The legend of drizzt series by R.A Salvatore. Amazing fantasy series with characters you'll never forget!
Not a great reader (I'm sure that won't surprise many of you :) ) but back in the early 80's I read the Dune series of books and more recently in the mid 2000's I read the Sharpe books.
But the one book that I've read that still sticks in my mind is called Shar****, it's about a tribe of native American Indians who worship a large bear named Shar****.

Check out Ian M Banks. he has to be the best sci fi writer ive ever encountered. certainly my fav. hes clearly a clever guy and his books are well thought out with rich exciting story lines.
Note the 'M' as he also writes under just Ian Banks...
for the most part his books are about a super advanced race called the culture who are a multi cultural society run primarily but super advanced computers called Minds. these minds are normally housed in orbitals and country sized space ships.
what i find so good about his books is how well he has thought out everything in this universe. he describes things brilliantly and his ideas are really clever.... kinda like star trek but much much better and a great deal more advanced.
loads of info on wiki bout it. search for ian m banks culture.
if youre passing bournemouth you can borrow my books. ive got them all. :D
The Name Of The Wind (Kingkiller Chronicle) (Patrick Rothfuss).
