Looking for in a guild/clan: Well, I'll just straight up and say it. I'm a role-player. I know most people will immediately go "Ewwwwwww, not one of those," as this game has the shooter label, but meh, that's how it is. Ideally I'd be looking for a guild with other role-players, that's priority #1. Priority #2 is a calm and relaxed atmosphere. I am not competitive, and I care not for end game content or being at the top of leaderboards. I dislike the super-serious mentality that I know will come with a lot of guilds / clans because I'm here to have fun, not to get shouted at because I pressed the wrong button, or because I experimented away from the normal, accepted meta.
That said, I don't know how well the game will lend itself to role-playing, only time will tell that. If it really doesn't I'd probably just look for a chilled atmosphere who accept the fact that I will be writing fan-fiction. What can I say, I like stories. (Don't worry, it's not as bad as you may think... I hope!)
*Note* I am not a typical MMO player, contrary to what preconceptions you may have on role-players. See gaming history below!
Gaming history: Gaming history... Gaming history... Well, I started in '99 playing Half Life, Unreal and Unreal Tournament. I haven't stopped playing the Unreal series or the Half Life series, they are still very much up there as my favourites. Games I would say that I play / played / actually liked would be... All the Half Life games, all the Unreal games (apart from UT2003... What was that about?!), all things related to Valve and the source engine (I'm talking your L4Ds, gmods, even Dino D-Day!). I branched out into RTS, playing a lot of Dawn of War (all of them!), though that's where my RTS days stayed. I dislike it as a genre for the most part. Also, I can't stand Call of Duty or Battlefield. I enjoyed Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare a lot. I played that in multiplayer a lot on a hardcore Search and Destroy server, got to know the community and had an absolute barrel of laughs, but then they took away ye-olde dedicated server browser and made it essentially a re-skin of the previous with a terribad storyline. Battlefield I just never enjoyed. Ever. Now, if I want a realistic, modern shooter, I'll play Insurgency.
On consoles, I used to be a Playstation user, until the PS3 was like "Ha! Terrible backwards compatibility for you!" (although I did play and complete Metal Gear Solid 4 many, many times). The games I played on the PS1 and PS2 were all of the Tekken games, Final Fantasy 7 through 10-2, all of the Crash Bandicoot games and all of the Metal Gear Solid games. Then I moved to the xbox 360, where I continue to be a Microsoft drone (all hail the overlords?). Don't worry, I hate Halo as well, the games I play on the xbox are the Tekken games (the newer ones), Dead or Alive 4 and 5, Mass Effect 1 through 3 and Gears of War (all of them!) as my "typical xbox game"
On the topic of other MMOs... Eh... None of them will ever have a place in my memories like the games listed above. I played WoW... For a month, before I got bored and left. Believe me when I say that a lot of role-play that went on there scared me as well. I played Fallen Earth, which was actually kinda nifty, similar to Defiance in quite a few ways, though it wasn't very well polished or optimised, so I ended up leaving that when it became apparent that if you didn't subscribe then your leveling dropped to a snail's pace. I played SWTOR which got me for a while, I liked the story in it, but the mechanics and gameplay left a lot to be desired. I've also played The Secret World, but again, I just find it a little too repetitive and grindy. I'm hoping that Defiance will be more interesting, being a shooter-MMO hybrid as opposed to an MMO. I hate grindy gameplay with a passion.
What you are looking forward to in Defiance: Well, I'm a shooter gamer, who likes to role-play and write fiction in a lawless, desert-like universe. What am I looking forward to? Shooting things, writing bucket-loads of fan-fiction inspired by what I see and do, shooting more things and potentially role-playing with others. To a gamer like me, this game's concept is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for, so there's very little about Defiance that I'm not looking forward to. I'll be a regular player in the game and a regular series watcher on the TV.
Oh, and I'm a co-op player. So I'm looking forward to teaming up with people to kill massive alien monster things of doom more than I'm looking forward to shooting other players in the face. That said, no one escapes my scope. No one!
*Note* This player has very little skill and lacks a competitive nature, the above is just empty trash talk.
Sorry for the slight wall. I tend to get carried away...
