Do you watch anime and more importantly...do you get emotional?
I am just curious. How many people watch anime, whatever it is. And do you ever find yourself getting emotional?

I love anime because it has not been censored and white-washed for mass consumption. The characters have all thier flaws intact which I feel adds a better sense of an emotional connection to the characters. They seem more realistic. When a character has thier flaws, whether they are vulgar, violent, stupid, or just being a complete jerk. It makes the character seem more realistic. If a character is perfect, then there can be no connection because the mind knows that everyone has flaws that cant be censored.

And for this effect there have been many times where there has been an emotional/climactic moment in the show and I find myself opening up the floodgates. There could be a part where a character dies or is critically injured...or just bares thier raw soul...and I am not afraid to say it...I bawl Boo-Hoo-Hoo Pass the tissues!

What do you think? Do you agree? disagree? what do you watch? and do you allow yourself to get emotional?

I do and don't like anime. I guess the better answer is there are only a few anime titles I have enjoyed. Question: Has anyone seen Vampire Hunter D? I watched it in the mid to late 90's (if my memory serves me well) and I have always wanted to rewatch it but I can't ever find it. I have checked my local Hastings Entertainment for years and have never seen it for rent or for sale.

One anime that I really like is called Claymore. Watched the whole thing on Netflix and fell in love with it.

Vampire Hunter D was old school anime import from the late 80s/early 90s. Hard to find in english dub as most of that was during the fan sub era. I find anime now has tried to main stream so hard that most of it is repetitive. Very few anime stand out from the crowd, I mean everyone has their fan base. But try to imagine like 100 different fan groups each with the rabid fandom strength of say the StarWars fan base... scary stuff! lol

I've enjoyed Trigun, Robotech, Robot Carnival, Nauica of the Wind, Gundam Wing, Gundam MS08th Team, Evangelion, Berserk... almost all the older stuff.

I wasn't aware of that. That explains a lot. Anime should be more like the older stuff. Anything you can suggest that may be similar to Claymore or Vampire Hunter D? I don't really like mechs or gundams nor do I like any of the weird "school drama" types of anime that I see listed on Netflix.

I have seen a few episodes of Trigun and it is okay. One of my best friends loves Vash the Stampede.

Argh I know a lot as these 2 are the only types of anime I watch, but I haven't seen any anime in a while so the names of them are gone :/

I try and watch a little of everything. I watch Crunchyroll and Neon alley on xbox. But I would agree, there are so many that try to be mainstream rather than being good. BUT in order to be mainstream you have to remove anything that could be deemed 'offensive' to anyone, even if its a critical character trait. Some may call it toilet humor but others call it being more realistic. But by white washing and stripping away anything that could help form a connection with the character. I have seen so many really good really emotional animes that have thier share of bad habits and warped humor. But when the emotional moments hit, I cry and sob every time. Those times where a character dies (or is close to death), Has a heart-wrenching realization, delivers a painful truth or a heartfelt plea. Those big moment s when it shows how much of a connection is formed.

Real anime should form an emotional connection between anime and audience....not anime and corperate profits...but thats just me.

Some of the anime I am watching are: Phi Brain, Fate Zero, Magi: The labyrinth of magic. And a few others I cant remember the names of right now.

I think this is close Nausica of the Valley of the Winds was released state side under the name Wind Warriors as well, I recommend the subtitle over the dubbed US release it makes more sense/less childish.

You could try Berserk, that is newer but has a great story and characters as well as Cowboy Bebop. Fist of the North Star is old school, Bubblegum Crisis is cyberpunk/silly/sex kitten kind of stuff but wasn't bad, and one more bloody gore one... Mega... ugh I cannot remember. Akira of course... and if you want to see amazing animation in a film of shorts Memories or Robot Carnival are amazing. I can also recommend a US animation 'Heavy Metal' the original for a neat 'Tales from the Crypt' kind of film about good vs. evil, warning has nudity.

Although some of those will be hard to find I'd imagine...

Yeah I definately prefer Subbed over dubbed. Subbed is a direct translation of the origional script, However dubbed leaves plenty of opportunity to, as I said, censor and white wash the script, removing any language or habits (verbal or otherwise) that could possibly offend ANYONE in ANY WAY possible. But by doing that it makes the character completely unrealistic and thus unable to connect with on an emotional or deeper level. it becomes "Yeah, I am watching...so what?" rather than being able to identify with characters in many ways.

as for good rps, I have been watching "Phi Brain" which is pretty awesome I think. Got me interested in doing mind/logic puzzles. Phi brain is basically a group of people who have to solve brain puzzles to defeat the enemy, but these puzzles are done on a massive scale. And failure could result in death.

Not a huge fan of anime but... I loved Kaiji. One of the greatest series I have ever watched. That it was free of some really pestering anime tropes was a plus as well.

I have been an anime fan since I was 21 or so. I am 34 now. My first ever anime or manga that I was exposed to(well, actually I was exposed to Voltron as a child because technically it was an anime, even if it was based off of an anime called Beast King GoLion)was Ranma 1/2. When I first read the manga, I was laughing so hysterically and loud that my dad had to come into my room and ask me what was so damn funny. I just told him he wouldn't understand. LOL. I later got into the anime and fell in love with it. After that, there was InuYasha which I fell more in love with than Ranma 1/2. These days some of my favorite anime are Bleach(as you can tell by my avatar pic and user name(Riku is my Japanese nickname, a shortening of my name in Japanese, patoriku. And Kurosaki is the last name of the main character of Bleach. And 15? 15 in Japanese is Ichigo. LOL.)), Naruto, Death Note. Some old favorites like Blood+ & Air Gear. But Ranma 1/2 and InuYasha will always have a place in my heart. I even saw the live action Ranma 1/2 TV drama and it wasn't half bad. I also am a massive fan of Hayao Miyazaki's work. Every film of his when you watch it, it makes you feel like you've been transported to another world. Some of my favorite movies he's made are My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle.

Kemono no Souja Erin almost made me cry... And I'm a Hellsing/Gundam/SamuraiX/Tenchi loving anime person but the story behind that was a work of art brilliantly done in anime form.

I've watched a great deal of anime.

Anime I would particularly recommend are Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Texhnolyze, Planetes, Eve no Jikan (Time of Eve) and Jormungand. Also Dimension Bomb (a series of anime short films).

All made me at least a little emotional.
