Why all the bad reviews?

Some of the hate for the game is completely unjustified. I've read reviews and seen video reviews where it's clear to me that the reviewer either hasn't actually played OR played in early beta.

I think some people are confused that Defiance is different from what they expect. This isn't Call of Duty Online like shooter fans want/expect. This isn't a traditional mmo that used the ol' RNG to hit, you have to actually aim and shoot yourself. This probably annoys players of regular mmos.

The gameplay is quite fun and the story (if you do the side missions) is interesting and will probably be futher expanded in the tv show. This is another aspect that some people just don't get. The game & show are going to synergize off each other. I would expect that I'd have to watch the show to get some story details that I can't get in game and vice versa. This too, probably annoys the impatient gamers out there.

Overall my 1st impressions of the game are mostly positive. My only complaint is the terrible chat system (or lack thereof). This game was obviously made with voice chat in mind as the primary way to communicate, something that PC gamers don't use as much as text chatting.

Seeking a review is nothing more than asking the opinion of a person in a somewhat professional and PUBLIC degree. Honestly, I trust the reviews of my friends over that of anything "official." I'll take a moment to pick on Metacritic.

I imagine that some aren't going to like this much, but when you break a game like Mass Effect 3 down, and really look at it: the combat grows stale and never really changes. The story was very "Meh" in comparison to its earlier counterparts. The new characters were boring. I ran through the multiple endings on principle more than enjoyment and found so much left to be desired that I traded the game in before I could be tea-bagged into paying for the DLC. Its Meta-score is ******edly and inconceivably high- IN MY OPINION.

There is no such thing as a definitive review unless you do the review by yourself, for yourself. It is unfortunate that a medium score on Metacritic- which is nothing more than an average of strangers opinions for a game- may be the determining factor in whether or not some people buy it. But reviewers are what they are, which is nothing more than a person who made their opinion public.

Eh, I'm not bothered by reviews. Actually never have been. This game is an MMO, some might say it isn't but the code, how it's built is MMO. There are more limitations and challenges to overcome then lets say a single player game like skyrim or fallout.

Look at ANY MMO game out there and can you say that most of them launch perfectly? Very few do so. Very, very few. Anarchy Online has been functioning for what, 10 years and at launch it was unplayable. Arguments for content are also moot. Given the choice between running into a rescue event or collecting up 20 fetch quests at a town, I'll take the former. Most missions in MMOs that are not story, are just dead weight, busywork. And MMO's get constantly improved with more missions.

So I honestly don't pay much heed to the reviews. You can't review an MMO like any other game because an MMO is never finished. I don't mean launched early or anything. But that work on an MMO never ends, things get added, things get fixed (or broken, then fixed). The few reviews I've seen handle the game as if it was a boxed game with no further development.

Or I might be understanding the reviews wrong. It's not perfect and I'd love an ingame encyclopedia of sorts to get me up to snuff with the lore, since the game is supposed to be able to stand alone without the show.

What I cannot understand is how somebody who claims to have high standards (1) insists on posting and debating on a forum for a casual game targeting 10-15 year olds (2). I double checked and this is the second time in this thread you dismiss people who disagree with you as 'fanboys' (3). This leads me to conclude that you too are having trouble coming to terms with the fact that different people have different opinions. Just because you think something is true does not make it a fact. Ugh, 'fanboy'. Sure I suppose it applies to a select group of folks who often defend something with blind, zealous fervor - but it certainly doesnt apply to the folks who just enjoy something because they do. Throwing it around at anyone who says something nice about the game is just silly. No what i have a problem coming to terms with, is that people flat out insist this game is flawless and are honestly amazed it gets bad reviews. If you cannot accept this game to have flaws, you are indeed a fanboy.
I try to like this game, im on the forums to have discussions mostly about the good and bad about the game in hopes that Trion will take in the feedback. I do not like to stand by and let threads roll in about how amazing or how bad the game is with no real logic behind it. Its either "OMG BEST GAME EVER NO GAME COMPARES" or "GAME SUCKS HOW TO GET REFUND" There needs to be discussion, opinions, and facts thrown out on why people feel this way.
A review is an opinion, some people (despite what others say) live or die by them and rely on sites like meta critic. When everyone is averaging out on the same thing - go ahead and be the small minority that goes against what they say because of the way YOU feel. You are still the minority and numbers speak louder.

