Defiance MMO Suffers, TV Series Thrives
Its hard for me to take articles like this seriously when I read..
Quote:
Defiance game would survive easily survive even if the TV series suffered by months down the line it appears the opposite is more likely.
Yea, I would have liked to read some of his reasoning. That was the shortest article I think I have ever read. I have made forum posts with more content and referencing than I read in that little blurb. Tricks quote was funny though. I wonder if he even watches the show? The game and show are most certainly not on the same page, that's for sure.
Yeah, it was a pretty short article, but it was the first murmur of things not being kosher from an outside source...
Other people are starting to notice in the gaming world.
I was talking more about the typo. I have terrible grammar and make many typos but someone who writes articles should take it seriously if they want me to take it seriously. If Trick actually said "Defiance game would survive easily survive" then I take back what I said.
Modern journalism is terrible.
The only thing that would make that article more "to standard" is a "click here to see what happened next". Journalists need to go get an education.
"...after months on the free-to-play market, one of the entertainment mediums is struggling."
I'm curious what they base this statement upon. Does this site have knowledge of the profits this game is making? That would be the bottom line indicator. Population would affect it in a sense causing the game to "struggle," but if the game is making enough profit to maintain servers and then some I don't see how anyone can claim it's struggling.
If anything he sounds like a disgruntled gamer that has put some time in on this title.
have to agree a little. anything that i find negative about the game i take with a minor grain of salt due to the ignerince of gamers now aday that dont know anything about the markit let alone how the game its self is oparating. he dosnet have any facts other then a single statment that was made well over a year ago. this leads me to conclude that this guy is just puting out bad press to put it out there
over all i dont see this game failing right now there is an over abundince of players on the PC version and if thay can get the F2P on Xbox going sometime this mounth then we will see a boost in players there hopefuly. over all what is the worse that can happen at this point ?
the way i see it even if trion was to lose microsoft and sony. the game alone and the show would still keep going on. this is a Free to play game. unless someone in the company says " lets just shut her down we arnt makeing enough money to run the servers " then the game will die. but as i see it with the amount of player base that enjoy the free to play market this game has alot of people that can and will at some point play it. be it for a short time or a long time. and with the consdent changes that are still being added into the game there is still alot of stuff to finsih adding
unless aftermath turns out to be a gient flop witch i dont beleave it will . its next to the most content we have seen in over 2 years. this game still has alot to offer most if not all of the real fan base. even noobies have alot to look forword too.
so over all the guy in the article is eather talking out his neck. or has someone on the inside leeking info to him about the state of the game. witch is posabule but also not plosabul.
over all. what makes the article most unworthy of being note worthy is its shortness. if someone was going to realy descuse the world of mmos and defiance thay would of torn into it more given more info and revealed alot more to it. thay would of had a page regarding everything that was wrong with the game and makeing it go under. insted of well the short paragraph that it was.
but this may just be the super fan in me talking. so. over all. ill be here till the game dies. probaly be the last one on the server too when it dies. siting there till the last moment holding on for dear life playing the last ark fall ill ever see in the last moments of the games demise enjoying the blood of my enamys and saying goodbye to my team and clans and friends. hell ill be there till the lights are off and the servers go dark. and you know what. :) my toon will live on even after that in the hearts of all my friends :D
Yip, time will tell.
I do agree that internet journalism sometimes seems like it's written by high-schoolers and shouldn't be taken as law.
We'll have to see if any other more reputable sites jump into it!
most online blogs and aritcels are writen by highschoolers crazy o.o who do you think makes up over helf of the gameing world.
imo 70% of gamers are under 18 the other 30% are over 18 thats my estament. o.o so it wouldnt saprise me if people makeing online posts like that are still in high school and are just raging becuse the game was not there cup of tea,
but who knows. could of been a 10 yearold with realy good grammer and a high iq level >.> only seen one of them in ages and he was on AGT and played the piano
You can see the staff that makes up mmoatk.com on this link: MMO Attack About Page
This supposedly is the writer in question, Blaine Smith: http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/c5fdb...20&d=retro&r=x
beindled you killed the fun lol
The article this "article" is quoting is from polygon which states that Trick stated that the game can survive without the show, but now that the show has been renewed for another season it "does not have to face that proposition."
The polygon article doesn't state in anyway the game being in a bad state, suffering, or not going to last or anything negative.
