Howdy! I've been gaming for some time now and have seen some amazing titles as well as some amazing flops, and over the years, patterns have become more and more obvious when dealing with what makes up a good game compared to..well, the not so good. However, I'm not going to poke at the content, I'm sure there are already a million threads about it, no- rather I'm going to rant about the mindset behind the game because to be honest, this game looks pretty good from what we have seen and if it really is as amazing as it looks, then it begins to fall onto the ambition of the team to keep us interested and happy with the product. So! Without further ado, let the hastily written novel begin!
So, first off! Don't get greedy. (Also- Don't Panic, but that is covered by a more reputable source.) You make a good game and we will happily throw our money at you. Build a money grab like what so many MMO's(/fps) are becoming, and well- we know when we are getting ripped off. Sure you might stay afloat with the folks intrigued by the new game, but in order to keep them playing, the focus needs to be put on 'how can we make this game better' instead of 'how can we make more from this'.
Speaking of money grabs, please don't turn this into just anoher pay-2-win type of game. I mean- of course there will be the pre-order bonuses, etc etc, but once the game has players leaning on 'OP' items they got from a marketplace/itemstore/armas, it wont be long until you start losing folks simply due to frustration (APB is a good example). If a marketplace is implemented, let it be filled with more cosmetic sort of things! Things that don't give you an advantage over everyone else... (I'm looking at -you- typewriter.)
Next...LISTEN TO THE COMMUNITY! After playing Bioware's ToRtanic and facing probably the worst customer support and dev carelessness in my life, I can't express this enough. We want to hear from the team and know what is going on and we hope that you will in turn listen to us and our suggestions. Just take hints from Bioware...and by that I mean avoid doing anything they did in the realm of customer support and...well, interaction in general. That includes: Disregarding the players with a 'I'm the dev, I know what you want' mindset and going headlong into things nobody actually wants, remaining silent in regards to bugs/exploits/balance (we actually do like to know if these things are being dealt with) and please actually deal with said bugs/exploits/balance! No cover ups and work-arounds to an issue. (Again, ToRtanic.) Admit and fix, we won't hate you. :)
On the other hand, don't just change everything to make the loud happy. MMO is forum QQ territory. :P
And lastly (though I normally don't suggest this because it's often the opposite issue of what companies have), advertise some more! I mean it! I only just heard of this game and of the people I know, only one other had heard of the title as well! Throw some banners in Youtube, some commercials on tv, get us interested. It is only a month until the scheduled release and the steam pre-orders are at 10% of the 'expected' number...10% as of 3/9/2013. I hope this changes as we near the 2nd, but so far, this game seems pretty well hidden for those not scouring for a new game.
This game looks like it has some promise and it would be a shame for it to become just another 2012-2013 MMO statistic. Please do this right.
...Now if only the devs actually read these things... <<
