Should outfits be purchasable through in game vendors?
Hello everyone, I've been playing Defiance for a while now and have come to realize that the outfits you can earn from quests are rather stale compared to what you can buy from the Defiance store. Problem is, some people like myself don't want to spend around $30 on something that shouldn't really cost so much. That is why I propose that some outfits should be made obtainable through in-game vendors on all platforms (PC, Xbox 360, PS3) for those players who cannot afford these rather interesting choices. Thank you community and I hope that I can get some support for this :)

No, and it's not likely to happen. It would be unfair to all those who bought them, and they're there as a source of revenue since the game has no subscription fee. There's really no basis for complaining that they can't be obtained outside the bit store as they're luxury items that offer no substantive value, they don't cost anywhere near $30 (the most expensive ones are $16.50) and many of the ones you can buy are the exact same mesh as the ones you can get through pursuits that have simply been re-skinned. For example, the Drifter is a re-skin of the Harmony Preacher mesh from the Conquer 101 Keys pursuit, the Liberty Heavy Armor and SPD Heavy Trooper are re-skins of the EMC Heavy Trooper mesh from the Sack Scrapworks pursuit, and the Ekaru Predator and Collective Predator are re-skins of the Ark Predator mesh from the Ego Evolution pursuit.

I think Deunan hit it on the head. The Defiance Store is how they worked around having subscription fees. You pay real money for luxury items. It makes sense, allowing you to play for free if you want to, but still allowing Trion to get a source of income beyond game sales. I'd like to see new outfits that aren't in the Defiance Store and are bought for scrip from the vendors, but I just don't see it actually happening.

I don't know many people that can argue that spending $5 on an uncustomizable re-colored piece of existing headgear in a game that skews heavily towards default models when viewing other players is a sensible business model, much less a "competitive" one.

Unfortunately, several poorly thought out decisions in the past heavily imply that there is no longer a resident economist on the Defiance team. :(

There SHOULD be more outfit options for sale in game, and ALL the Defiance store items NEED to be lowered in price. However most of the sane people have been stating that since launch and nothing has come of it. Occasionally their is a sale in the Defiance store on certain vehicles and outfits but that's all.

Just the new ones who think plenty of people actually buy that shtako. If the prices were lowered, more people would buy them. I mean Borderlands 2 sales outfits for real money, but it comes with BOTH parts of the outfit and is ONLY 1$. I am on a limited budget but I have no problem with spending 1$ on a complete outfit, witch by the way is totally different than any of the ingame outfits earned or bought as specials.

Their should be randomly placed outfits in some vendors and once someone buys it its gone.

Starter outfits? sure. Other outfits? not the ones in the bits store. But there should be some in new vendors or as vendor specials that can only be purchased with scrip. Or drops from specific mobs. Like a raider outfit from raiders or a dark matter outfit from the dark matter. Or even unique outfits from bosses that are super rare. Borderlands did the outfits the right way where it's a drop/vendor item and there's a purchasable one and then there's the ones you earn as rewards. Defiance should take a long look at the borderlands franchise and realize where they went wrong with Defiance and try to emulate some of the features that have worked out so very well.

    Well said, kind sir!

Makes me laugh when people use the word "unfair" when it comes to having a sale... because, you know, sales of any kind on a retail item just NEVER happens in this world. I'm sorry, but none of those outfit prices in the store should be above $5.

well im glad they used outfits instead of subscription fees, though ive noticed that games with fees have waaaaay more content and get hotfixes/patches way sooner so if they did have a subscription it couldnt be more than $7-$8 a month from shear lack of real mmo content. i honestly dont believe a sub fee could ever be justified for defiance

That's actually turned out to be false. Several games have gone to Free to play with add on content purchased through an in-game store and done very well.

Turbine has stated categorically that LoTRO has made far more money since it went F2P and introduced the LoTRO store. They have done so well that they're now releasing their fifth major expansion to the game. That was after the game struggled for a couple of years after the initial launch had gone well.

While the current market and pricing on the Defiance store may not be balanced correctly, it is quite possible with some tuning and more content the game can do quite well.

As someone who paid $50 more for Defiance than a new player does, this is where I stopped reading.

Quite ironic that the poster saying it'd be unfair probably only paid $10 for the game ;)

It would be nice if there were outfits to buy on vendors, different outfits than from the game store of course. Wouldn't screw anyone who's bought outfits and something to buy besides weapons and such.

Just wanted to ask also, and didn't see the point of a new thread, is there some setting I'm missing on the PC version that stops everyone from looking the same? Is this a bug or "feature"?

It really sucks to get an outfit and know that you look like a bald, parka wearing human male to everyone. Makes you wonder what the point is of even buying an outfit.

It's by design. The developers put it in to make the game more stable for game console players since their platforms are extremely limited in terms of RAM. Not a particularly insightful move on their part and not something they have any concrete intentions of fixing in the foreseeable future.

Honestly I would very much like to see this fixed. I would like to experience Arkfalls on PC just like the promo vids, with each Arc-Hunter with their own style of clothing going all in for the kill. EMC troopers, Raider dressed, Custom heal/torso dressed individuals. Would give more life to the game than "Attack of the Clones". :p

They supposedly did say they will eventually address this when they explained why it was occurring but like I said, no concrete plans in the foreseeable future.
