Another social failure with Defiance is how the threat level goes up when a friend of a different rank shows up to play with you.
My best combat buddy's ego is 1,000 higher than mine. When we join up, the threat level becomes 10 and small pursuits that normally take us 15 minutes to complete turn into 2 hour long epic battles (even though we are the only two players in the area) that are almost impossible to finish. If we do stay together to fight to the bitter end, our scores are pathetic from being down so many times.
Example: Yesterday, I was at bug basin when my bcb (best combat buddy) showed up. The threat level immediately jumped to 10 and the hellbugs became so bad, we couldnt stay on our feet AT ALL. We had to extract, then go back on our own. We dont mind fighting strong enemies, but when it gets to the point where you can't even roll and dodge enemy fire, it becomes extremely frustrating!!!!
A social failure? Whatever. Its not that people don't want to talk, its that in many cases they don't need to. No need to have to rally and figure out on how to bring down a Dark Matter Monolith when there are points of interest to shoot and its being done by countless amount of Ark Hunters just swarming the thing.
A lot of objectives are self explanatory and not to mention we are millennial's. People don't call and use their voice as much as they prefer to text with people they know let alone want to talk to strangers. Don't blame Trion for not making people social, blame the people if anything. But people do talk via text in the game and its just the way it is.
But its not like Trion isn't capable of having players feel the need to socialize. It very well showed that it was with Gun Slinger Trials when it first arrived as the chat window was lit up with players calling out which trials they needed to do and setting up groups to complete them. And the social frenzy to finish them went on for quite awhile.
Now at days Gun Slinger Trials are not nearly as difficult as once were because of Threat Level and Scaling. Players can now go into them at a standard difficulty with the EGO level they are at and breeze through them solo.
Luckily we will get that old feeling back with Expeditions where players will need to work together more then ever if they want to reach the high tiers all while it being high stakes as they will either take a chance at winning big or leaving empty handed. Trust me, players are going to be in chat recruiting others for Expeditions.
On another note I would like to see the Thorn Liro Arenas and Gunslinger Trials get another set of pursuits for them to match up to the Threat Level times they are now in. Pursuits for completing them on Expert difficulty for one and for the rewards for doing so to be greater on completion. Nothing like the "Ark" weapons which are boasted from Expeditions but for them to have a decent chance of dropping a Legendary. Or hell, if you want to really revitalize Arenas and Trials again have it so that upon completion of doing them on Expert has a chance to land some newly named weapons and some special outfits... Players would be looking to group up to complete them on Expert for some outfits and good named weapons considering players did them over and over again as it was for some crappy El Guano pistol. With that in mind they will most defiantly do them for better weapons and outfits. But as of now Thorn Liro 'Arenas' and Gunslinger 'Trials' themselves are wasted content and are just stepping stones to be able to unlock the weapons the DLCs provide.
lol.
i see more people talking in chat then i like to. i dont know what game this guys playing but hes oviusly trolling just to troll.
people are allways talking in world chat all the time. and also in clan chats. its just a matter of what time your on . what server your on , and who is on at that time, clans have a higher talk rate then most of the other chats becuse clans dont need to talk in zone chat where every one can read what there saying.
the so called anti social ness of this game is a lie.
to me understanding just from the fact this guy posted this post in the forum, and is trying to drag up an agument, he has no friends in game. dosent run with a clan. and plays on a console.
how doi come to that ? simple.
PC NA is full of people 24/7 be them english speaking or some other language speaking group.
some one is allways selling something.
some one is allways recrouting someone .
some one is allways looking for something.
someone is allways seeking out someone else.
but when chats silent . it means people are eather busy. playing the game. like a game. doing what thy want in the game,
or . there talking in there clan chat. or in group chats.
so no . this game is not anti social in any way.
Excellent point.
The "Reindeers" Scavenger Hunt has been quite fun, and demonstrating this argument very well. People are asking for the reindeer names they need to find all the time now. Whenever I find the "reindeer of the day", I will give a shoutout about it, to help other players. Also, I love when someone invites everybody to a major arkfall.Quote:

Of course, social features could improve. Everything could improve. But I wouldn't go as far as to say these are priorities, now, nor do I think the lack of some social features are hampering the game in any way. On the opposite, all I see in Defiance all day, every day, is the population improving. I'd much prefer the developers would concentrate their efforts in dealing with that, because the seasonal events are demonstrating that stability issues could pop up at any given moment, due to the new crowds we have been playing with.
Kudos to your whole post, Nefarious, excellent reading.
Many times the chat is so busy i have trouble keeping up with it. I have to set a window just to clan chat to filter out all the rest. Even then sometimes there are so many of us that it is moving pretty fast.
I met my clan thru this game... Seems like a social success to me.
Our clan uses a voice chat program, Mumble. Because of that I don't always pay attention to area chat, but whatever team we put together is talking and making tactical decisions with each other. Get a voice chat program going with your buds and you will see an improvement in the social aspect of the game.
Note: I would not use the voice channel that is part of Defiance. I will leave it at that. Teamspeak is good and has features that Mumble doesn't. Those two are the only ones I have used. For some reason my rig does not like Skype.
I think Defiance is far far from being "not social", even for a shooter game (where you have your fingers occupied) or when you drive (fingers occupied again) people always chat. I've met some really nice people in the game, with some we even become friends outside the game.
Heck, i even got a new cook recipe from a former clanmate in this game!!!
