    Defiance Developer Q&A: July 20

Welcome, ark hunters! You’ve asked, we’re answering. We’re back with another action packed Defiance Developer Q&A!
    1. We got firework spikes and launchers with Midsummer Mutiny. Do you plan on putting more fun novelty items in the game for Holiday events or otherwise?
We always wanted to try and see how novelty weapons would be received in the game. In the beginning, we suspected most players preferred to keep the game serious and not be surrounded with novelty guns. However, we do believe that this sentiment has shifted over the last year with the addition of the Holiday Events. We believe there would be a high probability of more novelty weapons being added in the future. With that being said, please note we do not intend to have the game overrun with novelty weapons. This is one of the key reasons why the novelty weapons from Midsummer Mutiny had the stats they had.
    2. I think Midsummer Mutiny highlighted the growing phasing problem that Defiance has had since F2P launched. What is being done by the team to combat this?
Yes, we have noticed an increase of concentrated players during these holiday events. We have considered refactoring existing events to where they will end up in an Arkbreak to deal with whatever menace the players were dealing with. This way, we would end up capping each instance at a certain number of players. The unfortunate down side of this is the fact that a few players might not make up a full group. Hulker Hell with 5 players would not likely end in the favor of the players.
    3. It is very common for users to not listen to instructions in Warmaster instances, can a group vote kick be added? The framework is already in place for this.
We won’t put in a Warmaster kick function at this point. We will have a private instances function for the Warmaster instance, they should be active on the Public Test Server by the time you read this.
    4. Has the dev team tracked the source of the issue with consoles locking up? Seems to be getting worse every day, a regular occurrence ever since MM launched.
Our engineering team found some code recently that wasn’t optimal for non-high end PCs and consoles. The next major update will include some of these changes and we hope the this will resolve a decent chunk of the performance issues consoles and some PC players were seeing.
    5. Any chance we may see any new jackpots weapons added with the Pandemonium synergy?
At this time, there are no plans to re-release a weapon with the Pandemonium synergy.
    6. Is raining in the game still going to be a thing?
So rain was something we did try in Silicon Valley – but as you may recall, it hit a few snags. One of the major ones being frame rate performance on lower end PC as well as just plain not showing up. We have seen some weather related performance issues last year with the snow effect during last winter’s Solstice Strike event. If we do use the rain weather effect, it would need be isolated to rare events such as Solstice Strike.
    7. When will render distance be able to be modified for PCs?
We were just discussing the proxy memory slider on PC earlier today – we are looking in to expanding memory pools on PCs with more modern video cards. This may not change the hard draw distance set in some instances though, but it should help with objects dropping too soon if you have a PC rig that can support it.
    8. Will you be bringing anymore specialty boxes to the in-game lock box vendor?
It depends on what you are after from the boxes. For specific synergies, they will be available via the new synergy boxes and those will be bit store only. For cosmetics, we are planning to balance these both in-game and in the bit store.
    9. I noticed a lot of comments from players who were less than happy with the decreased RNG rates for the Midsummer Mutiny event. Is this the standard that should be expected from events moving forward?
In terms of drop rates, we will be adjusting events moving forward as we are still balancing the drop rates for participation. In the previous events, we saw that more players than expected were getting what were considered rare weapons in the community, something that made the player feel unique from other players. It isn't a rare legendary jackpot weapon if everyone has one, so we decided to adjust drops based on that. This also includes the changes that were seen with the weekly and daily contracts.
    10. Will there be any story content related to Season 3 of the show?
Season 3 of the game is mainly the expedition content, in terms of crossover it was a little more difficult this year due to multiple factors. Nolan and Irisa were in a stasis pod until episode 1 of Season 3, which is part of what made this more difficult.
    11. What are your thoughts on a couple of Etaew's "Hypothetical Features"? I think something like Instant Adventure (similar to what RIFT has going) would be a huge boon to Defiance.
As one of the original designers from the Rift team, LoCarb is pretty fond of this idea of “Instant Adventure” type system for Defiance. We’ll see if we can work out something similar to happen, but keep in mind these two games are built entirely differently.

