Would also like to mention that without a proper chat within defiance I did not have to endure fanboys who rushed through the game and then started spoiling all the story for me either. :-)

Personally I would love there to be a working chat that has global and trade and what not to be social and interact with people. Occassionally speak gibberish and tease one another or see what other kinds of weapons people have found and then maybe seek them out myself or congratulate them on their luck but with how gaming and communities work in the western market of gaming right now then the above post sums it up really well as well as my own arguments 1 post further above that one.

The question is, what would a better chat system hurt? In theory nothing - but it's the people whom would use it that would also perverse it.

In a product like this, an extended text communication system is unnecessary. There are already systems in place for every type of multiperson activity, which do not require text or chatting to achieve.

The game even has emotes for simple commands (however I would rewrite them).

i think the problem is the chat is kind of hard to find to begin with. There should be at least an option to keep it semi transparent on top, this would help with fluid communication. I never remember to press enter or hit z to bring up the chat window so I miss when anyone chats.

need better chat with wider range + multiple zones - eg has anyoen played STO? thats what i mean - you stil lsee people chatting in the different instance.

What sucks is that you dont even see names ingame unless you move crosshair on them... peopel feel like npc-s

if shot them several times cuz some of them just look like raiders lol.

Uh it's always on, bottom right.
I'm getting the impression that people want to be able to make it four times as large, stretch it and drop it somewhere side-center, where they can always see it

So not only needless zone chat, but also Barrens er I mean global chat.

Yes, that will solve everything! Now please tell us what it is exactly you will discuss that you couldn't do with local chat or voice programs?

Most games come with all tags ON. Your screen is a mess of NPC and PC floating tags which is ugly and immersion breaking. At least with them off you don't know who is what, every body looks like they belong in the world.
The lack of distinction between human and computer is a good thing, not a bad thing.

And how cool is that? Like real life, you wouldn't always know who is an enemy or a foe.
Did you have an 'oh sht!' moment the first time you did it?

That is a horrible idea. If this were a standard MMORPG(it's not), then I'd be inclined to agree, but I sure as hell don't want a prompt popping up when I'm in the middle of shooting somethings face off.

    1) i dont use voice chat - im sick of listening peopel fart, breath, growl and make stupid jokes and tryign to act cool. Also you dont use same voice chat program with people you have never even met. This is not how MMO works.
    2) Local chat is VERY limited range - and sicne we have large open world, it will be basically empty. We need region based chat (eg Madera, Mountain etc) and multi instance - since we have seemless transation you may suddenly end up in a different instance and not know that the person yo uwee talkign with doesnt hear you anymore - no continuity.
    3) This game isnt real life - dont compare it to real life. Its a MMO. not Real Life Online. The name options should be selectable, so you can enable it or hide it.
Whats the poitn of all titles and clan names etc if 99% of the time noone sees it.

just use chat interface from RIFT (simple and efficient) and customize graphics to "DEFIANCE look" and keep it on the screen(move it to the left side please :/)...

I'd also like to throw out that there's no /whisper system. I can't talk to my friends unless I group up with them or unless we're in a clan together. If one of my friends decides to join another clan and I'm running through a dungeon with another group of people, there's no way of contacting them. How did emotes make it in while something like /whisper didn't?

I'm enjoying the game but there are so many problems with it, the lack of a decent social system being one of the huge ones.
