As someone who use to go to Counter Strike tournaments, I hope we get a little bit of the hard core mind set. It is why WOW hit 12 million subs. At the same time I hope no one does the oh Defiance only has a million subs so it must have failed. Because many successful MMOs have 150k-500k subs. I think Defiance can do much better than that, but it all hinges on Shooter players being able to take this game serious. Look back at Tabula Rasa, it was over hyped and died before anyone noticed. The world wasn't ready for a MMOshooter but it looks like it could be ready now.

I think it's going to depend which platform you play. I think the PC players will have the more hardcore "treat it like a job" mentality since that's where the vast majority of the MMOs are, minus one or two that hit consoles. I'd expect the consoles to be significantly more laid back by comparison, due to consoles having a bigger gaming population, and a majority of them being fairly "casual." (Disclaimer: I use that term loosely, since there never really is one defining sentiment of casual vs. hardcore)

Console gamers will have a lot of elitist attitudes, but you won't see many of them going on a thirty minute tirade because someone wasn't online. Granted some console gamers will be coming from PC gaming, but the majority of console gamers won't even have any real Guild experience, or MMO experience.

Agreed with this post. Shooters are usually more hardcore than rpgs, and I hope this has a hardcore community because I always play to improve and not casually, although I can play casually... I guess?

I also hate how people say a game failed because it doesn't have millions of players. I remember someone saying that if FireFall didn't have more than 2-3 million players it would fail at trying to be a competitive game and I brought up the fact games like counter-strike have only 50-100k players... I think it's stupid to say a game will fail if it doesn't have as many players as World of Warcraft.

Then main difference between WoW and most other mmo's isn't the gameplay or the perks. It's the advertising in my opinion. It was one of the first generally big MMO's and they advertised like crazy and then word of mouth went around and made the advertising bigger. The more advertising the more players. I played WoW from the beginning for quite a few years alongside other games and frankly only reason I kept playing was well everyone I knew was playing and didn't want to try something else even though the other games were exactly the same.

Now their is a more broad variety of MMO's so a lot more are spread thin. Though they might not hold record numbers like WoW they are all still very decent games. As I said the only reason why it still towers is the advertising, a lot of lower end MMO's can't get their advertising out or are just to lazy to push the advertising so it only get's spread through word of mouth so less player base. However any game can be successful they just need to advertise correctly and make sure the gameplay actually works and fixes bugs.

Take WarZ for example everyone says that game is horrible ect, well their advertising and speaking to the community was atrocious to say the least so everyone called them liars ect and the game is now buried with trolls/hackers and god knows what else. But that game still thrives for the players who believe in it.

So the TLDR; Will it be taken as seriously as WoW? Only to the true players who believe in the game and want it to thrive.