The poster of this linked article is just stating their opinion wrapped around a neutral article from another site and nothing more.
it was popular?Quote:

I've been meaning to write about this for a long time: what made me pay attention to Defiance was a review written by Kevin VanOrd, on GameSpot, years ago. Usually, people love or hate Kevin for what he says, but I've found the guy to be pretty reasonable in over more than 10 years I've been reading his articles. I tend to trust his opiniions, because they are similar to mine, if nothing else.
I remember vividly that he said "Defiance has a lot of bugs, but if you can get past that, it can be pretty fun". To this day, his words are still true!
I think the reason I cope with Defiance's problems is because I'm a longtime Bethesda fan -- and those games are full of bugs, and those bugs are also more prevalent on the PS3 (to the point Skyrim's DLCs almost didn't make it into the PS3, and even so, they only came out almost an year after the XBOX 360 versions), which I use to play.
I'm not excusing Trion's responsibiilities here. I consider myself a new player, even though I'm EGO 5300, I only started playing Defiance in the last 6 months. In this short time, I saw minorities, lock keepers, encryptions, disconnects, hard-freezes, lags and a lot of other bad things. But I also saw the game improving in many, many ways (especially after Rashere's changes - the jackpot, the Lockbox fine tunnings with Epic drops and removal of unwanted weapons, the reduction in Arkforge cost, better stability and several other tiny improvements that make for an overall better experience), and lately, after it went F2P on the PS3, it's really crowded. I consider the balance is improving towards "excellence", not the other way around, as soon as they can finally figure out how to make the game 99% stable (it's impossible to reach even that, but one can hope). After Silicon Valley, I'm cautiously excited about the future, but I must say I already got from this game much more than I paid for. It's the only game I play in an almost daily basis.
So, as someone said in this thread, I've just written a post longer than the undeniably poorly written "article" in question, that really hurts people who are at least trying to make good on the promise of an excellent game, offering no hard-based facts or knowledge about the issue. Really sad.
Perhaps CM Kiwibird could address the above article directly, I don't know. It feels unfair to leave that piece of shtako as it "owns" the only opinion about Defiance in the internet. Anyone that has a grudge against the game *and* is not reasonable will rally alongside the "article", without giving any facts about it.
You are very wrong in that view most MMO gamers are over 18 only about 25% are Teens and only about 20% are under 18.

im guessing that you dont know what IMO stands for. but thats fine. i love it when people feed me facts and over all feed me :)
in truth even your veiw and " link " are off. if you pay attention to the real gameing world spaning the world. in the us alone the ammount of children playing games is little over 45% of them, this is not proven but this is a statistic that has been flouting around for some time now if you can find it. as for adult gamers if you look at the age that most of us grew up in it is not hard to beleave that we the children of the 90s and 80s are the main group of gamers out there. seeing as we grew up in an age when tech was starting to bloom into something good. most of us started gaming on the old NES and SNES back when thy first game out. and some even sooner then that in arcades and on the atari
ya major throw back there. atari man i feel old sometimes. anyway. its true that there is a large population of adult gamers but at the same time you have to account for ammount of time played in any age range. children below 10 do not game as much as children above 10 and to 18 becuse of there parents controling there habbits better. but the children above 10 play more hours then most adults do becuse thy have more free time then an avarage adult does.
parents are spending time takeing care of there kids and working jobs to pay bills and take care of the household. over all a resposnabul adult gamer unless there some rich kid that got everything from mommy and daddy worbucks then there only gameing a few hours on there days off and spending the rest of the time with there better helf and or children.
but then you have to account for the NEETS and freaks and geeks that have no lifes outside of the 4 walls that is there bed room in there mothers basment or there best friends house. who spend over 8-10 hours gameing aday (( i fall into this catagory sadly )) to truly brake it down.
45% are children under the age of 18 playing for 3-8 hours a day.
15-20% are adults with kids playin 2-5 hours on days off when there not busy doing other things. or playing 1-2 hours a night when there just off work.
another 15-25% is the neets of the world peoiple that have no lifes and play games day in and day out with nothing better to do.
the last % is people that dont game at all.
