Hate to say it, but you're absolutely right. As I was playing all day yesterday, it bothered me so much. It really leaves you with this feeling of loneliness. So that I wouldn't die from the overbearing loneliness I had to turn on pandora to liven up the mood. I'm not sure if it's just me, but it seems like someone on the team had no idea what makes a good mmo- the MASSIVE, MULTIPLAYER, ONLINE aspect of the game. Honestly, even in little towns crowded with people, I feel as though I'm alone. Riding around, going by players, they're no different than NPC's. The only sense of life I get is when I'm spending my time Ark-Hunting, at least then someone asks where is the nearest ammo crate.... with that I can ensure myself that I'm not the only living person surrounded by NPC's. It's quite sad. There's other problems I have with the game, but seeing as how it just released, I'll hold those to myself and patiently wait for some major Updates. Needed- I should add. Otherwise, this game is going to fall. Hard. ):
Until the chat 1. stay longer and ideally 2. is better designed, this will not change.
Unless you glance at the chat window within a few seconds of someone saying it it will have disappeared before you see it.
Chat is rather buggy on the whole. Sometimes when you try typing it wont even send/display what you wrote. I'm not sure if it only just doesn't display for the individual if you send something, or if it just doesn't send it at all. Either way, the chat needs to be fixed/greatly improved/expanded.
Fixing the chat and making it more useful with a zone chat should be their top priority in my opinion.
Yeah, it is really one of my only major gripes with the game. The decision to do chat like it is on the PC was just not a great idea. However, I do see people chatting at Arkfalls... usually telling people to get the hell out of their stupid vehicles, stop killing the skitterlings or a combination of both. :p
But chat needs to be redone. And it really needs to be a high priority. There is not enough socialization for a MMO game....
Man oh man I agree the level of NOT MMORPG is epic. Not having a chat window to accomidate the console players is stupid seeing as how us PC players don't ever play with those type of people anyway... NO banks, Finding your group is impossible with instant weirdness or even driving down the road... I like following my group on the map because they disappear from view only to find out I have gone 10 miles down the road after they stopped... Maybe it should be called a MMO... Cause there are massive players running around not talking and disappearing constantly...
Social is low because the chat system is abysmal. With half the players not seeing the chat at all because they've turned off voice which also turns off text chat...derp.
Also why is the "chat bubbles" thing always thrown around, having derpy *** chat bubbles does not make a social community.
I wouldn't protest it no, if players want it and its easy to implement sure why not, I'd prefer it to be off by default, cba screen spammed with 100s of chat bubbles staying stupid crap. However there are more pressing problems with the chat system than a chat bubble there are also other ways to encourage social aspects of the game other than chat bubbles i.e reasons to be in a guild and reasons for players to play together.
But again all of this is something the developers can focus on after the abomination of the current voice/text chat has been fixed.
yeah, making the chat window a little bigger and more persistent would go a long way to alleviating the quietness.
I tend to think that the kind of people who need a "reason" to play a multiplayer game with other people are generally lost anyway. ;)
I suspect they also have enough developers to look at the existing chat window, the issue with saving some settings (including voice chat) *and* the possibility of chat bubbles (making chat more obvious for the people who want chat bubbles can only be a good thing for the games social aspects).
It's not like we are talking a 1 man dev team where working on chat bubbles means all work on the existing systems is abandoned.
Wait, who said this game was an real MMO?
I thought it was a first person shooter in a persistent world. Except for the grievers, you would not know it was a multi player game.
As for the small skitterlings make weak points in the Arkfall Rock, they need to give a in game warning, or make them unattackable, cause at the moment, you get rewarded for killing them (highest kill count) but it stuffs everyone else up. Its almost a form of grieving (like parking your large vehicle on a quest giver. Sure you can walk though a vehicle but does not mean you can CLICK on the quest giver.
I've tried to chat but can't seem to find any combination that actually sends a message... anyone know what the list of chat commands are or where to find them?
Chat bubbles in this game would be...stupid.
Try aiming for mobs with a hundred chat bubbles in your way.
Well im not saying that a reason needs to be shoved down players throats, more of an incentive to be grouped/guilded socialize a bit and encourage social communities to grow, nothing more alienating than game systems that present nothing but downsides to being grouped.
And they most likely do have more than one person working on chat, however I imagine that chat coding isn't very simple especially when taking into consideration ingame player distances for /y /s + bubbles (assuming /s /y are even in the chat system at this point in time?) not to mention weaving in a rubbish voice chat. In any case I'd hope the people on the chat development team are focusing on fixing the current mess and only that. Rather have one thing fixed and working properly than 2 half arsed jobs. (safe to say if chat bubbles are implemented soon they'll probably be as messed up as the rest of the system :p)
Get with the times! Who uses chat these days, Teamspeak's where it's at!
See statement above.

That's cause you don't have any friends. Friends will revive you 90% of the time, with a 10% margine of error. :D
The entire chat system needs to be scrapped and rewritten. Problems with it are:
1. Too much "combat garbage" in chat that overruns the actual "players posting messages" chat, so you never see it.
2. Lack of scope definition. How much "area" does Area Chat actually cover? I have no idea, but it's not much.
3. Definitely need a "global chat" for all players on any server.
4. A server-wide channel for "Looking for Group," or need to add more missions to the N-map, like WoW Dungeon Finder. I'd love to get some help on the San Quentin mission but can't get anyone to answer.
5. "Looking for Clan" channel.
Ventrillo, Mumble, teamspeak are your friends. Use them or lose them.
Anyone that knows mmo's knows that chat is useless. Full of rants and trolls.
Guilds, clans, whatever never use chat anymore.
The N-Menu is strictly for instanced grouping. It is dungeon finder, just not for overworld quests. More missions are added as you progress upwards in EGO levels. I have 7 at 631 EGO.
That's half the fun IMHO. Either trolling the trolls or taking a playful shot at someone. It's good fun.
Have to agree, we really need some more social features.
really annoying when you need some people to join you for a mission and theres nobody answering in area chat...
broken chat is broken
I always do my best to try and revive other players when I see them go down. Even if it may put me in danger. But, yes, the chat system needs to be the next thing they fix. Period.