I put a lot of stock in reviews to be honest and if I had waited, like I planned on doing, for reviews to start rolling in I probably would've not bought this game. And to be even more honest I probably wouldn't care either. But I did buy Defiance and I'm having a lot of fun playing this game. But to ignore all this games myriad faults, like so many people who say this is the greatest game ever, is just mind boggling. Even though I like this game and I plan on playing it on a regular basis for as long as the servers are up I'm also clearly aware that if this game wasn't an mmo I'd be pretty unimpressed by it. And yes, I've played many, many mmo's and am aware of launch day bugs, but I'm also someone who works in the IT field and I know that if any company other than a game company released an information system that has as many flaws as most mmo's have on launch they'd probably get sued or would at least have a hard time finding projects. And because of this I don't cut companies slack for launch day mishaps. Gamers may be vocal critics but they're also a lot more forgiving than people give them credit for.

Okay, that's hardly unreasonable and you are right. I should probably apologize for insinuating that you were a moron. This said, the post I am replying to speaks better in your favour than all of your previous ones in this thread combined. Why not start out with this, rather than calling everyone who disagrees with you a fanboy?

I should clarify that I really like Defiance but I also do agree with a lot of the negative reviews. Unfortunately, as you just said yourself, a lot of people go by reviews when they decide to pick up a game. I do not see this ending well for Trion and I fear the chilly reception already blemished their reputation.

Don't mind him.. he just loves to pull stuff out of his behind. The patch on 15th is just bug fixes.

I dunno why we are even wasting time on arguing if the game got the reviews it deserved or not. If you like the game and feel like it was worth the money then to you it was a good game. If you don't like the game and it feels like an waste of time then it wasn't. Simply put all the reviews in the world will not over power personal feelings. Plenty of games have had high ratings and ive hated them and plenty low but I have loved them.

Ill admit i play the devils advocate on here a lot. For every one thing someone says that Defiance does right, i will point out 5 things wrong. Its not to put down the game, its to bring up other parts of the game people over look. Defiance overall can be impressive (for some console players with no MMO experiance, its REALLY impressing them..), but to let things go un-noticed or pretend things are ok just gives Trion the green light to never listen to the fan base - who is expected to keep the game alive.
People, its OK to say "i like the game, it has a lot of flaws though and this is what they are" - and PLEASE say what you WOULD like changed with the game because as of now - it has no longevity. Reviews bad now? Yep and for a reason. Does that mean we have to roll over and settle with the game as it is? Nope. - and that is why im hard on this game. I want more depth, i want harder difficulty, I want things changed. This doesnt happen by people going "damn the reviews this game is GREAATT" I bet every Defiance player can find at least 1 thing they would like to see implemented.

I think it's impossible to review an MMO for one reason. MMOs change over time and get better or get worse. Content is added, bugs are fixed, glitches are removed. Player community can be huge at first, and then dwindle to near empty servers or vice versa.

Don't pay attention to review sites. Rent the game/borrow from a friend and then base your judgement.

A game reviewer takes a lot into consideration. I dont always agree with them, but i take into consideration the factors they are basing their opinion off and compare them to my own.
#1 complaint for most - This game does not scratch an itch for shooting, and it does not scratch an itch an MMOrpg.
Some people just settle for mediocre and good for them. I have higher standards and the only reason im on these forums is to see if Trion will actually turn this game around (because its only their second game and they did make a decent MMOrpg their first try) we can all be hopeful, but im not buying into the fanboy hype.

