I saw where someone said to uninstall and reinstall to fix it, so I'm trying that now.

I can not even get to the character screen to check to see if my toon is gone.IF your toon is not on character screen it is still on trion's servers.They wiil be back.
i hope so cause i'm seeing people on the servers playing i'm guessing they the servers are up an running?

Don't worry, I'm sure once the servers are back up, all characters will be back... mine is gone at the moment as well... just don't create a new one.
YES WHAT JD JUST SAID DON'T MAKE ANOTHER CHARACTER i did that back in 2013 an had to start all over again it sucked because i was already at max level and 4000 ego and had to do it all over again by the time i got back to 4000 ego i didn't feel like grinding anymore
Only option was to make a new one, clicked on it to see if the server was really up, it started the "Votan invasion was more an immigration", i clicked through to character customization, then canceled and exited game. So I guess that's confirmation that my level 39 character is gone (for the time being at least).
Now the server is showing as being down again. Two hours "for a quick restart" and missing characters...

Strange, I'm still getting the CRITICAL message; saying that "The Defiance service is not available. Please try again later."
Every once in awhile when I restart the app, I get the blank character screen... I just restart it again so I can keep trying the server.
What a failure on Trion's side. They clearly need a new sysadmin. The total lack of communication suggests that this daily restart is automatic and NOT monitored, which is plain grotesque.
Please don't attempt to create any new characters if it appears as though yours is missing.
yeah i don't think anyone is dealing with this at the moment because i can't find any response from any devs about this. this happend and or started right after reg. maintenance if it wasn't automated you would think if there was a problem they would have responded on twitter already. characters being deleted or gone after a regular maintenance should not be happening. i just hope some one over there gets this resolved and or wakes up to find this happening soon.
Please devs can we get a few words on a eta for a fix.

Well servers may be up but ALOT of people are missing characters, me included. Aftr trying to log in for 10 minutes and getting the critical error I finally got in only to find that my characters are gone.Quote:

If it helps anyone in the same situation, a friend of mine restarted his PS4 17 times, and his toons are back. The restarts were probably pointless, it looks like a major glitch on Trion's servers or the Character Selection UI (BTW, try to press Left/Right on the D-Pad to scroll through your characters, maybe they're just repositioned).
I *think* it's related to PS4 only. Any XBox users experienced this problem today?
In the meanwhile, do NOT create a new character. Hit the @TrionHelp and @DefianceGame Twitter accounts. They have been working for me, better than the forums.
All the characters I created last night are gone. The first character I created and deleted shortly after was there. The bits from the character pack I purchased were there after server restart. I deleted the character again and created a new one( a mistake I know). After logging out one of the two characters I had las night was there, but the stuff in item claim and bits are now gone again.
This game is fun but is really beginning to frustrate me with whatever this is that’s happening.
Update: all my characters are back now.

It's working fine for me right now. I waited until now to try to sign in: my characters are there and I logged in fine.

Is the PS4 servers working? Not working, My character is fine just keeps saying timed out, I was in the game just fine I seen it say downtime in 60 minutes, waited a half hour in game then logged out, never tried to go back, because I always look for patch notes I mean something on here. But then I seen that Character problem which I never had because I wasn't trying to get on the game.
