it has nothing in common with the book or the movie), Mortal Kombat 1 & 2 (Fatality anyone ?), though I had the chance to play many more games thanks to friends.
The first shooter I have played in may life was Doom, on the SNES of one of my cousins. It was the first and last time I played a shooter more than five minutes on a console.
The first game I played on PC was Tomb Raider II. I played it again recently and I have to say that I prefer the most recent Lara Croft, though the original one has some... undeniable arguments.
The first game I bought with my very own money was Half-Life on PC, perhaps a week after release. Before that I was a dangerous cultural terrorist who was playing hacked games. Funny thing about Half Life, I finally managed to defeat the last boss only last year...
I've played Counter-Strike from the first betas and up to the 1.3 version. Also played a little bit Action HL and Team Fortress Classic. At that time I played also Unreal Tournament and, more importantly, Quake 3. Even if I never had the chance to be paid to play Q3, I had a fairly good level... Though I never won any tournament.
I also played Doom on PC. In the classic-FPS-era, I played Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior Classic, Blood, Quake 1 & 2. Never played the very first Wolfenstein, though.
I played the very first GTA perhaps a month after release. And I've never been able to finish it. Never. Also played GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas. I was never tempted by GTA4, though.
On my very first PC (bought in 1998), I also remember playing FIFA98, Civilisation II, Sim City 2000, Need For Speed 3, Moto Racer 2 and Baldur's Gate. There are maybe many more, but I can't remember all of them...
I have played Diablo 2 for God knows how many years and I still play it occasionnaly. I also played a lot to the original Diablo. Never touched Diablo 3, though. Not even with a five feet pole. That game simply doesn't exist for me. The next episode in the Diablo saga are Torchlight 1 & 2. Period.
In 2003, I have bought the Dreamcast of a friend just because of Super Puzzle Fighter II X. Dang that game was funny and entertaining, even in single player.
On Dreamcast, I also played a lot to Crazy Taxi 2, Zombie Revenge, Ready 2 Rumble and Phantasy Star Online, though I was never able to play the latter online. Too bad...
Back on PC, the best RPG I have ever played - I can tell you that it will take a looooooong time before I play a better RPG - the best RPG ever is Neverwinter Nights and its two extensions : Shadows Of Udrentide and Hordes Of The Underdark. I have wasted so many hours of my life on that game and guess what... I don't regret it.
Call To Power 1 & 2, Civilisation 4, Quake 4, UT 2004 & UT3, Temple Of Elemental Evil, Starcraft and Broodwars, Warcraft III and The Frozen Throne, Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2, Deus Ex, Warhammer 40k : Dawn Of War (with its extensions : Winter Assault, Dark Crusade and Soulstorm)... All of these were great games, and I still play some of them occasionnally.
Crap. I was about to forget the Serious Sam franchise... These were pure FPS, man. The First and The Second Encounter in HD are really beautiful, while Serious Sam 3 BFE is even more beautiful than... well some recent AAA games. Not to mention that with this game, you trully learn what is a Horde Mode : 1742 enemies to kill in the last level, before the Boss Zone. Fnck yeah.
More recently, the Mass Effect Trilogy destroyed my whole social life... I'll only mention the multiplayer part of Mass Effect 3 : almost 1500 hours of effective gaming (ie. excluding time spent in lobbies, menus and shop). Knowing that I did 5 complete playthrough in all episodes, that each playthrough was around 50 hours on average, that would mean around 750 hours in total, only for the single player part, thus ~2250 hours in total. Ahem.
The most recent games I played ?
- RAGE : very good game, despite what press said. It may be a little short (around 10h), it's still nice and beautiful...
- Borderlands : very entertaining. I really enjoyed playing that game. I'm currently waiting the second episode in GOTY Edition.
- Darksiders : very disappointed by that game, it should never have left the consoles. Keyboard+Mouse controls are horrible.
- Portal and Portal 2 : Very entertaining, I really recommend those games, even if the first one is really short.
- Half-Life 2, HL2 Episode 1 and HL2 Episode 2 : nice games, though I found them less entertaining much shorter than the first Half Life with Opposing Force and Blue Shift.
- Super Meat Boy is so stupidly good that everyone should play it at least once in his/her life.
- The Witcher and The Witcher 2 : Assassin Of Kings : Holy crap those RPGs are good ! I strongly recommend them to everybody. Even if it's not in open world, the stories are incredibly complex and feature many political/long term aspects. Never seen anything like that in a game, except perhaps a little bit in the ME Trilogy.
The games I'm waiting the most ?
- Borderlands 2 GOTY Edition
- The Witcher 3 : Wild Hunt
- Cyberpunk 2077
- Mass Effect 4
- A Bioshock pack on Steam with the 3 Episodes.
- An hypothetical Unreal Tournament 4
- An hypothetical Half Life 3
And knowing that I still have a sh!tload of games I've bought on Steam and that I have yet to play : Metro 2033, Alan Wake American Nightmare, Sniper Elite : Naz! Zombie Army, Two Worlds, Homefront, Titan's Quest 1 & 2, Nexuiz, Dragon's Lair, Saint's Row 2 & 3, Compagny Of Heroes, and so much more.
COME AT ME BRO !