For the "I'm busy with Inventory" indicators, we have concerns that this feature might be shut down by many players due to it creating clutter in certain instances.
    12. Are there any plans for new missions or quests?
We are in the planning phases with art and design to add some additional story content in the future.
    13. What are the plans to improve the Arkbreaker DLC experience?
With the next update, we plan on releasing Private Instances that will allow you to enter one that is a fresh instance that you control who can enter. This feature is currently being tested on PTS. For now, this only works on the Major Arkbreak.
    14. Is there a possibility of the spinal tap synergy becoming available again?
At this time, retired Synergy boxes that have been taken off are not planned to return.
    15. Will there be any passes at the vendors anytime soon? Will we see any more content added to DLC 1 such as a unique synergy?
While we do plan to evaluate vendors in the future, we don't have a date in the near future pinned down for this. When we make a pass at the vendors, we can also evaluate making additions to DLC 1.

    Fixed that for you guys.

If the time that would have gone to that went to the DM expo instead, it was all worth it.

Not to say I don't have other concerns...

I'm curious, what were the other factors? Nolan and Irisa aren't the only characters on the show - at least they weren't prior to the start of Season 3, and we have had other characters show up in game before, so why would any "crossover" content need to include Nolan and Irisa. Heck one of the better mission arcs was the Plague event that crossed over into the show. I mean, seriously, this game and the show were sold on being able to do content like that. What in the heck is really preventing it from happening?

We already know that SyFy has serious issues with its post-processing team that makes any viable crossover content from appearing in the show, but both Season 1 and Season 2 of the game had some great crossover missions. What prevents that from occurring now and in the future (like the failure of Indo-Kenya to appear in an alternate reality Bay Area - at least to somewhat explain the screw-up by SyFy)?

Finally some console optimization. Nothing like debugging someone else's code and finding hidden gems.

Seriously. Not buying this response. Soooo many things that could have been done. We still have Keyna's indogene clone running around in fake bay area.

What about Mordecai Haipern and the writing of his book? Maybe we have to save his draft copy from raiders that accidentally stole it or something. I mean, that book NEEDS to be saved from Raiders!

A Rynn comeback would be awesome. Eye patch and all.

EDIT: Since Season3 didn't actually finish filming until close to the actual start date, there are/were still editing going on. I can see how if they didn't actually share story content/scripts with you, but that'd just be lame.

Thank you very much, Kiwi, for answering all of my questions. I'm a big fan of the game and love that I can voice concerns and see an answer. (That's what brought me back after the F2P transition, that commitment to open dialogues.)

I am very disappointed that we won't be seeing any Season 3 crossover content. That was a big draw before the game initially launched. I won't pretend to know what goes on behind the scenes, but it is definitely a bummer that there seems to be less emphasis on the transmedia angle. Especially since the show has probably had more nods to the game this time around than in previous seasons.

I admit, I'm not too sure what the Irisa/Nolan thing has to do with the crossover content, since (as someone else pointed out) it's a very rich universe with all kinds of interesting characters running around. Anything (even something like the plague story from one of the missions) would've been better than nothing at all. Dealing with Indo-Kenya was something I definitely thought was going to pop up, or maybe a run-in with Rahm Tak's rogue VC group.

Anyway, I am excited to see if anything comes of Etaew's Instant Adventure idea, and I hope that the story content mentioned involves some level of crossover with the show. I actually wouldn't mind if Season 3 crossover content came after the TV's season aired if it gave the team more time to work on things and figure out what was finalized in the show and what got cut from the shooting scripts.

So apparently I called it in the questions thread. Season 3 is officially the Year of the Bit Store.

    Very disappointing, but not unexpected.

And that 'stasis' excuse is a malodorous pile of pow shtako like the 'currency inflation' excuse was. You don't seriously think anyone believes that nonsense, do you?

Still no response in why the DLC trophy issue hasn't been fixed, the infector grenades or how they intend on getting rid of the freight yard bandits.

    Price Setting Needed
What about the thief's/scammers issued!! Sorry to be blunt, but this needs to be done/answered. While it was appreciated, the note about reporting these thief's/scammers is not enough--we need TRION assistance, viz.,

When can we expect the Price Setting Cap??

If you all can lock weapons etc., you can set/lock prices so that people can't charge more than two (2) times the Matrix price for any weapon or mod that they sell to others. This will effectively STOP all the ridiculous price gouging.

To quote my father.. "I was born at night, but not last night".

So seeing as how Nolan and Irisa were in stasis for a few months, the entire Defiance universe went into unexpected stasis. Gotcha.

