Do we need the disc in the Xbox to play? Can I sell the game to my friend and allow him to install it? I'm guessing this is what the legal jargon means in the manual but besides that, has anyone tried to play off hard drive only? I'm at work

You need the disc in the Xbox in order to play.
Are you being serious or is this a joke?!
You need the disc to launch the game in the first place. Second installing the disc (xbox dashboard) to the hard-drive is just to decrease wear and tear on the disc, and disk drive. Plus it keeps the noise down.
Thirdly in-game when the disc installs it sets itself up for their updating system for future content, and optimizations to run as best on the 360 etc.