ALL of this is my own take on the gameing world. it is MY opinion. and how i divers the gameing world out.
but thank you for giveing me something new to read. i was bored today and have nothing to realy do due to heavy lag in the servers. (( think its another Ddos or someone forgot to put the hampster back on its wheel when thy did maintnace on the servers the other day ))
edit 1: also like to note that he only servayed Over the past 5 years, over 35,000 MMORPG players through online surveys , this means he did not servay EVERY gamer out there so his figures are off by ALOT o.o just so you know. 35k does not make up the worlds population of gamers. thats only about gaaa my math is bad on this but ima say aboutr 10% of the gameing world. it might even be lower then that. so over all his figures are way off chart and are higher then thy realy are. or should be.
edit 2: almost forgot . something else the person iun your artical forgot to account for is that children under the age of 12 are less likely to fill out a servay. let alone understand one. and not all children under 12 are gamers on PC there handheld gamers and consol players. AND . the number he used for the ammount of people he servayed. as a small side note. is less then the population of the town i reside in. witch is only 46,000 people. o.o so figure the math to that out. he servayed a small city. he didnt servay a large one say like LA size population. and he only did it over a 5 year time. that shows that in the 5 years he did his servay and calculating and everything that he faield to calculate in the facters of world population country populations and didnt servay enouh people in a 5 year time to get proper numbers to acuritly calculate out his therum. if he wanted to get his numbers right.
he would of servayed over 500,000 to even 10,000,000 people that would of given him more numbers to work with and given him over all better results IMO o.o
Why does nobody ever mention the Magnavox odyssey?! It was my first system and it came before Atari, not by long, but it was still first.
http://gamester81.com/history-of-con...navox-odyssey/
Other than you not mentioning the odyssey, I agree with you, even though I am not sure about the actual statistics either.
well bats thats becuse i wasent born in the 70s lol my mother might remeber it though. i was born in the mid 80s my self. so i had atari, NES, SNES, Famicom, Super famicom, Saga, saga cd , saga satern, dreamcast, gameboy, gameboy color, gameboy advance, N64, playstation, Xbox, gamecube, Ect, lol i grew up with them all,
i still even know the code of doom for konomi muahaha ^ ^ v v < > < > B A B A select start. still works on almost all konome games too o.o even now aday. its become an easter egg in them of sorts hehe.
as for my numbers ya . there hella off i know it. o.o i look at them even now and want to ajust them a little higher then thy are. due to knowing from personal exsperiance just how big the gameing world is.
ya it brings back alot of my past times gameing mmmm sweet childhood. when i didnt have to work. didnt have to worry about money and could play all day over at my firends house when i wanted. back when gameing was not about what gear you had buit about how good you where with a D pad :D man. i remeber the days of 25 cent arcade games. and standing there with a roll of quorters pluging away at a shooter with the foot lever to duck behind cover. or even older. contra. galaga. side scroller top down space shooters. with side to side and forword and backword joystick movements. oh and metal slugs >.< even pinball. lol
man. the age of gameing has changed alot sence back then. i do miss the good old days of old school gameing. when u could play a hole game for 25 cents. and as long as u didnt die. you never had to give up the joysticks
Oh indeed I know what IMO means it means Nothing.
A view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.
Opinion with out any facts to back it is completely irrelevant.
You can spout what you think all you want but until you can back it up it is just noise.

http://www.theesa.com/facts/pdfs/ESA_EF_2013.pdf
the only problum with the articals your showing . is there not reputabel peoples whos names mean anything in the gameing world to me. and from the looks of most of them there only doing minor %s of population and still have there numbers farly wrong.
but then agine to each there own. you beleave thes peoples theroys but befor thy even started there thorys thy where just words comeing out of someones head onto a screen just as mine are. i base mine off my own time playing games over the past 25 years of my life. fyi im 29. if you payed attention to other posts iv been gameing sence i was 4. iv been gameing with others sence the first text based MUDs appeared IIRC games Text based browser games. multi player linix Text based games. Ect. the people that you keep linking are talking modern MMOS there not going back as far as i am let alone going off there own exsperiances. there going off servays that aim for serten dimagraphics.
servays that younger players will ignore. and not do. servays that anyone under the age of 18 could care less about unless there geting something for it. there also not doing there studys for vary long only one of them did it for more then 5 years and he in the end did not even scratch the serfice of the gameing world. gameing is much wider then just MMOS gameing incumpases ALL games. RP, scifi. fantasy. 2d 3d FPS TPS MMO MMORPG. MMOFPS, single player shooters. single player RPGs. single player sicfies. ECT. the lists go on and on and on. your only showing stuff for a single range of gameing.
stuff also that is outdated. as well. we are in 2014 going into 2015 . there data has changed in the past 2-5 years. and the numbers have gone up as more children reach an age where they can game the gamer world exspands. more and more. and children are also gameing younger and younger. i think the youngest player i gamed beside was an 8 yearold out of russia he happend to be in a rival clan and was one hell of a pro sniper. but i degress.
heres a thought. insted of relying on someone elses data/ideas. come up with your own ideas/data. after all.
