Agreed, what to sell bits, then offer something that players want but can only buy with bits.
For example:
Bit only lock boxes that drop orange weapons [or at least more arkforge] with the perks that most players are seeking. Instead of lockboxes that drop the same old trash that can be purchased with in game currency/keys.
IMO, there should be 2 type of lockboxes. The "free" lockboxes that can be purchased in game. As they are "free" players get to roll the RNG and hope they get decent gear. The second lockbox is one purchased with bits. IMO, there should never be anything less then purple in those lockboxes. Other wise, why should a player waste real life money to buy items he can buy in game for "free"?
I used to purchase inventory slots, outfits, vehicles from the store. But I've gotten everything I wanted to buy.
But add lockboxes that offer more then the junk that I can get ingame for "free", and I just might start buying again.
The problem is with the lockbox suggestion, is that as soon as you do that, you cross the line into Pay to Win.
Now, in a game that does not have weapon progression, as Defiance did originally, your suggestion would be valid and it wouldn't be pay to win because you are simply getting a specific weapon color with specific rolls that you want. The weapon itself isn't making you any stronger than someone without it. However, now that they have added weapon progression in the game, you cannot offer anything better in the store than you can get in game only because that is the definition of Pay to Win.
I bought a boat load of Epic Mod boxes back in the day. They weren't always available, but I stocked up when they were. It seemed like I got nothing but rocket launcher mods and Guerilla buttstocks...I still have a bunch of them. I just figured that was the price you paid for the chance at good stuff.
THEN they went 'free' in the vendor boxes. I was ticked. Oh well. Now mods are about useless and I don't buy anything with RL.
So they shot themselves in the foot, in other words. Then the design team needs to crank out new things that players would want to spend money on.
Kinda like what they did in Rift with the beachware and "fancy" outfits. Maybe add "housing" and decorations that players would spend bits on to buy. But I dunno if people would want to come over to my beach front house and toss a Pow on the barbie and exchange war stories.
Do they make more money selling stuff in the cash shop as apposed to having a monthly fee?
Ugh, that sucks. I get an awful lot of rocket launcher mods from that epic cache also, as well as infector mods. Two weapon types I never use...
That's exactly what should happen. The dimensions idea sounds fair, but I am not sure it really fits with the theme of the game. In truth, I am not entirely sure what Trion should add, but currently, there's nothing I feel like spending Bits on. I don't care about outfits and things like that, and at high EGO, the boosts mean very little (I do buy the occasional rep boost, though).
To tie into the poor value proposition I talked about in the original post, just take a look at Patron Pass. It's $10/mo, and offers almost nothing to the high-EGO player, and modest gains to newer players. Whenever I use one of the daily chests and get an XP boost, I shake my head. If *anything*, I want rep boosts, but I am sure not going to sub for $10/mo to have a 1/5th chance of that happening on any given day. I'd rather just buy a rep boost and rep boost+ once a week, if anything.
I am still blown away at the fact that the $100 VBI pack includes a mere 50 Arkforge, no Bits, and no DLC. It's mind-boggling.
There's a reason so many MMOs go the free-to-play route. I know once Rift did, profits immediately increased. I think that while many players don't actually end up spending anything, there are those serious players who end up spending *way* more than the cost of a subscription fee. Then there's the fact that a lot of these games still have subscription fees. I have an active one with Rift, because what it gives me is actually worth it.
That article was just AWESOME , It said all the things i dont have the time or patience to type out while im here at work and also without adding in my personal discontent. I just want to add....
You cant FORCE people into the bits store , Give us cool things we want at reasonable prices and we will buy.
But first you have to STOP WITH THE CHANGES NOONE WANTS in order to make us happy again or you get nowhere.
Everyone at TRION should read that article , I believe about 80% of the playerbase would agree with everything said in that article.
Loved the article, I agree with bigguy Trion as a whole needs to read this article at this very moment! In fact it should be REQUIRED for them to read at this point before they continue with anymore bad decisions!
Oh my God, this link you posted hits the nail square on the head. Thumbs WAY UP OP!!! Thanks for this!!!
That article should be required daily reading at the Trion offices. Is there hope that they will heed anyone's advice?
Nice article and I agree with everything in it. That guy you quoted seems really smart. And handsome. And successful. And I bet he has awesome taste in music and a smoking hot wife too. He pretty much seems like the greatest :D
If they would sell 2000 AF for $10 they would probably sell out in an hour (kidding of course they can't sell out). But $20 for 500 AF lol. They obviously need money for the crack they are smoking.
This article states what everyone has been so upset about this game is upset about. Its why new players dont stick around (the cost, unprofessional staff, and horrible game play experience).
Trion's miss management is running this game into the ground by destroying its veteran base and making it so that new players dont want to play because to get anything it will cost a ton of real life money with little chance of it actually paying off.
There are successful models out there and yet Trion wants to do their own thing.
Good article, thank you for posting it. I do agree with everything in it as well. The community team seems pretty active on the forums and such, but they do get all the rage about the game directed at them just because they are here. That being said, it does seem like the over all decisions on where the game is going seems to be getting worse with each new patch/nerf. Each patch is followed by several other patches, to adjust the first patch. It feels like nothing is very well thought through.
I want to say that some of the previous posts in this thread I also found myself nodding in mutual thinking. The items in the bit store are in no way unique, and therefore seemingly useless. Reskinned clothing, and other things feel hardly worth spending real cash on. People tend to collect things that have different looks, not just different colors.
If they want people to spend more money in the bit store, then they need to offer unique items, or a variety of clothing not found in the game. Not just the same clothing model, and slap a different paint job on it. Give us a reason to buy something, and you'll find people spending money.