Can see this putting a stop to selling full stop, who's going to sell a piper for the same price as a magnum pistol? Both have the same matrix value, plus the price gougers would benefit more here as they'd be able to snap up every decent gun for sale with their multi millions in scrip they have accumulated, I don't have much scrip but my motto is if I can't afford it, I can't have it... Simple, no need for my inability to obtain certain items to effect every damn player in the game! Not cool

This comment fills me with foreboding.
While it is valid that not everyone should be walking around with a plethora of named weapons; I also think the over-compensation factor in regard to weapon-drop rng is in the future.
As was demonstrated by the ridiculous MOD DROP RATE in the Midsummer event.
Over 330 converters to my 5 toon/lower playtime account? Really?
And no T2 drops at all (on the ground). I won't get into the rarity of T4's...

I have a hard time believing the response concerning the tie-over with the show...

Wasn't it just season 2 that had us doing a lot of missions with Varus and Stahma? Nolan and Irisa were only in a few of those missions. To tell me it "made it more difficult" seems like a cop-out and a way to further "sell" the expeditions.

The advertising for the game promised crossover and tie-in content with the show. I am now several episodes into season 3. Nothing new to game that has anything to do with the show since....(crickets)

Is the writing staff even still employed?

So for the foreseeable future, my Order is a companionless, piece of scrap. Disappointing, but not unexpected. I'll just have to beg Rashere to reconsider...

Please oh almighty Smithmaster Rashere, I but a humble peasent humbly request that you reconsider adding more Pandemonium synergy weapons in the future. My poor pistol is all alone in this world with no chaos to bring order to...

For the people wanting price limits and such; you do realize that is a pointless endeavor if your goal is to be able to get the best gear right? What will happen is the people selling will require trades and just not sell for scrip for the same reason they don't vendor the weapons when they are done with them. This won't be a good thing because if you can't afford the scrip the chances of you having a weapon they want is slim; or you wouldn't be worried about the scrip because you could offer the weapon as a trade. All it will do is remove scrip as a viable currency for trades. Why exactly do you think this is a good idea?

On the original thread topic: I'm bummed about the Pandemonium and Spinal tap synergies not being expected to make a return. Pandemonium is the only backpack synergy that is done correctly and very few people will ever see it. It's not just that it's only a jackpot; it's that it is the rarest synergy (only being on two weapons) on a jackpot which only lasted a short time (compared to Guardian Angel which was around at least three months). The largest problem is that the weapons are good by themselves but are only jackpot quality when combined with the synergy. So really those of us with only one of the weapons didn't get a jackpot; we got a good weapon with no possibility of getting it turned into something better. I'm glad I didn't spend real money on the boxes; cause then I'd be pissed.

Regarding the low quality of drops from the event I will say this: Don't cater to those who need to be one of only a handful of people possessing an item to feel special. I'd rather everyone but me have a great weapon than me be the only one with a great weapon. Overabundance of quality is ALWAYS preferable to a lack thereof. Whether it be talent, content or items it is always in everyone's best interest to have more quality than less. Having rare items is good; it gives people something to work for. Having those rare items be obtainable by less than a fraction of one percent is not. People like the challenge of obtaining something; no one wants it handed to them. However, they need to believe there is actually a possibility of obtaining the item for it to mean anything. The RNG system is already bad enough as it rewards quantity over quality; compounding it by lowering the drop rates on already rare things is not a winning proposition.

Regarding render distance: For the love of RNGesus do not tie more of the games functions to computer performance. It's bad enough I can't use needlers because the instant a single enemy is on screen the firing rate drops by 20%; adding in something that will allow those with better computers to have, effectively, an automatic win over those with slower computers is an egregious mistake. Note that this only pertains to allowing the render distance to be increased. Setting a minimum at which everything always renders is fine as long as the maximum is hard set and the current system of rendering enemies as top priority is maintained.

On the whole this weeks question and answer session was a little lackluster. You separated the Pandemonium/spinal tap questions into two when a simple statement of "retired synergies are not planned to be re-released" would have covered both questions. You also had two questions which had the same answer regarding Warmaster and the coming of private instances. While I do realize those are two separate issues; I am fairly certain they could have been combined into a single question.

I do like the addition of novelty weapons and appreciate the attempt to keep them from being either so obtrusive as to be annoying or so prevalent that they are taking over our inventories. However, during the course of the event I had four firework spikes drop. That is a little too rare for a single use item which is not capable of being recharged. The drop rate would have been acceptable if it came with a full complement of spikes; but single drops at that low rate is too low. As far as the firework launchers go; the effect is eclipsed by a regular rocket explosion. So we got something that does no damage; has a five second reload and was expensive yet is less impressive visually than a regular rocket launcher. That just doesn't make sense to me.
