So I got a fire shotgun, but it says it does about 40% less damage directly than the one I use.
Is it worth keeping?
Is elemental damage not figured in?

They're called nanos in the world of defiance, and they all subtract 10% of a weapons base dmg off. The ego of the weapon, rolls (white, green, blue, purp & orange depending on rarity), mastery & any mods attached to a weapon can affect its stats, in this case, dmg output.
Edit: I forgot synergies, they also can affect weapon stats. It sounds like a lot to take in but its pretty easy to pick up as you go.
I think so, just as long as you have those nano specific perks in your load out. Things get even more beneficial when your gear has the right blend of synergies.
When you're first starting out, don't be so wrapped up with numbers and stats. Just try everything and kill stuff. Find out what you actually prefer to use and what works best. Try different nanos in different situations, because depending where, they'll do more or less actual damage.
It's not ALL about damage. Some of the guns I use are less powerful, but I like shooting them or the synergy of the gun benefits me in some way. The game has enough variety so you can find something you want that will still let you kill things.
The fire shotty will come in handy with hellbugs. Make a loadout and as you unlock perks, use some of the fire damage ones and it will help you even more.
Op, People keep saying use the fire nano perks if you use a fire nano gun. What they keep forgetting is that the nano perks can not be unlocked without a specific DLC. If I remember right, it is DLC 5.
