Defiance itself has no subscription but its more than likely you will need a gold membership with xbox live to play online. As for pretty much every other game on xbox.
According to the 1 hour stream on IGN it said you will need Xbox Live Gold.
You just need an Xbox live subscription, and the game... just need to pay to get the game, other than that its no fee-per-month
It is free as far as subscriptions go. Pay $60 and its yours.

Akado is correct. Defiance doesn't need a subscription but you do need to have an Xbox live gold membership to play it as it is online only. Just encase you are wondering when you purchase the game you will have to install it to your hard drive to be able to play it. It will be a 7GB instillation.
you need to pay the electricity company to have your tv, surround sound, and xbox working. you will also need to pay for high speed internet and you will need a xbox 360, and xbox live gold, but that's true of all games is it not

i haven't got my loot for it going to f2p,but it seems like im seeing a lot of new players that don't have a clue.makes PvP hilarious...guess what im saying is im seeing a ton of new people,is it just my imagination or are we f2p?

wow you got all your wires crossed... yes this post is a year old... but that was when the game had just come out, and they had at the time no plan to go free to play. and it was really asking if they need gold to play it, which will be yes as its required for online play on xbox.
evidently the guy who posted yesterday just did a search for the term and didnt look that it was a year ago and nothing to do with the current state of the game.