" not everything you read on the web is true "
The fact you have no Idea Who Nick Yee is proves how little you know.
http://eorzeareborn.com/greying-of-the-mm/
http://www.theesa.com/facts/
lol the fact that i dont know who he is, is becuse he has done nothing worth notice in the gameing world that, i my self have cared to take note of.
you seem to think that for some reason not knowing a none note worthy ubesoft employee seems to matter. true the guys got a higher education then most here. but beyond his study of only 40,000 people ever servayed. he has done nothing that i find note worthy at all.
i wouldn't be saprised if a matter of fact not that many people realy know who he is. at all. sure he has been published in the NY times but seeing as i dont read that paper let alone any i probaly would of never seen anything writen by him same with the wall street jernal and a few other high end magazines that not every one in the gameing world let alone someone like me is ever going to read due to it not being realy game realted publishers.
but i do enjoy looking over your links laughing at how there not encompassing more then just the MMORPG genre of gameing and how there also not vary real gameing statistics but small data collection statistics set around the MMORPG genre instead of ALL genres witch is what iv been talking about.
where as i admit my math is off thes people beleave 100% that theres is right when not all of it is. gamers ,like i keep saying are not limited to one dimagraphic of game. one genre. they are not limited to just MMORPGS the numbers are off becuse there only targeting MMORPGS when thy should be incumpasing ALL games and ganras. but hay
" not everything you read on the net is true "
understand. everything your showing everything your posting .started out as an idea inside someones head. something that ment nothing to anyone but them when it was created and brought forth into the world of the net. a simple creation of someone elses mind. just as my own ideas come forth from my own. my data may be lacking in some aspects but over all. im going off real world exsperiances. while your refrancing people and not comeing up with your own ideas and outlooks on your own. witch is all well and good. but im still going to be stuborn and say that there data is flawed.
to keep from violating the COC i had to cut this short here. i had gone on to state along the lines of " come up with your own idea and stop useing other peoples " <== that being the short verson of it. seeing as my wording became a little hmmm drawn out and could of been misconstrun as me being hmmm mean or rude. i desided to cut it down. and finish with this
while you have given data that has been gathered by others. i have given pure thought of my own. ideas and ideals and theoy, that i have lived for over 29 years of life. things i have seen and done and lived though. personal exsperiance in its self. that is data enough for me. and for some others. becuse thy see where i am comeing from with my own data and have lived the same data i have. and seen the same things i have.
to use other peoples data . is well lacking of real ideas and real conviction tords a beleafe it shows yes that you can do research but it is not your words. your thoughts your true idea alone. and i can respect someone that has a brillent mind but i cant respect someone that dosent use it.
i could throw up links and articles and make pie charts and bar graphs and line graphs all showing data that i have found and can research as well. but in the end. it means nothing to me. becuse it was researched. it was someone elses findings. and it ment nothing to me becuse i didnt make it my self or hmmm do it my self. i relyed on someone elses infermation someone elses research and descoverys to create an idea that was never realy my own but someone elses. to begin with. and to me that is. hmmm
depressing. origanality is the steping stone of any real descovery. we would not have the theoy of relativeity if einstein had not come up with it one day. we would not have the understanding of gravity if Isaac Newton had not come up with the idea on his own. all good theorys come from somewhere. a single thought. a simple idea. an apple falling out of a tree onto someones head. (( belave that was disproved but still ))
and that is all i am puting out there. my own theorys. you can keep throwing out other peoples data. other peoples ideas . other peoples theorys. thats fine. it shows ur good at research. and finding things on google. but haveing an origanel idea.
that alone. is something i can respect alot more then i do right now.
no hard feelings. , and this is my last post on this thread. iv derailed it long enough with my own ideals. and theorys
ahhhh, the arcade next to the skate rink.... I'M NOT OLD!

