Defiance Data Community: Clans (Brainstorm)

I always have projects on the go, very few of us doing that these days for Defiance. My latest one is the listing of clans as a DB on DD. This is primarily for the purpose of recruitment and having an index of clans by platform and region, with a little information to help guide people towards them.

Apart from this purpose, what features do you folks think would be valuable.

CURRENTLY:

- create a clan, must be named unique for a platform and region.
- view a clan

PLANNED:

- filter clans by region
- filter clans by platform
- filter clans by recruitment flag
- search for clan by name

POTENTIAL:

- clan leaders can create news articles for their clan (public)
- clan leaders can create events for their clan (public)
- all events are shown on an events calendar for the game
- clan leaders can create discussions for their clan (public)
- clans can have a shoutbox or chat channel
- you must apply to be in a clan and accepted in order to access clan news / events / discussions / shoutbox

Any from the potential list that are important or have any feedback on the concept? should my energy be focused elsewhere? Let me know what you think.

I think it's a brilliant idea.

My clan is all but dead since the changes, so it may be a way of injecting new life into it.

...or if that fails, a place for me to window shop for a new clan...

Great idea maybe some play styles filters like hardcore, weekend warriors, role playing, and ect.. Also maybe a filter for member count and when the clan was founded

If anyone wants to play along at home they can create a clan and leave messages as I add features.

Yup I can see it on the index. Adding clan members requires a decision to be made on a feature.

Should we go through the route of having people register / apply / be granted permission and all clan content be locked behind a login system?

Or can we be open and have this all public and only officers have to be added to the clan so that they can make edits?

I think people individually registering would be the way to go - it would be a better indicator of who is still actually active in the clan, instead of copy/pasting a bunch of defunct members.

My clan for instance, is technically large, but the amount of actual active members at the moment is a bit pitiful.

My hesitation is that a login screen is a barrier to entry, in fact I rarely even visit my clan website and forums. For clans that have their own online presence I'm not sure there would be enough need to have individual members sign up on a separate site.

- The only confirmed feature at the moment is the clan index, as an aid to clan recruitment.
- The next logical step is to allow clans to create events, all flagged as public, allowing for a server wide calendar of events (regular events can aid in recruitment)

Having private events then requires users to sign in to the site, and requires some consideration about the extra barriers. I am more than happy to provide functionality for clans who don't already run websites and forums however.

Good point. Well, I have a good idea of who's active in our clan, so if you opt for the add member route, I'd be pretty confident I could add members and it would be fairly current. Thing is, I'm not an officer, so I should maybe chat to one of the regulars about checking out DD.

I think it might be a good idea to add Clan Rating to the fields as well. Some people might want to help build something while others might want to just jump aboard the biggest train they can find. I like the suggestions made so far and love what you're doing on DD. It could certainly help build up the rosters for some of us near-soloists... lol