Did you read all of the other stuff they posted stating that once the show airs regular updates would be made to include content. They also quite clearly stated that every two months you would see DLC with half paid half free stuff in it. In fact they specifically said the content for the game like missions and things would be free. Seriously if you don't like the game trade it in and get another one. You're not constructive, you're whining. If you came on and said I like X Y and Z but suggest A B and C get changed/added or is not working properly that would be another story. However all this thread is full of is this game sucks I quit you should quit too and I hate the game so much I am going to live on its forums..............

A lot of the reviews have been positive to mixed in the reviews I've put in the compilation thread.

There are a lot of mixed because of launch issues and needed patches. I think the real story will be told in the months to come. Things will be fixed, or they won't. People will get bored, or they won't. Not sure how much the reviews will matter versus word of mouth. But I think the vast majority of reviewers of the reviews I've read find a lot to like about the game despite it's imperfections.

I've put a decent amount of time into this game. Ive also played many other genres. I agree, reviewers should also mention things such as replay value, game time and innovation.


As this is not my first mmo, I know that game time should be damn near infinite. I am fully aware that this portion we are all playing is basically a prologue till the show comes out. Players shouldn't be saying that they have completed the game but rather they have completed the available missions.


Replay valueIts easy to judge replay value in that I don't see the need to make a second character. What can I do with the second that I can't do with the first. Maybe some day In the future there will be stats and abilities that vary and make significant depending on what race or class or w/e but for me at this point in the game, if you've gone through everything once why go again?


Innovation So far I haven't seen anything innovative. Some mildly interesting powers, shoot stuff, level up, few co-op maps, even fewer pvp maps. If you mean innovative for the xbox then yes, this game is a big deal. Hey look at that first mmo on the 360. But being the first doesn't make something good or fun. Might make people curious but in the end its gameplay. Did you have fun? Would you recommend this game to a friend?


Everyone is entitled to their opinions about the game for what ever reason led them to that opinion. For me, the game is a little bland.


As you get further south enemies look more diverse and interesting. There seems to be no background music as your exploring the maps. Maybe theres a setting I didn't turn on to hear it, someone let me know if there is. Arkfalls seem to be a competition as to who can do the most damage, probably why I see so many cars driving around at the major ones. Almost no strategy seems required for any encounter be it arkfall, mission or co-op map. PVP matches seem to be over 2 minutes after I get in. You could factor pursuits into game time for the portion of the game that's out, but if you don't care for the reward why bother? Like the game, a good deal of the costume rewards seem bland or ugly. A couple of nice ones among them but only a couple.



I see there are issues with not being able to chat with other players. Hasn't been a problem for me, a few of my xbl friends also got the game out of curiosity. Could be our constantly playing together that makes the game appear more fun than it really is for us.


First few days sucked but the connection seems stable now. Not sure what the dlc will bring to the game, but until it comes out, for me the game is just meh.

Is it me, or did the Angry Joe review thread vanish? I get an error when trying to access it.

Not exactly what I would call a basis for a review there, but if you want my take on it just as a quick example of what I think here goes (and this is just a summary of my thoughts on Defiance from launch on the PC).

Performance - I was lucky enough not to have the patcher issue that many experienced at launch and this is something that is likely to impact a portion of the review score. You can't grade on what will be but what is. This was a huge problem for many players and it had a pretty negative impression right out of the gate.

Once you get into the game, performance was pretty smooth on the PC though I hear it wasn't quite so good on the Xbox. So again, performance and downtimes are all key portions of a review even at launch.

Inventory & UI (PC Perspective) - In this case I will say that from an MMO and PC perspective the inventory and UI is a bit of a mess. Just trying to sort through my items is a pain and breaking down every junk item extremely slowly takes way too long. This could be simplified in one way by removing the "Start Process" step and just click breakdown and confirm or a bulk breakdown option.

Even for veteran players like myself navigating the UI is more complicated than it needs to be and wreaks of a straight console port without much of a thought on how to make it better for PC users.

