Wouldn't it be nice to not be called "Hey you" by the in-game voice actors? LOL.

Not a big gripe. More of a tongue-in-cheek observation... with all the advances in gaming you would think they'd come up with a method of vocally inserting our name into the game to make the story seem that much more authentic.

I mean, come on. If I ask my phone where the closest place to buy a cheeseburger is it will vocally respond and pull up a map, just in case. If I say, "Call Angie" it says, "Calling Angie". If I'm driving and someone sends me a text I can have my phone read it to me if I don't want to wait to read it myself.

But on even the most up-to-date MMOs or RPGs you can name your character "Blake Warmonger" or "Sweetnastysexy592" but the stupid game is still gonna call you "Hey you" or "my employee". Maybe it's me, but it seems that this technology should be available.

Read up on that technology, you'll understand.

I personally don't mind being called Ark Hunter all the time. But after the very first cutscene, when I realized the main character was mute, I was really mad.

I really really really wish they would have added voice acting for us, even if it was only one female and one male voice.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. They've voiced at least some of the lines out characters use, it wouldn't have been that much of a strain on resources to add a line here or there for our characters. :\

OP, the problem with this is, I'm sure you phone sounds like a robot, no? Now, attempting to have your name voiced out in the game would be next to impossible, Unless you want the voice itself to completely change from being a human voice actor to a different sounding all together robotic voice.

Theres a reason they still use voice actors for games as well. Its cause we still can't make human sounding voices through the computer. The closest we have come that I know of is the vocaloid program, which is just using thousands of voice samples from a person and slapping them together to form a voice.

I think about how many times people actually call me by my name....it's not that often. Sometimes the silence actually says more than canned responses you would never ever ever say *cough SWTOR cough*

Also we are a good twenty years away from the kind of tech you are speaking of and that's being generous.

I address this in another thread, the fact that the player is mute is never a problem in games with a first person view, such as Half Life. Because the player puts them selves in that position.
The problem is when they try to make a scene cinematic, and show the player character, and they don't say anything.
Alyex Vance asked Gordon Freeman hundreds of questions, and he never spoke once. But because you never saw Gordon stair blankly back it didnt look creepy.

It would be really difficult to have the NPCs call each of us by name, because people make weird names, and a lot of them would be mispronounced every time. Back in the day, Dr. SBAITSO was a program that came with Sound Blaster cards and would "talk" back to you when you typed stuff into its interface. A friend of mine had a slightly unusual name which was constantly mispronounced unless he typed it in a special way.

I guess if there were a place, during character creation, that you could tweak the pronunciation of the name, I don't see why they couldn't use technology similar to Vocoloids that have been around for a decade or so.

It's just really weird that we never say anything... When we feel chatty... we nod. (Except emotes)
When you watch a cutscene your character seems like someone who is just told what to do and does them.. without any real motivation other than being Von Bach's employee.(As far as I know ATM, still not done with the main story.. I've been hunting Arkfalls a lot)
    I don't mind it, it's just awkward.

Perhaps, one way to side step the issue is to offer 20 or 30 nicknames, all spoken by each of the voice actors ( probably beginning in season 2 ) this could also be another revenue stream for Trion, by selling unique nicknames, so you could think eventually Trion could sell the name "Jack ***" and everyone would call you "Jack ***"

There'd only be two options for this.

One: Use text-to-speech technology to convert the entered name into vocal speech. The problem here should be obvious - text-to-speech technology sucks and it won't sound like a human being, let alone the voice actor.

Two: Have the voice actors read off a list of names. At this point you'll be paying a lot more for the actor's services and no matter how many names you have them read off, they're not going to get everyone's name (especially since so many people's names aren't names at all, but rather things like XxXGokuWeedLord420xXx). So then at that point you either have a set list of character names to pick from and that's it, OR, you exclude 90% of your playerbase from this and still call them "hey you," while a very small portion of players get a surprising "Hey Alex!"

I can live with being addressed as "hey you" and "ark hunter" but the fact that the only sounds your character can make would go good in a porno is the problem I have with things (screaming, grunting, et cetera)

I wish my character would at least nod or whistle or anything. Feels like playing a complete dummy. Also, a little bit sad that my character is being pushed around like a brat "Come over here" "You're driving" "Get over there". The only character that seems nice is Ara.
