Why does everyone jump on the FTL bandwagon?

You don't need FTL to get to Earth. You do need advanced ships that have the capacity to have life support systems for hibernation sleep and storage of your crew, food, weapons, and stuff. But you don't need FTL.

Why do we always jump to this conclusion about this in movies and TV shows? movies ringtones

I get the impression in Defiance the Votans don't have FTL drives on their Arks.. But I do think they told a whole bunch of lies when they made their 5000 year trip to Earth...... They knew what Earth was like and would have known it had some kind of life. One of their ships was on Earth 3000 years before events in the TV show are supposed to take place.

The only thing that needs to be said is "sci-fi channel".

I would say because it's a lot easier to show. Sub-light ships travelling for extended periods in deep space have been covered a fair bit too (generational ships or hibernation) in science fiction, like the recent Passengers movie.
The problem with generational ships is that you can't use the same actors all the way through (unless they are clones or something) and they would need to address all the issues like fuel, food, water, continuous maintainence and repair (at least if they wanted it to have more depth or realism).
Hibernation does away with some of this points, but then it doesn't make interesting viewing to watch somebody sleeping for an hour LOL :D.

With the FTL gimmick in writing sci-fi you can jump great distances and maintain the pace of the story. It's the same thing for normal TV and film - they don't always show the actors travelling by foot/train/bus/plane etc cos often that would be too boring. The just do a little segue - maybe a plane taking off or landing - and then bam, James Bond is in another country! :) Generally, if you don't use FTL then you start worrying about time differentials and time dilation etc. By the time they get to Planet X to save the Xorbons, the Xorbons have all died!

I'm sure there plenty of plot holes in Defiance as it is...like how come more people didn't know about EGO devices? And how the EGO device was portrayed in the show didn't really resemble the in-game one, as far as I can recall. Then there's the weapon appearances etc :).

Pro tip: The show was cancelled after 3 seasons, doesn't make a bit of difference anymore...

Just a thought but sleeping for 5000 years would still end poorly just cuz your asleep doesn't mean you stop aging. And if I were planning a journey that long I think I'd plan to keep people up and productive growing food to produce oxygen