The chat system was and currently still is a disaster. Hardly anyone uses the text due to its poor implementation and rapid disappearance, the voice has gotten better but still is temperamental and lacking a basic push-to-talk feature making me want to stab myself in the ear with a pencil when someone joins my group and keeps huffing in the microphone.

While the chat system will get some (and I use this loosely) improvements next week with text staying on for more than a couple of seconds now, it still lacks some basic needed PC features that help establish communities and serve as a chat medium while not grouped.

Speaking of grouped, there really isn't a huge deal of things to do as a group outside of a few co-op maps, ark falls when they happen, and PvP. Much of the game is based around fighting alone with the side missions being an obvious problem for many groups since there is currently no way to share missions or see missions that your groupmates are working on. The fact that many times I have been tossed into a different phase as someone I was grouped with is a staggering oversight and extremely frustrating.

That's just a few things that I consider needs improving that are not the "normal pew pew" or "grind grind". But they are things that need work to help establish a lasting community for this game and likely some other things observed in some reviews.

Don't get me wrong, it can be a decent TPS but its MMO side could use some polish and I'm sure it will get it over time.

I have noticed a few things and assumptions based on false concepts. First name a class. Your initial selection is not a class selection, it is a background selection which is mostly cosmetic in nature. Defiance doesn't actually have a class selection because it is not a traditional RPG. You have a background choice and then a Primary power choice. Neither of these are a class. Also I have notice Anim you are especially negative towards people who have positive things to say about this game. If you dislike it so much go play something you enjoy.

This game generally has had fewer bugs on start up than any other MMO I have played from Beta before.

SWTOR, Champions, Star Trek, the Secret World, DCU, WAR, WOW:twotlk, WOW:Cat, WOW:MOP, Diablo 3, Auto Assault, Rifts, and several others.

I can say that this game is OK, and fun it does not suck or fail to deliver what it promises to be, sadly it is not Amazing at the moment but then we haven't seen an episode of the TV show, so it is had to tell how that will change the feeling of the game. Personally after last years disappointment with ME3 I find this game to be a refreshing take on the 3rd person shooter RPG. Also after reading the reviews the biggest negative is the game doesn't bring anything new to the genre which is funny since only a small handful of games fall in the third person shooter RPG genre, and even fewer are MMOs (Tabula Rasa), if you compare other third person shooter RPGs Sure Mass Effect is the best, Defiance is not far behind, Although the list is rather small. So stop trying to compare this game to MMORPGs because it is not, also don't compare this game to First Person shooters because it is also not one of those.

Oh yeah, definitely. I can name dozens of things I dislike about Defiance. This said, it's refreshing to see a gameplay-driven MMO for once: I mean, the majority of MMOs that claim to have action combat do not distance themselves from the Everquest or World of Warcraft formula enough. I feel a few reviews miss the point of the game and attempt to review it as an MMORPG (given that Defiance is classless game with horizontal scaling, the comparison does not work). This said, one of the most fair reviews of Defiance that I've seen was actually that Angry Joe video. He did give the game a 5/10 but he also highlighted everything the game did right. By contrast, I fail to understand the criticism raised by a couple of reviewers that the combat is less impactful than Borderlands. I love Borderlands 2, I have about 75 hors logged in that game, but I do not believe that Defiance has inferior shooting (especially when compared to Borderlands 1).

Anyway, we can discuss reviews all day but the point I wanted to make is this. When it comes to reviews, there are clear double-standards. A lot of middling, utterly forgettable triple A releases often get a 'free' passing 70%. The average review score for IGN is 69% and the average score for Game Informer is 73%. I find it unfair that a lot of frankly **** games can get away with more problems than Defiance has. Hell, the reviews fro BRINK are a little more positive than those for Defiance and BRINK was virtually unplayable on a lot of AMD-powered GPUs at release. To summarize, I played a lot of worse games that earned far superior review scores.

How can someone name the difference between classes in a game that wasn't designed to have classes? There is nothing about classes in game, in the website information, and in interviews and blogs.

