Just saw the Defiance (game) commercial on tv and...
If i wasnt already interested in this game.. that commercial wouldnt make me wanna buy it.. no gameplay.. not even cutscenes from the game... it was all live action lol. Hows that gonna generate hype for those who knows nothing about the game already?

it's not really a stand alone trailer, imo. I think it just "sets the scene". I played it for some non gamer friends an they got all excited asking if Mad Max was being remade. I would wait for some more teasers to include more gameplay. I dont think Trion wants to give away any spoilers about content not yet polished. Maybe they will include some footage from beta :)

Industry norm is to create these silly live action or CGI trailers in lieu of gameplay. Look at The Old Republic... almost entirely ALL CGI trailers leading up to the release. Doesn't interest me one bit. But, I hadn't really heard about this game until a pre-order to GreenMan popped up. I watched the live action video and now I'm interested. Not because of the trailer, but the premise of the game.

Nice, any buzz is a good buzz, at least social media is growing, its at 71k. They need to get 500k at least considering this is multiplatform game.

    Hello there,

Well I can not say this tactic is new to Trion, they just work on the content so there is a lot to offer, then they start their adds, like a sleeper bomb they generate the hype close to releases, rather then how most generate it months before their even close to ready and the hype-train moves on to the next stop.

Damn better, 72k followers on FB, does not yet convince me to hit pre-order.. Especially we dont even play together, and we all know healthy MMO population is quite high.

I just spread the word to about 100 people in my multi-gaming group. That's a start. Word of mouth will be huge for this until some more information comes out. Would like to see the beta stepped up too... gives us some more interaction time.

i think it would made the curious interested enough to visit the site and view the trailers themselves, its more getting the name out there than selling copies.

I just wish Syfy and Trion had pumped it up with a Super Bowl ad. They missed a golden opportunity to generate some interest in the game and the series.

Anyone else see the Coke super bowl add with the all types of people racing to get to the coke bottle which turned out to be a sign?
I saw it right as the dune buggies came on screen and thought "Omg it's Defiance!!!"

LOL. I saw that one. Reminded me at first of the scene from The Mummy when the two groups of artifact hunters were racing for Hamunaptra. Did you catch the 'sequel' they ran after the half? :)

I know.. I wanted to make a snarky comment about the Stripper Bowl 47 halftime show, but I think I'd get attacked by rabid Beyonce fans if I did. :D

    $100M combined budget...
I'm sure they could have afforded it. :-) However, it's significantly cheaper for them to just advertise on SyFy, being their own network and all, and most gamers I'm sure watch a few shows on SyFy. Release will probably be quiet, but the game will likely gain momentum two weeks post release once the show airs, and word of mouth starts spreading around.

i think the game will be release 2 weeks before the tv show airs, (i think one reason is they want some characters to appear in the game before they have to go to defiance for show.)

but yea as sweetmadness said, the budget there throwing at this is freaking huge!! i suspect they havnt done superbowl because its still early, 2 months away. its to much money in terms of being to soon.

if superbowl was about 2 weeks before hand i bet it would of been there.

Syfy should definitely use it's own channel as well as WWE programming to get to a lot of viewers. WWE averages about 3-4 million viewers A week

I think it is a brilliant commercial, the live action fits both the TV show and the Game.

Despite the pretend nature of the 'sport', I almost wonder how many actual SciFi fans actually watch that.

Then again, it's probably not much different than the jousting, etc.. at the local ren faire, and I imagine there are quite a few SciFi fans that go to those, even if they don't admit it.

On a side note... WWE is actually creating their own television network. It's why all these extra shows have popped up recently with all of the online podcasts as well. So I'm sure the SyFy crowd wont have to endure much longer.

That said and still on a side note... it still bothers me that they changed the name to SyFy. It's so silly and stupid it drives me nuts. I absolutely hate leet talk and people purposefully misspelling words to look cool. For a network that already has some SILLY movies and shows (that look like 3rd grade CGI), you'd think they want to portray themselves as more serious.

Well I'm guessing that $3.5 million ad was worth it. Considering at least 40% of the country probably saw it, they made a good decision to do that.

i meant "a" ad in general cost 3.5 mil for 30 sec, i didnt mean there was a defiance ad during the game.
