There HAS to be a programming hardcap though, there isnt enough HD space on the planet to hold an infinite number of inventory slots.
PC's are around 64-bit processing, so if that's the case the highest possible value for a positive 64-bit integer is 9,223,372,036,854,775,807, or 2^63-1, or simple 9.2x10^18 Maximum inventory slots attainable.
Attaining that many inventory slots would require you to purchase the +15 Inventory Slot item 614,891,469,123,651,720 times.
Buying 6.1x10^17 inventory slot items would require a Bits currency total of 221,360,928,884,514,619,368.
You would have to buy the 5,200 bit pack 42,569,409,400,868,196 times to reach 2.2x10^20 Bits.
That would cost $2,128,470,470,043,409,801.62 USD.
To put that dollar amount in a little perspective, the current US National Debt is only $16,807,491,790,190.54 USD
-I'm sure there are other math nerds out there who will double check my calculations... heh