Didn't read all the way through but, bad reviews, because it's an MMO, which is always an unfinished product, it's a living evolving product that requires updates, patches, content updates, etc etc...

It's not your typical MMO, so people try to compare with WoW or BL1 and 2 or CoD and that just doesn't work here.

Reporting needs to be objective, not based on past experiences with other games that aren't even in the same genre.

Every review I've seen has said it is strangely addictive with plenty of room for improvement and it is in the hands of a capable company that will take advantage of that room.

As far as I'm concerned this is a good thing. Also a lot of the worst reviews actually mistook functions they didn't understand for bugs/other functions or critiqued its MMO features as if it were a TPS or its TPS features as if it was an MMO effectively proving the reviewer to be a total ******.

That said the game legitimately needs an improved tutorial to clear up the first half of the above issues.

I think u are onto something there!! But the funny thing is that people are always saying that shooters and or MMOs are all the same we need something different, then when a company gives that to them well then the hate starts lol cant make everyone happy!!

Well reasons I can find is: Lack fo varierty in mission types, almost every single mission is the exact same click 2-5 glowies, no matter where you get it, this gets old really fast. Go in shoot a few guys, click the glowies done, and the rewards suck. Arkfalls while a neat concept are quite frankly boring, and the rewards for the time spent are total crap. 500 exp? maybe 750 exp for something that takes 20+ minutes at times? I think everyone should get the same rewards no matter where you are on the leaderboards, because I think thats where the issue is.

The game is also a piss-poor console port on the pc, the game does not have a res higher than 720p, you can set it to 1080p or higher, but what it does is renders it at 720p then upscales it, which resultes in blurry textures, and other anomalies. Then you have the fact that the UI, and such was not changed at all for pc so its just a royal pain in the *** to use, and its glitchy as hell as well, the graphics options have virutally no settings whatsoever you can fine tune.

Then we have the weapon system: Over half the weapons in the game are total garbage and not worth using, when you max the exp bar on a gun your forced to change guns if you want to continue to raise your skill with that gun. The bonuses for raising these skills are also so minor that they might as well remove it from the game, I mean -1% reload time is not going to make any sort of noticable diffrence, now if it was -10% reload time for that weapon type that is diffrent. Yes there are 20 levels, but most levels give such a low bonus its like: Why bother having them in the first place?

The worse thing wrong with the game, is the devs keep destroying weapons due to the small pack of pvp players, Since tried lacked a brain in this respect and didn't have seperate base stats for weapons basedon whether your in pve or pvp, when the weapon is nerfed for pvp, it gets destroyed to the point of worthlessness in pve: weapons that got nailed by this so far: Rocket launchers and grenade launcher, most of these are just not worth using at all, due to low damage per shot compared to their reload/mag sizes. Only decent ones are ones like the Mass Cannon, and the grenade launcher that u can manually split the sticky grenade into 3 other nades with a button press, however these are being nerfed to probally complete garbage due to pvp whiners that don't know how to roll out of the way of stuff. Infectors are another example, they already are pretty crap-tier for pver due to next to no damage, and now they are getting nerfed even MORE due to a few people in pvp? I mean what kind of idiots do they have decidng these changes? why can't they just have diff base stats on weapons for pve and pvp, this way one change to one side does not screw over the other? Its common sense, hell in Trions other game Rift they even did this, certan skills have a diffrent version in pvp because it'd be too strong otherwise.

Currently only weapons that are really decent in Defiance (IMO) are: ARs, Smgs, LMGs, and some shotguns, Pistols are good too if you can get close, Snipers rock especally the alien ones if your good at hitting weak points, otherwise AR/LMG is better. The rest of the guns especally after that 1.0.1.0 update are pretty much not worth using.

yea it may not be the best game in the world but you do have to remember some things here.
its a shooter more than an MMO. meaning all the MMo p[layers will be somewhat disappointed and the shooter fans will have the same problem with the mmo side of things.
and the game has jsut launched and with all MMO games alot of bugs will be in the game. thats why there is a report bug fuction in game to help with that.
im not the biggest fan of doing the same thing over and over again as are alot of the other shooter fans out ther. it does get a little boring but thats why they added races and stuff to the game.

there is a big patch coming soon so wait for your reviews to be handed out after that goes live if your going to complain about bugs in the game.