As it was, I had bought 1300 bits after the game launched. I bought 2 or 3 things, but yet to find anything of real interest to spend them on, so why would I buy more?
Cant play my character on EU server, is it normal? I didnt find any info about current server status.
PLAY button has gone..
They just need non-combat anything. Right now the only non-combat activity is the challenge races.
It's easy to get burned out on a game when all you can do is shoot at different stuff in a handful of different ways. I mean, this game doesn't even have any puzzles, mini-games, crafting, social places, market place, ANYTHING that could be considered a "down time" activity.
They haven't even given us PCers a friggin' walk key yet.
There's no variety.
I still don't get it. The player base has been TELLING them since game INCEPTION, there is a way they could make money, that they seem COMPLETELY unwilling to even entertain.
Why is there not more vanity item production? At least 60 percent of the outfits and headgear have been there from the beginning. The community has been asking for more items such as this but all they seem to produce is reskinned junk.
I'd venture to say they lost a lot of revenue when they got rid of the ability to keep purchasing inventory space (I have to admit, when I ran out of space, I'd go buy more slots, now I'm stuck at 797). But this apparently caused performance issues (why not address those issues?).
So many people had so many suggestions over the past that went unheard. Why would they start listening now.
I's their game.
They do what they want.

That's every MMO. Games like WoW and ToR struggle so hard with the idea that people want to do more than kill things, but in a genre where the gear grind is the ultimate goal, it ends up being the only thing you do.
Yes though, this game has the least amount of non-action and social options out of all the MMOs I've played.
Lack of anything non combat related is one of the main issues that trion should have been working on for a long time in terms of content. Also the lack of land expansion, instead crowding new content onto a already crowded map (incursions in san fran, or mount tam being prime examples).
The fact that bugs and issues that have plagued the game from release, are still to be fixed, or in some cases have actually been made Worse, is another reason that trion should spend alittle less time tweaking the in game economy, and alittle more time fixing the game. Economy will take care of itself if they fix the game in my opinion.
Then again, as has been said on so many threads (and this one), expecting trion to actually listen to anything other than their own accountants is like hoping for world peace... Very honourable and a nice thing to do, but Never gonna happen till something fundamental changes.
Love the article, love the game, hate the direction they wish to take it. I will stick around as long as I have friends on here, but as soon as the last of them leave, I shall be heading to greener pastures.
We were talking about this in clan earlier, it's not rocket science Trion, give the people what they want and they will buy it. Obviously for a reasonable price.
First off, for people who want non-combat anything: This is not the game for you. It's just not. Sorry. (This is coming from someone with all Time Trial-related pursuits completed.) And it does have a moderate, gambling-based "crafting" system.
Firefall sucks. Period. Patterning anything at all after the way Firefall does anything is moronic. That game took out PVP because their developers couldn't handle it.
And for people who want Trion, or anyone else, to sell more power in the form of Arkforge, guns, you name it: What's wrong with you? The prices are obviously high to fleece stupid people, but that's exactly what stupid people deserve. If Trion wants to go whale hunting on idiots, that's fine. I bought all I needed so far with 50 bucks (DLC pack, inv slots, keycode slots). Sheep who buy short-term stuff like lockboxes and Arkforge with real-world money deserve to be sheared.
But encouraging even more people to pay to win? This game is already P2W enough as it is with the DLC.
Maybe I'm just from a different generation. When I'm from, the idea that you could pay extra money to have extra power in any game, anywhere, would get you lynched.
Yeah. Imagine what would have happened if games like Super Mario had DLC?

stop attacking the game for trying to make money, they arent running a charity.
they want a better game as much as every other player and they know what people want, it just takes longer than writing a couple of posts on the forum.
One more note to the people who think that they could sell more Arkforge if they lowered its drop rate: Do you have any idea what you're asking for? Making something vital rarer so that people have to buy it instead of earn it in-game? Are you actually arguing for this in seriousness, or are you working for Firefall or Destiny? The sheer backlash would be devastating to the playerbase. Trion's name would go right up there with EA's. "We wanted to sell more stuff, so we made it harder to get." Why, how could an average video game playerbase possibly react negatively?
The beauty of the current system is that while you can buy things, you don't really have to (apart from what I paid, which I consider the actual game's price; 35 inv slots and 50 keycode slots is just "this is the trial version of your character").
Fishae, respectfully, you might want to read a few of the thousands of posts from the last 16 months before you make such a declaration. I say this with no malice or hate whatsoever.
The comparison had to do with the value proposition of the $100 packs. It doesn't matter what Firefall itself is like.
I haven't seen a single instance of someone being in favor of the game going the pay-to-win route. As it is, Trion overprices many things in the store, and like real-world product, that means there's less people buying. I am not entirely sure how this game could be pay-to-win anyway; it's not that competitive (and it's not hard to get an "epic" weapon for PvP).
I've been playing MMOs since 2002, so I'm with you in not wanting to see a game go pay-to-win. It's happened already to a couple of my favorites, and it really does skew things sometimes (I'm looking at you, Lineage II).
Players are TRYING to spend money - the problem is that Trion isn't giving players much value.
i know what you mean, but i dont think the devs sit there every morning thinking "hmmm, how do i make players hate the game more" instead of "hmmm, how do i make the game better"
they arent keeping up with their promises etc but that doesnt mean any of these complaining helps
say it takes roughly 3hrs to get 500 arkforge, i dont see how 20 dollars is unreasonable at all.
the DLCs are worth like 2-3 costumes in other mmos and you get a lot more than just fancy looks you get bored with in a week
So if trion is whale hunting for profit, does that mean they are a Japanese company?
