They are both good all-purpose choices, but other guns do have their uses.
Your play style is part of that too...I used to be running around constantly, and getting right in the mobs faces, but now I am trying to get better at sniping; That's a whole different play style for me.
BMGs are another route that people may take and can net you good points in at arkfalls and Sieges (from what I hear.)
As for changes, I heard legends of a shotgun nerf that's before my time, and a previous patch did adjust the SAW damage output down a bit to put it more in line with other assault weapons; So the Thunder is supposed to be a viable alt, but I still prefer the fire rate of a SAW!
Adjustments were made in the latest patch to mods that get rolled when you receive a new weapon. I don't believe this changes to weapons you already own.*