And that explains your lack of knowledge and credibility you do not read any real News or Magazines of any real intellectual basis so your right your opinion means nothing.
Forming your own thoughts and opinions is not about pulling ideas out of your azz but about reading and using real knowledge from those that have done the work. Nick Yee is an expert on demographics not just game demographics his studies are some of the best in the industry. The entertainment association also supports his findings and publish their own info based on the sales demographics they collect.
So claim the experts are wrong all you want and keep believing what you want but that is not Knowledge nor is it standing on your own ideas it is lack of knowledge and ability to learn.
sigh :: you realy are a vary sad sad person. but thats fine. this is twice i broke my word. and have been made a lier ,
ill start small.
use the enter key.
no one enjoys reading a wall of text no matter how neat the grammer is.
secend. i could simply sit here and rip into you and destory every single thing you just said with paragraph after paragraph of theory and words. and ideals. and ideas. and truths.
but ill do it in a as little of a post as i can so i dont make you read anymore of my . " unegacated knowledge "
i feel sorry for you. and im sorry that you can not come up with an origanel idea of your own or an origanel theory of your own. im sorry that i a simple minded gamer with an IQ of over 200 have waisted your time. and made you resort to calling me stupid and ignerent. becuse i dont know about a single none note worthy person that means nothing to a person that dosent bother reading news papers from a place that is no wear near wear thy live.
just call me a red neck bumpkin becuse boy howdy. i must be unegamacated becuse i dont waist my life reading stuff that is meaningless to someone that is not a harved grad student. and is not looking into becomeing a stalks broker.
so im sorry. for being human. and haveing my own ideas. and thoughts. im sorry for not bieng one of the " in crowed " like you seem to be.
and im sorry. that all of this means nothing to you, becuse you are better then me ovoiusly. and also better then every one else in the hole world. it seems. becuse you can google stuff. and post links.
now if you dont mind. its my bed time. i do beleave im going to go to sleep now that it is 3 am where i live and i have been up sence yesterday at 5 am. good night good sir/miss. some of us. have to get up in the morning.
You really need me to break it down into on liner jabs and insults like you so you can understand what is being said.
There is no need for a scholars understanding to grasp that a real expert in the field of social demographics says you are flat out wrong.
Step outside your little 4 wall world once in awhile you will be surprised how easy it is to expand your mind a little.
Ideas are based on knowledge knowledge is learned from others that have done the work.
For you to say most MMO game players are under 17 is as completely wrong as saying the Sky is Orange.
Nothing I repeat Nothing you say can refute that fact.
Did I break down into simple enough One liners with small words for you?
LOL I remember when entering that code on Espn.com used to make my little ponies spawn all over the site, before ESPN removed that coder and his "Easter egg"!
Ooooh look I found a couple of old articles on it!

Wikipedia has this to say:
To put things in proper perspective, it should be noted that in 2008 World of Warcraft had 10 million subscriptions. WoW was only one of several MMO actively being played at the time.Quote:
Nick Yee is an American researcher who studies self-representation and social interaction in virtual environments. Yee earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from Haverford College (with a concentration in computer science) and received his Ph.D. in communication from Stanford University in 2007. He is a research scientist at the Palo Alto Research Center in California.
The Daedalus Project, his research into the psychology and sociology of MMORPGs, has collected survey data from over 40,000 game players. The research that has resulted from these interviews has been cited extensively by game scholars, game developers, and popular media. Yee's research has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, and CNN International, among other media outlets. Snippets of an interview with Dr. Yee on the topic of online gaming can be seen in the documentary Second Skin, which premiered at the 2008 SXSW Arts festival.
On March 8, 2009, Nick announced the hibernation of the Daedalus project, saying "...I think I came to realize that continuing the project would require more time than I could devote to it..."
Anyone with a basic understanding of statistics will recognize the flaws in the Daedalus Project's data. First of all the sample data is skewed because it was all acquired using a single method, response to surveys. Second of all, the size of the sample is insignificant. The conclusions draw by Mr. Yee are highly suspect.
You provided multiple links, of which all but two pointed to places that drew their data from the Daedalus Project. One link or 50, it doesn't matter if their information all came from the same place. The two other links pointed to the ESA's site, and the ESA does not confine itself to just MMO games, so their information isn't relevant to the discussion.
For that matter, the ESA doesn't give any indication of how their statistics were derived, which makes them no better than any given person's personal opinion.
