thankfully this game is third person so argueing about first person is pointless.
learn to play third person shooters. then u can truely say you are a "shooter" pro
I take TPS over FPS any day. I still like FPS but I get bored with it every quickly unless I have my friends playing with me. CoD and Halo 4 became old fast (Spartan Ops extended my Halo 4 gameplay but was a huge let down IMO). I like being able to see my character, do a roll, visibly take cover, etc. Oh well. Now if only this game had flying, I wouldnt buy another game (huge flight sim and Ace Combat fan)
I am Cornholio! Haha
I play both TPS and FPS and like them both. This game was made TPS so that is what I am going to play and not think any more on it. The reason it works here is because of the customization of your character. All the different outfits and what not will not go to waste in a FPS view.
in APS you can be running on your undies and you will be the only one that would not notice it.
Since playing the Gears of Wars series and Mass Effect 2 and 3 I've all but abandoned FPSs. They seem old and clunky to me now.
Gears of war I hated the game mechanics for some reason... Mass effect however I thought was very well done. Still can't compare to the mechanics of COD... with the big exception of the really dumb "prone is blocked"... gah.
The weird thing though is that Defiances game play seems more FPS playstyle than TPS...
I suppose you play on console? If so then that's because the field of view on a console is very low for some reason. I think most console games set there's at 45-60 degrees where as on PC most play it at 80-120 degrees and it makes a HUGE difference. I prefer mine at about 90.
Question: does your character stay on the left side of the screen, or can you move character to right, and will the game auto do it for you in cover?
i'm asking in the FAQ thread
I too mainly prefer 3rd person views to 1st person. I absolutely HATE most 1st person games with only a few exceptions. I love Portal 2 and I enjoyed Far Cry 3. But I hate COD. I hate Halo.
1st person views are too limited. No peripheral vision and even to look from left to right requires a complete range of motion whereas in real life you just move your head left or right and can quickly assess your surroundings. In a FPS you gotta move your whole body just to see to the left or or to the right.
More immersion in a FPS? Whatever. While a FPS might feel a bit like you are the character you're portraying in the game rather than simply controlling a character, a TPS feels like you're controlling the star of an action movie and can be just as immersive if not more so since in a TPS you can interact more with the game's environment. In fact I don't really even like calling 3rd person games "shooters" because they are often much more than that. You often have a lot of other objectives like accessing computer terminals, lock-picking, etc. FPS games are all about shooting.
Also TPS games tend to have kick-*** melee combat like Splinter Cell Conviction and upcoming Splinter Cell Blacklist. An even better example would be Assassin's Creed which is almost entirely melee combat. All of these have excellent melee mechanics and animations. While melee combat in nearly every single FPS is a boring 1 or 2 animations where you thrust your arm with a knife or something *snores*. The best melee combat I have ever seen in a FPS is in Far Cry 3. The knife, gun, and grenade takedowns in that game are epic. I found myself doing more melee combat in that game than shooting. Sneaking up on NPCs and knifing them them unaware was immensely satisfying. But in most FPS games melee combat is rarely satisfying or even very effective.
So it's rare for me to buy a FPS game. It took a buddy on Xbox Live a YEAR to convince me to give Portal 2 a try. So I put it in my Gamefly queue and when I eventually got it I loved it. I own my own copy of it now which was actually a gift from my ex-girlfriend for Christmas in 2011. Far Cry 3 impressed me in trailers and gameplay videos so I pre-ordered it and don't regret doing so. But these are a FEW exceptions for 1st person games. Mostly I avoid them like a politician avoids the truth.
Try Borderlands 2, m8. Amazing FPS, best ive seen so far!
Anyways, for my own gameplay i like to be able to switch between FPS and TPS. Looking at the gameplay vids of Defiance so far, i think TPS does the game most right. Lots of players around, lots of enemies, lots of grenades flying around and its a fact that TPS gives you a better overview on your surroundings, which allows you to react in a better way on circumstances that appear. Not to mention the easier ways to cover yourself behind walls and other obstacles to take a small break from the heat.
Then again, as a sniper-fanatic FPS is the best way to go. And what saw my eye? If you keep your distance, equip your sniperrifle and lock on to an enemy the game changes to FPS with you looking straight through the scope on your sniperrifle! Man... This game is made for me!
I'm not a fan of "god vision" in general. You can pan the camera behind you (eyes in the back of your head) and also effectively see around corners. Your peripheral vision is also enhanced.
Certain FPS games where you can die almost instantly tend to greatly favor a campy strat. Now take that one step further with TPS games where some combine low health WITH the ability to see around corners. You just sit, line up your reticule... and the first one to run down the hall, dies.
Also - if a game attempts to incorporate a stealth aspect in multiplayer it's pretty self defeating when you can see everything. Try to flank them? They were looking 180 degrees behind them even though their toon is looking the other way. If you get close enough to melee from the back? They saw you approaching behind them with their peripheral vision. (Some games keep the camera tighter to the PC than others) This is all assuming the game doesn't even have a radar on top of it that waters everything down to follow the red dot. (Which is the biggest reason I'm not a fan of modern FPS/TPS games)
Defiance doesn't seem to suffer from any of the above, though. Nothing mentioned will stop me from getting this since the game looks to be a blast. In has a radar, but I'm pretty sure you only show up while shooting which I don't mind as much. The battles should be hectic enough population wise and there is plenty of open space where camping shouldn't even be much of a factor. Throw in the EGO abilities and weapon variety and I have no problem with this being a TPS.