It's neither a decent MMO nor a good shooter. It's a rushed and very unpolished tie in game for a TV series that isn't even out yet and hardly has a fan base. It's nice to see real time combat in an MMO but the combat mechanics are very simplistic, repetitive and quite dull. Meanwhile, the MMO aspect lacks any sort of meaningful social interaction, META structure or depth. In other words; good concept, poor execution.

What if the show ends up being cancelled? Judging from the writing and voice acting performances from the game, i wouldn't be surprised if it did. What happens to the game then?

Well, why should SWTOR have gotten 90%+ review ratings at launch? Look at where that game ended up in less than 6 months. Look at what happened to it 11 months after launch.

So, either the review sites are (a) rating a game based on advertisement money received from the studio (i.e. Advertorials) or (b) these review sites really just review based upon which way the wind is blowing. Look at how many came back to review SWTOR a second time 8-10 months later and bashed the heck out of it. Apparently, the wind blowing through their ears changed direction.

They are all junk, regardless of the game they want to review.

I'm enjoying the game and having a blast. When that stops, I'll put it aside for a bit and come back to it after a spell. No "game reviewer" is going to change that. Nor did they stop me from buying it this past Wednesday.

7 is Generious for bioshock Infinite, I'd rate it a 6, due to 0 replayability, and the fact that other than the art style, Infinite was a major step backwards gameplay wise compared to the first 2, especally from part 2. It just didn't feel like bioshock to me, it felt like some half-assed generic fps, like call of duty and garbage like that, that just had Bioshock slapped on it for sales. Admit it, if it didn't say Bioshock on it, I doubt it wouldn't have done nearly as well as it did.

Honestly I feel any big game site like gamespot, ign and the like base their reviews alot on how much scratch (aka bonus money) they/the company gets from the devoloper. I'd rather actually listen to people who have played the game in its entirety to get a better idea. Been alot of games where the offical reviews have been 5-6 from big sites, but players rate it a 7 or 8, and I get the game and end up loving it. I don't even see how games like call of duty get over 6/10 in ratings, its the exact same game thats even more repetive than defiance being reguratated every single year, with very little if anything thats actually new/diffrent. Yet it always scores high, Has to be money changing hands.

One of my biggest gripes with Defiance is Trions brainlessness in terms of nerfing stuff for pvp without remotely considering how it'd effect the much bigger pve side, and their reluctance to make weapons have diffrent base stats for pve and pvp modes, which would fix the initial problem.

Also the lack of work done on the port to pc, the UI is quite frankly horrible, because you can tell it was designed for a console/controller and nto for a mouse/kb, would it have killed them to have redone the ui a bit for the pc version so its faster to use? Tehn u got the fact the game has no internal res higher than 720p, it renders the game at 720p then upscales it to high res, which really makes the game look terrible.

Lastly, the content or lack there of unique content: I am ego level 320+ now, and pretty much 98% of the missions are all the exact same "click 2-5 glowies then mission done" stuff, with 0 variation in this. Arkfalls also have really bad rewards for the time they take, to the point I usually do nto bother with them because they are a waste of time, I could do one of the random roadblocks on the road that takes 2-3 mins and get a better reward than I would an arkfall that takes 20-30 mins. Not sure if where you place on the score board effects your exp etc, if it does they need to remove that so everyone gets the same amount.

It was even the same thing with WIZARD magazine back in the day. I worked in comic books. Their reviews were 100% based on how much advertisement money they were paid by the publisher. Period.

I can name multiple sources that do the same thing across different areas of the entertainment industry. It is not as uncommon as one would think.
